That small c.u. for the immersion was for something called heat wise I think an off-peak supply was used to power the immersion during E7 hours and you used to push the push to make switch which used to give you a timed (1hr?) peak supply to the immersion (boost)
You would be correct, It was a pre-smart meter tariff of the 90's that provided an additional amount of boost power later during the day for the evening meal prep and bath. It would have likely been wired in to the top immersion only.

Great video as always Dave 👍 You think the manufacturers of those heaters would have considered that a lot of old heaters don’t have a 24 hour supply switch aswell and could have perhaps incorporated a battery powered control Unit that charges up on the off peak, to save installers having to run in an additional supply ! Yeah, I had a lot of to and fro with the lady who bought the place on the best way forward as she didn't want to splurge on the expense of that new lump on the wall, but it's hard to know what would work best for the tenant eventually. Perhaps a filled rad would have done the job, but with two other storage units on site, they might have wanted to run the whole flat off-peak.
Thanks for demonstrating the low profile LED batten lights with the multi-colour temp function: the missus poked her 'ed in at that point and now wants one, so that's another £70 out my wallet and down the pan. Coffee sequence as crazy as ever. I'd guess the kitchen fitter wouldn't be too happy with you resting the end of the drill with wood boring bit on his nice, new kitchen surface at around 12 minutes would he?
At 40:00 you talk about a business that used to buy old storage heaters. there we loads of little businesses round where i live that used to buy, sell and repair stuff like that televisions, vacuum cleaners, electric flymos, washing machines tumble dryers and other electrical appliances. but in the last year there all gone shut up shop. all that technical knowledge and expericence gone. the little industrial units and lock up garages and storage places torn down for new houses. couple that with moving to a proper industrial estate low margins and with prices going up they seem to all have been wiped out or giving up. its a massive shame all that e-waste being generated where once it was repaired or parted out and recycled. but recycling only works if it is profitable at at the moment its not. what a wicked world we live in. or progress or modenisation depends on your view point.
I wish I had the cash to open a warehouse and take in electrical repairs. It is a shame as you say - we all end up de-skilling in a throw away society.
@@dsesuk having been in that industry myself its hard work maybe in a few years when everything has hopefully calmed down find a nice place thats not going to be torn down for houses. i could do a nick bundy or artisan electrics youtube everything and go from there.
Glad to see the hood done propper, not like the kitchen fitter sparks who use a 13A or non at all so as soon as the bulb blows it uses the tracks on the pcb as the fuse instead.... Good job and some laughs as well 👍👍
@@dsesuk true, its a bit stupid as no one will have 7A also the new Bosch washers have a 10A. I have not seen any replacement for these odd fuses yet, have you?
I understand having a toolbox of "wonders". I once worked in a local computer shop where we kept the customers out of the workshop as building PC's is magical and complicated and why the customer pays skilled technicians to fix or upgrade the machine. In fact its not and once a customer saw its just a case of connecting various parts and he said "I could do that" I suspect that translates into the electrical industry - i've changed a plug sockets so why do I need a spark and all those silly tools. Great video
Yep I imagine this runs through many industries but it’s the small jobs that helps keeps businesses tick over, even if realistically anyone with a bit of common sense could do, but they try to keep you out with all kinds of warnings, demanding a professional specialist to command the task! I know when you try to update the BIOS it gives all kinds of warnings even though lots of mobo’s have DualBIOS with a previous backup available if the current one cannot boot, and you can just clear the CMOS anyway if you fuck up. Most people think you’re a smart cookie if you mention you do stuff with computers anyway 😄
Fitted hundreds of these between 86 & 88. Big competition to see who could carry the most packs of bricks in one go, usually up stairs in old ww2 flats, owned by local authority. Great days.
Also tell nigel when he fits the brick the left hand brick slam it against the insulation then fit the right hand brick when you slam it against the insulation it gives it a little more room get the other bricks in without struggling
So if it is colour selective. And one set of LEDs fail. Can you still use the light on the other LEDs or has some P:££ W@∆¥ design it in a way well that won't work.
I imagine it varies between different luminaire designs, so some may continue to work on a different colour if there's a failure of one chipset. I guess it also depends if both sets of LEDs are run from the same driver and if the failed set drags down the driver's output. I haven't come across a failed colour change unit yet, but I will eventually I'm sure!
@@dsesuk The random switch you did show. One HMO I worked at had them next to the boiler. It did give 12 or 24 hours of power so if they had a card meter and ran out they could get running hot water. How it was paid back I don't know. But in one place I did see power monitoring so landlord would know. Was the same as were you was had metering on ground floor measuring all power being used. And each flat have their own metre. Think it is BNO so they would know if a flat was bypassing the meter.
@@alunroberts1439 Yes, apparently it was some kind of override to boost the water heating in peak times. I guess it got disconnected when the water heater circuit was moved to the peak board.
Oddly. Brick has a lower specific heat capacity than water, at 0.85kJ/kg/K at opposed to 4.12kJ/kg/K. Of course they can get somewhat hotter than the 100C you can go to with water
Yes as always I watched to the end . Thank you for a brilliant video. I must say that was a pig of a job , those store ridge heaters are totally shit . Personally I would not have touched it. Thanks for showing up as usual Sean. A good win on the TIS851 for you! Mine is an older model they don't make anymore, but I get on well with it. A chap called Ian on Insta messaged me to say he had a Robin KTS1610 that he was saving from the skip. Might be a non-worker, but if it turns up here I'll be sure to show it!
I have the same trouble with under floor heating programmers , you need to Einstein to program them with a Manuel the size of a bible. I normally just set the time and leave it to the client to set up.
Some of the touchscreen ones aren't so bad, but I know what you mean. My job is just to wire it in (that's the easy part), trying to work out how to use it is someone else's problem!
A prevous girlfriend had storage heaters in her flat and she asked me to take a look at the inline "fused spure" as it was very hot, of course it shouldnt have had a fused spure should have been a 20A switch. She got hold of the housing company and they argued it was fine, after explaining the fuse was "HOT!!" an engineer come and changed for another fused spure, I then emailed the company and explained it should have a 20A switch and perhaps it would be a good idea to check the other 70 flats eventualy they changed but we suspect they didnt change everyones. We made sure we had emails with everything in writing!! ( the manufactures instructions also said it should have a 20A switch)
I grew up with NS heating and my Mother (85 years young) has never had any other sort of heating. She’s always used electric heaters to top-up the heating in the evening when it’s chilly out. It’s a pain in arse though, and Gas or Oil-fired wet CH is much nicer. Nevertheless if this isn’t possible (as here) there are suitable alternatives since Lot20. I can’t be doing with those QRad things, so if we’re asked to replace NS heating we abandon the off-peak and install Rointe electric rads instead. The interface is okayish, I don’t know how I’d get on with one at home myself but it’s what I’d do if I had to for myself. The massive upside is that they’re a piece of cake to fit and no additional 24 hour supply (as it’s now all 24 hour) - and no bricks!!!
Thanks for the Rointe tip Matthew. Sounds like they're worth a closer look. I have one NS heater here myself, but no physical switchover as it's all on a tariff basis these days like you say.

I'm mot happy with the van's appearance which is why I haven't shouted about it on here - but further changes will be made in the next couple of months to sort it out. As for sockets, if we're talking white-plate, we tend to fit the Hager Sollysta range.
@@dsesuk Many thanks David. Brushed silver here, not my choice but you know... women. I like the van personally but each to their own, time to go full white van man?
That was an error, what I meant was that it needs to be fixed as the fuse unit was hanging off the wall. But no, the downflow heater was perfectly fine for the task of heating the bathroom and it's outside of any zones, the bath being on the other side of the room. All we did with that was secure the fuse plate back to the wall as it's still operational.
@@dsesuk Thanks, I’m bunging a couple of those in to some old folks bathroom’s this week and noted that the manufacturers recommendations (along with zones and proximity to surfaces) state the switch/fuse should be outside the bathroom. The units themselves are double insulated but the isolator position made sense. Don’t want any unintentional Dignitas incidents !
@@MS-Patriot2 Preferably, yes, that fuse unit would be better outside of the room, and if being rewired we'd put it there. As BS7671 only gets its knickers in a twist over plug/socket arrangements in bathrooms, high-level fuses and isolators tend not to be too problematic if outside of zone 1. We just needed to twiddle in a couple of new screws in this case!
Your videos with nigel always have me laughing 😃 Question though mate, why would you opt for another storage heater over an electric radiator? Especially now as electric radiators are very energy efficient? Economy 7 is being phased out aswel I believe. Thanks mate.
The owner and I had some protracted discussions about the different types of heater on the market, but in the end this flat is set up for Eco7 and it didn't seem fair to leave the tenant with a primary heating option they would have to use during peak periods. The storage heater allows them to run at peak times like a standard rad if they choose, but it also gives them the choice of using it off-peak.
@@dsesuk that's a fair comment. What a pain in the are arse and expense to have to find another local on peak supply or to pull in a new circuit for the new heaters. I also suppose it depends on your energy supplier and what they charge off peak compared to on peak as the new electric radiators are that good at being energy efficient now, with the added bonus of looking more modern.

Coffee sequence as crazy as ever. I'd guess the kitchen fitter wouldn't be too happy with you resting the end of the drill with wood boring bit on his nice, new kitchen surface at around 12 minutes would he?
Pah, that's the old work surface. It's sitting in a soggy skip as we speak!
Got me there David!
Absolutely fantastic 😂😂
Old storage heater bricks make great garden edgers.
You should have reversed the roller coaster footage so you were going forward haha. Awesome video guys!
Glad to see the hood done propper, not like the kitchen fitter sparks who use a 13A or non at all so as soon as the bulb blows it uses the tracks on the pcb as the fuse instead.... Good job and some laughs as well 👍👍
That curious 7A fuse will be just the job I'm sure! Although if it does go, it won't ever be replaced by another 7A fuse!
@@dsesuk true, its a bit stupid as no one will have 7A also the new Bosch washers have a 10A. I have not seen any replacement for these odd fuses yet, have you?
Why are you facing backwards on the roller coaster?
Nige held up the plans the wrong way around when building the studio.
Got some coin you have - uni lite gear and them Werner’s ain’t cheap !! Had a splurge chap?
Loads of laughs as usual.... cheers to you both XDXD
Thanks for ploughing through it Marcus!
Fantastic as usual
Good work and I do like a kinetic switch or two
They come in handy Keith. Thanks as always for sitting through the nonsense!
@@dsesuk
Thankyou for hard work on content
Look forward to you and nigel videos
Fitted hundreds of these between 86 & 88. Big competition to see who could carry the most packs of bricks in one go, usually up stairs in old ww2 flats, owned by local authority. Great days.
Replaced 4 in a fourth floor flat in Leicester a few years ago no lift and by myself. It was a lonnnng day.
0:24 you nearly made me spit my drink out 😆😆😆
New megger looks fast and dangerous imo
The kewtechs look a bit toyish imo
Also tell nigel when he fits the brick the left hand brick slam it against the insulation then fit the right hand brick when you slam it against the insulation it gives it a little more room get the other bricks in without struggling
Good tip. I won't pass it on to Nige though - I pay him to struggle through the day.
@@dsesuk 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I can confirm that the switch with the press written on it was in fact my girlfriends panic switch
Got your telephone voice on David! F*ck off with that poncy voice & hit the wine with Nigel!!!! You are a LEGEND
Well, if you're ordering me onto the wine, who am I to argue? Cheers!
New van?
Same old tranny, just a new dress.
I heard dave slagging off storage heater controls and straight away PTSD kicked in and I had visions of dimplex quantums.
Oddly. Brick has a lower specific heat capacity than water, at 0.85kJ/kg/K at opposed to 4.12kJ/kg/K.
Of course they can get somewhat hotter than the 100C you can go to with water
Daft as ever. Good stuff.
Yes as always I watched to the end .
Thank you for a brilliant video. I must say that was a pig of a job , those store ridge heaters are totally shit . Personally I would not have touched it. I like your new TIS voltage indicator. I won the TIS 851 from eFIXX it has a built in proving unit I think it’s a great bit of kit.
Fantastic video guy’s very interesting. Thank as always 👍👍👍
@@dsesuk great I look forward to it and I am sure you’ll love it
@@Dog-whisperer7494 I reckon so too. It's an intruiging thing!
It’s a fortic cylinder, there’s a header tank at the top.
A foreskin cylinder? Well, I guess that fits with the phallic shape.
I have the same trouble with under floor heating programmers , you need to Einstein to program them with a Manuel the size of a bible. I normally just set the time and leave it to the client to set up.
Some of the touchscreen ones aren't so bad, but I know what you mean. My job is just to wire it in (that's the easy part), trying to work out how to use it is someone else's problem!
i dont mind the interface maybe cause im.... slightly younger ;)
People with greenhouses take my storage heater bricks to line the floor for heat retention
Has Nige ever struck you Mr Savery? Some of the abuse he endures is epic! 🤣
It's come close at times. One day maybe. One day.
Your knocking the 90s storage heaters which I agree are useless but previous was coal fires lol
Fucking legends. Well done. All the best from a worn out burnt up retired spark.
I see your using the super cam Dave. Are you still using the ferret cam are not?
Both are on the van - whether either is charged when we need it may be a different matter!
Storage heater bricks make a very effective lining for a barbecue.
Hmm. Interesting....
So awful I had to watch it again. The picture window at the end is genius. Have you turned adverts on or is youtube just monitising you? I like the Fusion LED batten with connection in middle but a bit pricey.
Sorry John, midroll ads shouldn't be on but I seem to have missed unticking the setting. Remember, all this stuff is available ad-free on Odysee: odysee.com/@dseselectric:e
Dave I would be very concerned for your pal Nigel if I was you, think he needs to cut down on the spunk diet but then again I remember everything from that video with Jimmy beck 😏 Some amazing laughs to get me thru the flu, great videos as always Dave!
Those SBS boards are awesome though!!!
Gotta say, I like their gear!
The electrical pub talk.
Van looks fucking ace btw. Btw David, what 2 gang socket would you recommend?
I'm mot happy with the van's appearance which is why I haven't shouted about it on here - but further changes will be made in the next couple of months to sort it out. As for sockets, if we're talking white-plate, we tend to fit the Hager Sollysta range.
@@dsesuk Many thanks David. Brushed silver here, not my choice but you know... women. I like the van personally but each to their own, time to go full white van man?
@@pauledwards9493 Ah, well for decorative sockets, maybe Click Mode?
David, at 7’22” you show a wall mounted fan heater that’s “gotta go”. Was that because it had been mounted directly over the bath ! ?
@@dsesuk Cheers, I appreciate your diligent but always pragmatic approach on these things the IET spend countless hours foaming their gussets on.
There’s a sideline for Nigel building BBQs out of old NS bricks, I think…
Your videos with nigel always have me laughing 😃
Question though mate, why would you opt for another storage heater over an electric radiator?
