Fun Facts non-natives may not know: The term "Navajo" isn't actually a term that comes from their people, nor is it even a word in their language. It's a word that comes from, I believe Spanish colonists. The Navajo Nation's word for their own people, in their language, is "Diné". I'm Lakota and we have a similar situation with the term "Sioux". The word "Sioux" basically comes from a bad French adoption of the Ojibwe word for the word "Snake". It was used by people outside of us Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples) to refer to us. We've adopted the word... to some capacity? But it isn't a word in our language, and we usually only refer to ourselves that way for certain formal and tribal governmental dealings. I personally never use the word "Sioux" and it makes me laugh when I see it used cause I find it so corny. Also, yeah. Talking about sk*nwalkers is definitely some kind of no no to Diné folk. I'm not too informed, but you may or may not get the side eye from Dine for talking about it. Same thing with W*ndigos and Ojibwe/Aanishinaabe folk.
I was just wondering why the 'j' in Navajo is silent and this explains it all. And years ago when I was watching playthroughs of the Beyond: Two Souls video game, the word Diné came up and I got confused. Thank you for this, it was really helpful and educational.
As a Native American, I do appreciate the disclaimer about how this IS something spiritual and important to the Navajo's beliefs. Sometimes people really do treat Native American beliefs as nothing more than "Wow! Cool weird thing! Look at how weird this is!" My mother actually hardcore believes in a lot our tribes beliefs. She had a nightmare once about us being haunted, so she had me and my brother's put up a leaf above my apartment's door, as its supposed to prevent evil spirits from entering the building.
Re: the news report with the alleged skinwalker on the side of the road, this is a shot from the alien body horror movie XTRO from the 80s. It's a pretty wild movie and that scene is right near the start, very creepy and memorable and also not a skinwalker I'm afraid.
I believe Red Letter Media covered that one, and it was one of the weirdest movies they ever talked about to the point it almost made me want to check it out. A completely overwritten mess of a story from what I recall. But I might also be mixing it up in my head with the film about the aborted fetus that gets mutated by radioactive waste.
@@Joe90h RLM definitely covered Xtro. I remember spotting the monster from it in like 2 other videos about skin walkers and being shocked that nobody else in the comments recognized it from them.
There’s a picture I’ve seen on one or two thumbnails of a “skinwalker” looking cryptid in the snow peeking out from behind a tree with a tail , the picture makes me feel weak with fear , does anyone’s know the origin of it ?
Super interesting episode! I was thinking "Yeah it's odd I don't know more about this." as I was watching, until it was mentioned that talking about this sort of thing is a cultural tabu. Digging these comments from natives as well. Thanks for sharing your stories
Spooky story passed down to me: In the mountains of Kentucky, my mother was a child living with her adoptive parents. She remembers them using a telescope to watch something in the distance on a mountain, walk back and forth in front of what appeared to be a cave. One day they carried her and ran into the house and hid under the table after a bit of a panic. She told me, they said they were being attacked and that this flying person thing was swooping down at them.
Also, later while living in Ohio they experienced paranormal activity in their home. Mainly my mom. She tells me I had the same spirit passed onto me when I was born. It’s a Native American connection imo
That book has 33 pages?! 33 is one of those sacred numbers that shows up all the time on things like this. The freemasons love it. HECK Disney club 33 Look out for 33
So that super spooky noise, that roaring 'howl'? Turns out some deer and elk and all can make a very similar noise. Scared the literal shit out of me the first time I ever heard it, so I forgive ppl for being spooked. But ya, my $ is on a stag.
So stoked for this episode. Skinwalkers are my favorite cryptid and I love looking into the topic. It's wild. Also on the subject of the number 4, ya'll should definitely look into its significance in Asian cultures. Like in Japanese culture, hospitals don't have a fourth room since they associate the number with 'death'. Other cultures think it's an unlucky number.
Yea,I always heard to become a Skinwalker..they'd have to do a ritual where they'd have to murder one that they loved the most/that loved them the most. They'd have to harvest this loved one's bits..like cannibalize certain parts, grind the bones into this powder for magical potions, just beyond disturbing and dark things!!!
My first introduction to the concept of Skinwalkers is as a Child, I saw the episode of Goosebumps called ‘Werewolf Skin’. Scared the shut out of me and is still one of the best and creepiest episodes of the show considering a lot of it doesn’t hold up well.
NIDS has still never released their findings,in totality..😏 but I remember a couple of the scientists that were there, said that they'd NEVER EVER again in their whole lives,EVER step foot on the Skinwalker Ranch 🤨 so what did these fellas experience,to give them such an intense aversion to this land?? Lol
Hey Guys! Just discovered your podcast today! You may also like doing some research on "Dog Valley" in Millard County Utah. All the locals, including the native tribes here, all have some super crazy stories of that area involving Skinwalkers and other strange unexplainable phenomena! Would love to share those stories with you if you are ever interested! I run a paranormal investigations team called Central.Utah.Paranormal we have been collecting similiar stories and research for a few years now.
This isn't a dig at you guys at all, loving the pod honestly, but every time you guys mentioned something we "don't learn in school" I absolutely learned all of that. Maybe it's because I grew up in California, but I'm only a little bit younger than Derrick and things like the trail of tears, general mistreatment of Native Americans, or anything else that paints the US in a bad light was all 100% part of the required curriculum in my public school and the schools of just about everyone I know. Idk how it is in other states or in private schools but I thought you might find it interesting to know that changed a while back in a lot of places.
@@MegaStrange I hope it's nice to know that at least in some parts of America a lot of things like that are thankfully being added to the curriculum! This episode was great, I love all the cryptid/folklore ones you guys do, keep it up!
I only learned about these kinds of thing the one time i went to summer school. One the first day the teacher hadn't been given any info as to what class he was to teach us other than "Social Studies". This was because we all came from different schools and had each failed different classes. The teacher being a total g was like "Oh, well whjo wants to learn about terrible things the US has done to its citizens and other groups of people?" He taught us bout The Trail Of Tears, US Invasion of the Philippines, Hary Milk, Malcom X, What lead up to the 92 Compton rights, all this great stuff. It was the best thing that happened to me haha. Our final project was to highlight an artwork that covered topics we covered. I picked Fear Campaign by Fear Factory, one kid talked about TuPac, and another person brought up Banksy (spelling?).
I think the discovery show had the crew looked into UFOs and skin walker's connection they we're permitted to flim at some point, and only certain areas as well.

"Angels and Aliens" great Tom Hanks movie
That is so an elephant's I can even see its trunk and you can see the elephant ears as it walks away
Haven't listened yet but glad to see you are finally covering this topic!
im lovin this channel. and im exited for this ep cause i always wanted to know what a skinwalker really is
ordered food for the return event of the century
Hell yeah, we back boys
that is insane that the local news would report an image so easily from a movie and not real
the reason why you dont talk about or hear people talk about skinwalker is because talking about it is like calling it to you.
As soon as I heard the thing of wearing antlers on the head I immediately thought of Malaki Black's entrance mask. So glad it was included.

I heard that at first they were given this ability to be able to hunt and then it turned into using the power for evil
It's like a Saturday Morning Cartoon vibe. I love it!
