God bless you! I have just recently started "signing" (ASL) music for our Church choir. This song is among the favorite of all the songs I do.
With the choir singing, the congregation says it's like a conductor leading a symphony. Not so much my "skill" as the fact the American Sign Language forms are an inspiration of themselves.
(I joke that I joined the choir and, on day one, the Music Minister suggested I take up sign language.)

Any church hymnal would likely include this hymn, but as for the story behind the hymns, there is a book we bought years ago called “101 Hymn Stories” by Kenneth Osbeck which gives the background for each hymn (it’ a good book).
