Such a fascinating concept. I have always wondered what would happen to any astronauts/cosmonauts stranded onboard the ISS in the event of a nuclear war. I wrote a fictional story based on this concept during my creative writing degree years. In my story, the astronauts were preparing to return to Earth with a life support system, initially designed for future crewed missions to Mars, to help New Zealand prepare for the arrival of the nuclear winter.
I'm definitely keen to watch this movie but I highly doubt any astronauts would turn against their fellow cosmonauts (and vice versa) under such circumstances.

Well they are pretty much screwed
On the ground thinkings will be worse than in space nuclear winter with -20C in hottest regions on earth (so in Europe or America it will be like from -60C to -90C) and radioactive fallout which will slowly kill everything what survive first impacts and somehow didn’t freeze down
in space on the other hand resources will eventually run out soon or later

The whole scenario is ridiculous- not because of the nuclear war, but the fact that all human life would be doomed on a planet literally burning below them, and therefore all those on the station are doomed as well. It would just take a little longer for them to die, having no supplies sent to them. There are no Walmarts in space. But the special effects look pretty cool.

Not to mention that the ISS needs a boost every month or else it'll de-orbit within a couple years. That usually involves spacecraft from the ground docking with the ISS and giving it a boost which obviously isn't going to happen anymore if the world ended.

I still think the best movie to watch and what should be required watching by Congress and every school district is On The Beach which tells the story of a lone American submarine that survived the nuclear holocaust and found its way to Australia where they found humanity still alive and well, but knowing that the radiation circulating the northern hemisphere was slowly migrating south and would kill them too. As each has to deal with their ending, the duties of the submarine crew and her command conflict with the realities of the people ashore in Australia. The movie left me with one idea: nuclear war must never, ever happen.

Yes, an alternative plot would have been to escape in pods/shuttles (maybe one would die or sacrifice their life to save the others, while manually giving the middle finger to their government in their last moments).
They would manage to crashland in some isolated place, like Greenland and survive until this pointless war passed (provided the nuclear explosions didn't damage that part of the world).
Or perhaps another plot could have nothing to do with the Russian and U.S government tensions, and have the astronauts deal with a clever psychopath disguised as one of them who came on board. Why, you ask? Just because he or she is evil and could.
Or they could have rescued some alien entity and hide it from both governments because of what they could do to it (studying and dissecting it, imprisoning it for years to come). It would be a tale of moral quandaries. Yeah, I know this was already done with E.T. If the alien somehow escapes, it would be a deux ex machina move.

This is an incredible trailer for what looks like to be a really thought provoking question: What would happen if Nuclear War did somehow breakout between the major Nuclear powers? Would the astronauts on board the space station obey orders to seize the station (if they ever came), or would both sides try to pull together to maximize their chances of survival (in this scenario, there would be no more supplies or help coming ever again.)

    • @89five3five

@AJafterhourz this isn't a hard concept to come up with. Besides even if it was truly original, that automatically doesn't make it a good movie. The protagonist in the movie was a lesbian/poc (of course right), then she became a traitor when she killed a fellow American. Killed the guy who only kept thinking about his kids throughout the whole movie. Therefore this movie sucked.

Thats not a fight you can easily run from or get away from, you're in space and most likely wouldn't be able to land on earth for some time.

It used regurgitated tiresome tropes of paranoia and pitting people against each other in a pointless war instead of growing a huge pair and going against their governments in working together. If I wanted to see a paranoia film involving tension, I would have watched "The Thing."
The old series, Babylon 5 did it better (written by one SOLE writer and not a bunch of ego-driven ones where one writer would fuck up a continuing thread plot of another) had Earth declare martial law everywhere with its colonies in a blatant act of xenophobia and tyranny.
But instead of being an obedient lapdog that they were expected to be and follow orders, Babylon 5 went against Earth government, declared independence and protected the alien citizens living there. They also supported other human colonies who chose to side with them until the Earth government could be exorcised of its demonic President and jackass cohorts.

I know, this was a turd of a film. Instead of following government orders like the little lapdogs they are, they should have given them them the middle finger, work together and plot to escape back to Earth in an isolated region.
Maybe some inspirational speech by Dr. Foster on why they are about to revolt and thanking her coworkers for having faith in each other (if coming off naive). Then they all pile in an escape shuttle and go land in some isolated part of the world and manage to survive until the war is over.
Maybe another scene of one of the astronauts standing and admiring a beautiful scenery of nature and conversing with Dr. Foster. He or she confesses to Foster of how pointless the war was, ruining their beautiful planet and how they are glad that they didn't fall for being manipulated by their governments into fighting each other. Science is greater and bigger than that.
Dr. Foster then narrates what happened in the aftermath at the film's conclusion, while keeping the same question from the film, "What happens now? I honestly don't know."
