  • Do trans people experience menopause? Watch Ryan's story and find out.
In this episode we meet Ryan, a transgender man. Ryan knew his whole life that he was a male in a female body, and luckily, he grew up in a supportive family who have been by his side throughout his journey.
Ryan decided to start his transition with hormones and soon after had a full hysterectomy - uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, the whole thing. It left him with what he describes as ‘an empty room’ in his abdomen, but more importantly, the surgery and hormones put him simultaneously into puberty and into menopause. At age 30.
After his surgery his family came to rally around him. And a few days after they left he found himself on the bathroom floor, suicidal. The crisis line led him to counselling where he finally had it explained to him that the lack of estrogen following his surgery had thrown him into menopause - the depression, the suicidal thoughts, hot flashes, and other symptoms.
With support he has learned to manage his testosterone therapy so that he stays out of menopause. His best advice is to ensure that you have someone checking in on you if you are in a depressive state. He acknowledges that the medical system isn’t focused on menopause and mid-life women so it is necessary to make sure you have a solid support system.

I think the biggest issue was that there wasn't enough time between starting testosterone and hysterectomy. The testosterone wasn't yet established as to dominant hormone, so it makes sense that menopause wasn't effectively mitigated. I just had my ovaries pulled and I had symptoms of menopause but nothing unmanagable. My ovaries were also not fully dormant and kept having cysts that would grow until the burst. The initial hormone crash has been rough, but so far I'm functional and eating more or less normally. If not for the established testosterone I'd be having severe severe symptoms. So jonestly I think medical transition needs to happen well before menopause to be most effective.

Thanks for sharing...funny about all that...does not get talked about.Does not matter which way you go FtM or MtF..Menopause + puberty is it.Ditto for the doctors, most are male.I have to use patches to keep myself, in the zone.Thank you for sharing. All the best with your journey, even though am going MtF & quite late- in life.Have no regrets, personally about all this. When you 'know' u know, come out & stop struggling- it is a huge relief.xxxxReikki Kyra Jonsun.

Wow! Taking Ryan's ovaries out might have been a big mistake. Nobody told him that this is the body of a woman and this is what happens when you remove estrogen from it it raises havoc. Hopefully the testosterone helps Ryan with the symptoms.

The parents: "were fine about signing permission for the double mastectomy!"
    Did I hear that right?

Ryan had major complications with his period and wanted a Hysterectomy which his parents signed off on. No mention of a double mastectomy.

Ryan seems like a very likeable person, but it sounds like she just wanted to be like her brothers and was a lesbian, not really trans. Saying she wanted to pee standing up isn't gender dysphoria. Ok, anyway hope she/he is happy with the changes and doesn't regret surgeries, like the hysterectom.

What happened to her is not funny. She's laughing but, some day, if she realizes, she's gonna cry. I don't believe that's gonna happen, though: she can live in denial her entire life.
