Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a complication of diabetes that happens when blood vessels in the legs become blocked or narrowed due to fat deposits. The result is reduced blood flow to the feet and legs. This makes it harder for blood to flow through your arteries and the feet are most at risk of tissue damage. If tissue damage is very bad, then toes, feet, or even legs may need to be amputated.
Amputation can be avoided if intervention is made prior. Our vascular and endovascular surgeon, Dr. Leong Yew Pung spoke about how vascular interventions can help prevent amputation.
糖尿病足部溃疡，肇因于长期血糖控制不佳，所引起之下肢病变。患者往往会伴随着外周边动脉疾病（Peripheral Artery Disease，简称PAD）。这些病变会造成足部感觉、运动、循环功能与结构上的异常，使得糖尿病患的足部，较一般人更容易产生伤口与感染的现象。若伤口持续恶化，进而演变成溃疡与坏死，严重者甚至必须要截肢。
CVSKL 血管外科专科医生梁耀鹏受访时指出对于严重的PAD患者，则必须进行外周血管造影和血管再成形术或血管扩张手术，即俗称的“通波仔”。
这项医学手术通常用于治疗心脏病患，将前端附有气球的导管沿着导引钢丝，到达血管狭窄处，由体外加压使气球膨胀，借气球膨胀的力量撑开狭窄的血管，以改善血液流通。有的时候，也必须要做外周动脉搭桥手术（Bypass surgery）才能救到脚免于截肢。
