The Real Deal on the OP-1 Field: Two Years of Use

- In this video, I’m responding to a comment asking if the OP-1 Field is really worth the $2,000 price tag. Having used the OP-1 Field for about two years now, I share my honest thoughts on its strengths and weaknesses. While I was fortunate to receive mine directly from Teenage Engineering, this review focuses on my personal experience, including what I love about it and areas where it could improve. If you’re considering buying the OP-1 Field, this video should give you a clear idea of what to expect. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more music gear reviews and insights!

Had my FIELD for over a year and I'm still obsessed with it. It's a happy accident generator all the time. It's nice on my grand piano - it's nice with guitar, everything. Fun scratchpad. Bringing in radio through the vocoder, sampling sounds from around my environment and over-effecting them, etc...
love comments like this. it's become a swiss army knife more than anything. not what I wanted it for when I got it - I wanted a tool that is mostly standalone and I can make and complete full tracks or beats on it alone with... it hasn't been that for me (yet). and thats okay because I am getting a lot of use in other unexpected ways.
@@Khordmaster And don't lie...how many times have you taken it upstairs into bed and just messed around with beats while watching the game on TV? For me, 100x.
@@Station2Station-du2gh precisely zero … I will def try that out tho. Truth be told most of the time for the past year or so it’s been kinda sitting on my nord piano all connected up for my livestreams … I’ll be taking it out and about and exploring more when my tx6 is repaired and I can use the tx6 with my Nord for the livestreaming purpose
wine and synths should be a regularly occurring segment
I mean it's a stellar idea. I just recorded another one, but its 6am now, so this time it was green tea and synths :)
I've had one for a couple months and its been totally worth it to me. Yes the price hurt but when I think about it, I have blown over 2k on dumber shit over the years easlity. The OP-1 has been an indispensable creative tool for me and I love bringing it with me everywhere. This thing has allowed me to break from being in the studio for all my ideas. The ability to change environments so easily, the battery life, the sound quality, the novelty, the versatility, and the simple fact that you can turn it on and off anytime and all your settings are right there is awesome. Took me a couple years to get over the price hurdle but I am glad I did.
I FEEL YOU!
Please do more chord tutorials and more content/tutorials with the op-1 field in general. I bought one earlier this year and haven’t used it in a few weeks but I absolutely love going dawless with it
Just recorded a 40 min one that I think you'll enjoy. stay tuned :)
@@Khordmaster looking forward

I've always *wanted* an OP1, but the price is what's really stopped me. I am trying to be happy with the gear I have! :P
honestly that's the best move... only switch to getting something else once you feel like you need something to spark creativity!
A little off topic here but I had the OP1 and never really bonded with it. Sampling and multitracking (to a degree) in compact format was the initial idea. So my quest sent me down the rabbit hole; MPC One, Polyend Tracker, Digitakt,... they all failed at being inspiring, creative tools. I found my grail in the often overlooked 1010music Blackbox. Overbuilt, spec'd out and cognitively agreeable workflow; this thing is either a mini Abbleton Live, a 16 track looper, a competent sequencer, a granular synth, a proper sampler and drum machine... The guys who designed this had laser focus on music making, unlike whatever the hell TE is doing with their playful, colorful hardware. I feel they try so hard being clever, that they skimp on usability. Swedes should know better.
do I need to check out the 1010?! I've heard of it but haven't checked it out yet!
@@Khordmaster Oh man, yes, no question. There's a LOT ("lot" is a relative number in our world) of people using it as their centerpiece for a dawless setup as it's super flexible and adaptive but easy enough that you don't need a manual to operate it... and it sounds awesome. This best kept secret is also gimmick-free. I encourage you to look into it. I've been dreaming about this workflow since the 90s. Cheers!
Always love your perspective, K! I hope it reaches the ears at TE, but I do wish this could've focused on what specific changes you'd like them to make rather than calling out some crazy on the internet. What would make this device worth $2K for you/us? Be you always, but shorter, concise, and focused content on these devices/issues would be awesome, especially for those of us without a TE connection. Your voice means a lot!
APPRECIATE the comment! I will make a follow up with specific things I think would set the OP-1 field to a different level!
you do 'you' mate that's all i'd like to see from people o YT their personal takes on gear.
thats the plan!!! thanks man
It's an excellent sound design tool
That’s an area I want to (and have been) taking a closer look at. I feel the stock pre sets on it are uninspiring but it’s causing me to take a closer look at designing my own sounds and saving them.
Love the t-shirt!
Haha thanks! What’s your favorite cartoon
This poor bastard probably bought an OP-1F like me and now the XY exists just as the return window closes 😭
Lmaooooo…. I’m not a bastard but I am poor 😅
This can't be the same guy that when it first came out he said if you're into making professional music get the op-1 field.it's worth the money if you're making professional music like him. I called you on being a bull$hitter in the beginning and this confirms it lol smh #snakeoilsalesman

comments like this means I'm winning. appreciate you
@@Khordmaster winning at what? Suckering your followers to buying some bull$hit?! So you can brown nose teenage engineering for more equipment?! Real winner 🤦🏾♂️

@@KhordmasterIt doesn’t though, that’s deflecting my guy. Did you not say that? Do you not work for TE in some capacity?
Question what maybe keyboard do you recommend for a beginner at a low cost that will work with my Mac products
What’s up man … are you interested in buying my 49 key launchkey mk3? I have the box and cables and it’s in mint condition
Yes ✨❤️🔥✨ books of chords
oh its coming!
are shrimp and crab legs delicious?
What's the original 🤔 price? 🇺🇸 🌎 please khordmaster?
Crabs at Christmas that’s why Santa missed us
The original op1 ? I think like 800 used now. Not sure if they’re sold brand new
@@Khordmaster thanks 😊
whoever left that long ass comment needs to call they momma up and talk to her for an hour. just sayin
ha - which one are you referring to?
I love the field, there’s nothing like it, but… I’ve only finished a few songs on it because it’s so tedious. On my mpc live 2, I’ve finished countless songs WITH vocals completely standalone and just mastered them in logic. There’s just nothing like the op, wish there was at a cheaper price.
What’s your name?

Imo (I’ve owned both the OP-1 and Field version) it’s not worth the price tag. However that said it is fun to use occasionally for simple ideas.
Yes you can find other options. I wouldn’t spend $2000 on it again unless they upgrade the sequencers, more than 4 tracks, and drop that price.
haha I feel man ... I'm glad I own mine because I consistently think of new ways how it could make sense for my ever changing use cases :)
@@Khordmaster yeah if I got it for free I’m all in.
Smh. Mc101 I better than either OP 1 version.
I mean it's cool.
I get it...
Big BANG. Lil Thang
Smh. $450 would've been solid
sounds like to you it is which is dope! i haven't used that one (yet) but better is definitely subjective right? all depends on what workflow / sounds / etc. speak to you more
NO!
OH AIGHTTTTTT
The truth is that the op is not worth no $2,000 at all, even the KO 2 way way way better then the op and its not even price closed to it, and it we want to say that op it worth that because its a mobile gear that you can do music on the go, well i would say an iphone or ipad are the best in the category of mobile music making gear, because like you already know, we can turn and iphone or ipad into a complete pro digital audio work station, and you can always carry and have it you anywhere which you cant say the same about the op or even the ko 2 which is way way better and cheaper then the op !!
Ko 2 is not better. If it had more memory, possibly.
my name jeff
