  • The bikes 2nd Piston Change. My Supermoto Ktm 530 EXC. A how to on how i did the swap. I was supposed to change the Cam Chain too but I had borrowed the wrong special tool. So 1 week later i did the swap. My bike had blow-by symptoms with the old piston, and im hoping to seal the piston rings good and tight with a hard break in. The 530 has the XC4 motor, which is basically the same for newer (2012 and forward) exc-bikes such as the 500 exc. For the RFS (2003-2007) motor i recomend another video which i'll link down bellow.

    Realistic time for you first time doing this: 8 h
    you shouldn't talk while doing mechanic stuff.. takes way longer time. but it gets more structured that way.
    At Friday i started collecting tools at 9 pm. and then i called it a day at midnight by then i had gotten down to the cylinder. Then the next day (sat) i started working at 6 pm and left at 10 pm with the bike almost done. So considering im vloging + late night mechanic + my first time doing this + many mistakes = 8 hours, but next time I feel like i could do it in 3h.

    Need to do this on my 08 xcf w 250 this week. Rebuilt the carb last week and decided to remove the lower bolts on the subframe, loosen the top bolts and swing the subframe with the airbox and rubber boot up and out of the way. A few wires on the battery and it was a HUGE help to work on and reinstall the carb. Previous owner of the bike had one of the rubber locating fingers that align with the tab on the carb folded under and was causing an air leak.
    Surprised how fast and easy it was to r+r the carb with subframe swung up and out of the way, and tons of room to get at things!!!

      There's a punched/engraved letter in the cylinder, buy the corresponding piston size.

    Nice video, how did you selected the piston size (tolerance) before dissasebling the engine?, does the cylinder nedded to be rectified considering the damage seen on the piston?

    Now I understand why this is so expensive at the dealer, might consider doing this after the winter, total ride count is 140 ish and will not ride more that 10hr in all winter, but can also do it on next oil change, the faster the better

    The carb is a lot easier to remove and refit if you push back on the air box boot. It is fiddly, but that rubber pushes back enough to give you enough room to free the front boot and manipulate the carb out or in.

      thealvaco buy a cheap bike and just try it out, little 2 strokes are a lot easyer and not very much things can go wrong. If you now how to do it try it on a big bike. I’m 14 and I started on a chinese pitbike and now I replace pistons out of 250cc 4-strokes.

    Besides being great info, this was really entertaining to watch. My grandpa was 100% Norwegian, from the Landsem farm. He came over on a boat at 17 with his uncle and w/out a penny to his name and no idea how to speak English. He died a millionaire b/c he worked his ass off. This dude reminds me of my grandpa. Awwww. I know, cheesy. Who cares. So, great vid. New subscriber. I ride a '13 500 EXC with 202 hours and 6200 miles. Just checked valves and they're perfect. These motors are ridiculous. What signs will I get when the piston is shot?

    • @jms415

      BTW.....did you measure the inside of the piston for wear? I heard that some guys have to get it honed and then they apply the "Nikasil" coating...

    • @BLDH
      @BLDH  8 років тому

      no i didnt. these cylinders are nikasil treated and you dont "hoon" them. just lock and load! ;) like even when the piston got really worn the cylinder kept intact due to it being so strong with the nikasil

    Hey, you shouldn't put oil on cylinder bolt oil never touches these bolts, liquid isnt compressible. if you bolt it to hard, you can brake the cylinder. No need for oil ever on bolts. Good job tho

    • @alangodin2090
      @alangodin2090 7 років тому

      well, sometimes you should oil bolts to get a good torque but you're right, not too much because it isn't compressible.

    • @MrJoshuaBe
      @MrJoshuaBe 7 років тому +2

      Not sure of the torquing process on this bike, but when I did head gasket's on my 2000 Mustang, the manual specifically said to put 5w-30 motor oil on the threads of the bolts so in certain cases it is alright. I would say a thin coat could only be beneficial and remember the threads do not form a perfect seal so the oil will likely be able to escape if it build pressure, especially very large and course threads like most cyl. head bolts are. That being said I wouldn't dump oil into the bolt hole or something, just a very thin coat with a oiled rag or something.

    • @joshpodolsky7740
      @joshpodolsky7740 7 років тому

      The head bolts do have oil on them, I just did mine, so I can confirm.

    • @mapexlegend
      @mapexlegend 6 років тому

      Oil is often need on head bolts to achieve the correct torque and also correct crush on the head gasket. The bolts should not be swimming in oil because as you said oil is incompressible and will very easy crack cases. Only enough to aid in rotation of the threads.

    Seriously you did not hone the cylinder for new rings to seat?? AND did not even decarb the head? Pop valves out and inspect valves seats? Check valve clearance prior to cam removal so IF shim change is needed it can simply be on reassembly? Seems silly to ignore the other things and only change piston?

    Lets see engine burns oil, piston skirt coating is gone and piston scratched. Smart money in a case like this would be see if the cylinder could just be honed and still maintain proper clearance to a stock piston diameter...which is unlikely.So at that point you would buy an oversized piston and have the cylinder bored and honed to the correct (RA) surface average roughness and to the correct piston skirt to cylinder wall clearance for the oversized piston. Then install piston rings in bore square about 3/4" from the top of the bore and make sure the gaps between the ends of the rings are correct (file to fit). This is the only way to ensure proper ring seal and piston life.Congrats on doing the job yourself, but to present this as a tutorial on how to replace a piston and rings, without including this information, is kind of a disservice to others IMO

      1bottlefed HERE IS THE INFORMATION............The cylinder has a Nickasil coating on the bore. Don't hone it. If there is scoring you need to replace the cylinder.

      @@Dazza. You can actually resurface the nickasil coating after boring it. There are couple of places that do those in europe, and the cost is cheaper than to buy a new cylinder. Also, for the piston skirt marks, theyre not looking good on this piston, but anything less than that and i'd say theres a chance the cylinder wall wouldnt be scoured, as nickasil is really hard coating.
