Spokane (/ˌspoʊˈkæn/ (About this soundlisten) spoh-KAN)[8] is a city in and the county seat of Spokane County, Washington, United States. It is in eastern Washington along the Spokane River adjacent to the Selkirk Mountains and west of the Rocky Mountain foothills, 92 miles (148 km) south of the Canada-U.S. border, 18 miles (30 km) west of the Washington-Idaho border, and 279 miles (449 km)[9] east of Seattle along Interstate 90.
Spokane is the economic and cultural center of the Spokane metropolitan area, the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene combined statistical area, and the Inland Northwest. It is known as the birthplace of Father's Day, and its official nickname is the "Lilac City". A pink double flower cultivar of the common lilac, known as Syringa vulgaris 'Spokane', is named for the city.[10] The city and the wider Inland Northwest area are served by Spokane International Airport, 5 miles (8 km) west of downtown Spokane. According to the 2010 Census, Spokane had a population of 208,916, making it the second-largest city in Washington, and the 100th-largest city in the United States. In 2019, the United States Census Bureau estimated the city's population at 222,081 and the population of the Spokane Metropolitan Area at 573,493.
The first people to live in the area, the Spokane tribe (their name meaning "children of the sun" in Salishan), lived off plentiful game. David Thompson explored the area with the westward expansion and establishment of the North West Company's Spokane House in 1810. This trading post was the first long-term European settlement in Washington. Completion of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1881 brought settlers to the Spokane area. The same year it was officially incorporated as a city under the name of Spokane Falls (it was reincorporated under its current name ten years later).[12] In the late 19th century, gold and silver were discovered in the Inland Northwest. The local economy depended on mining, timber, and agriculture until the 1980s. Spokane hosted the first environmentally themed World's Fair at Expo '74.
Many of the downtown area's older Romanesque Revival-style buildings were designed by architect Kirtland Kelsey Cutter after the Great Fire of 1889. The city is also home to the Riverfront and Manito parks, the Smithsonian-affiliated Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, the Davenport Hotel, and the Fox and Bing Crosby theaters.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Spokane, and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist serves as that of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane. The Spokane Washington Temple in the east of the county serves The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gonzaga University was established in 1887 by the Jesuits, and the private Presbyterian Whitworth University was founded three years later and moved to north Spokane in 1914.[13]
In sports, the region's professional and semi-professional sports teams include the Spokane Indians in Minor League Baseball and Spokane Chiefs in junior ice hockey. The Gonzaga Bulldogs collegiate basketball team competes at the Division I level. As of 2010, Spokane's major daily newspaper, The Spokesman-Review, had a daily circulation of over 76,000.

Coming down the freeway seeing all of downtown is the best feeling in the world. If you from 509 you know what im talking about it
Definitely
Yes
I lived in Spokane for 58 years. Good to see the old home town once again.
honestly, spokane and downtown spokane is becoming such a ghetto place. it’s sad really, me and my grandma always went downtown every sunday to go shopping, get ice cream, go eat at the Safari Room, but now it’s kind of trashy :( hopefully after covid leaves and summer rolls in, it’ll become more friendly again
Its so much nicer than it was in the early 2000s when the Meth and lab thing was at its peak. At least before Cornona it was. It has gotten so much nicer in the 10 years i've lived here. The rent has also gone up though =/
Nice video! Sad to see so many people talking crap about Spokane and downtown. No, it’s not perfect. But we live in a beautiful city.
Exactly. I absolutely love it here. Just avoid hillyard, parts of brownes additions, and west central. My biggest problem with spokane is the homeless problem and how the city is managing it
Yes but the homeless population makes it not beautiful in a way. Been here 20 years and honestly it's not that beautiful with humans pooping in plain view.
I was born here in Spokane and lived here most of my life. The city has gone down the crapper. 20 years ago I could walk down town at night I would not do it now.
That's what ya'll get for voting democrats.
I'm from Norway, and I have been to Seattle, and Spokane many times. I LOVE Spokane! All though I usually stay in the North Town area. North Town mall and Sharis and I have a perfect day in Spokane! Love from Norway!
Lived here 44yrs.
Old town ran by old money!
Bless our sad town.
Spokane is so fucked up. Lived here my whole life and im tired of our mayor pretending it's lavish.
I grew up in Spokane from 1950 to 2013. Left for warmer, very warm Phoenix, Arizona. I've come back in the summers for the weather except for 2020. It's always nice to see Spokane. Thanks.
This is where Mackelmore did most of the filming for his video "downtown"
Because Ryan Lewis is from here
Right. He signed my constitution book
Looks all cute.
Till you actually go down there personally lmao
Right. I work in Spokane and was thinking the exact same thing.
I smell meth. Dangerous
lol get used to seeing all the construction stuff, it's never ending. esp in dt spokane.
it's like a mini Seattle
@@pissandcornflakes9119 it's like Seattle and Florida had a fucking baby and it grew up on meth
That little bit of construction lol try living and working in DC lol
I literally live in Spokane and this came up wtf
UA-cam uses location as well as a few other things to recommend videos I'm guessing everyone in the comments is at least around spokane area
same here. and i work downtown early mornings. tweakers everywhere.
Lol me too! UA-cam is creepy, he’s driving early in the morning when all the tweakers are asleep. Trust me I live downtown.
Same
Driving through downtown Spokane is a breeze compared to Seattle. Was this filmed on a Sunday? I'm just wondering since there are far fewer cars and pedestrians. I'm still grateful for the skywalks that were installed for Expo '74. I grew up in southern California, and I love living here in Spokane.
Everything was shut down from the pandemic. It's NEVER like that normally. Traffic is usually a shit show.
@@shawna0653, I was born here in Spokane at the old Sacred Heart Hospital. I grew up in southern California, then we came back about forty years ago, so my viewpoint on bad traffic comes from a different place. Taking an hour to move a few miles in Los Angles is something I don't ever want to repeat.
@@shawna0653 It sounds to me like you've never been to Los Angeles.
How about San Francisco or even San Diego ?
If you did, you'd see REAL shit shows.
You people have it sweet, and you don't even know it !!! WTF !!!
I'm moving from Sacramento CA to Spokane.
I just can't wait to enjoy your "shit show".
It looks like my cup of tea. ... jkulik919@gmail.com
@@JosephKulik2016 San Diego isn’t bad at all I live here what are you talking about??
Maybe some pictures of the river....waterfront park..flour mill...cathedrals....hospital area......the arena..
Awesome
Its like an 1800's city with 2021 cars and roads. Kinda cool.
It's nice when you don't know the town and see through all the cracks.
Set to the perfect music for such a day in our lovely city! nice job!
I wonder if this will be nostalgic to me someday
All of the criticism... I moved here from Salt Lake County, Utah 4 years ago. The fact that therebis SOOOO MUCH LESS VIOLENCE AND GANGS IN SPOKANE saved my grandson's life. Sure, there are areas that are more run down, have more homelessness, have occasional shootings, etc. but it is not comparable to many other cities, believe me. People here care about eachother too and that is a huge antectdote to hopelessness.
That's not enough to keep a city running sweetie. Ya'll need to protest about the homeless situation for many obvious reasons. It's unsanitary, keeps visitors and tourists away, unsafe environment, crime increase, economy decline, etc...
That's funny, I'm moving from Salt Lake city utah to Washington next year and I was looking at Spokane as a option haha
I love Spokane
City looks much better at summer in time, lots green trees...nice...
Lol the music does not match how it actually feels driving around downtown Spokane
I’m like *anxiety*
The music is like *anxiety is gone*
Lol
Agreed. When I go down town I listen to screamo bc that's how I feel when I go down there 😂
Real
I've lived in Spokane most of my life....watch your insults lol
Спасибо,впервые посетил этот город.
My 20th was there. Now i am middle of 30th....i always want to go there
I’M SO GLAD I DON’T LIVE THERE ANYMORE.
I was born in Spokane and brought to India and ever since I wanted to go back just to know what being "home" feels like , it looks like a decent place and well I'd love to stay there for a while .
My home town. Ha. Love it.
You either love Spokane or you hate it xD
@@thatsickmao or love to hate it. LOL.
@@adamsmith4787 true true
first of all when I go down this street I don't hear that music playing and secondly there's a lot more potholes than this car is hitting.. alot!!
How convenient that you skipped Division and 2nd Avenue and Browne. You know, where all the homeless are sleeping on all the streets and littering their crap.
There not the only ones throwing trash.. seen alot of yuppies with big dodge trucks throw trash out there window. But definitely a homeless problem going on
There are more houses than there are people in the u.s. eat the rich, Artificial scarcity is keeping you a slave to capitalism.
@@billyshakespeare488 More houses than there are people? LMAO. But are u saying they should give free homes to the homeless? If homes are for free, nobody will work, everybody will depend on the government. And all that leads to economic decline. Plus, i find it funny how in blue cities run by democrats, the homeless situation is out of control. And if there weren't rich people in this country, we wouldn't have an economy. Rich people are the ones who make a country. if there are no rich people, and everybody is poor and depending on the government... it will become a dictatorship. Unless that's what you want.
@@royery if things stay the way they are economic inequality will become exasperated more than it already has, look at how many people became homeless in the last year because not enough was done. We give homes to everyone, not just the homeless. There are more things than property to spend your time/money on, if I didn't have to pay rent that wouldn't make me want to quit my job, that's not an accurate equivalency. Go to Arizona, go to Tennessee, go to North Carolina, go to Texas, theses are all states with massive homeless problems. It's not weather the state is blue or red, it's the size of the cities. Red cities have just as many homeless as blue ones do there are just less red major cities. If production was In the hands of the workers we wouldn't need rich people for the economy to run, I'm talking massive wealth redistribution and then reorganization of the private sector. No more corporations to influence laws, no more private insurance companies or prisons, no more private banks, no more jerrymandering, an ACTUAL democracy run by the votes of the people/workers and not the electoral college.
How do you expect us to get jobs without proper shelter, hygiene, clothing, ID, social security card, or birth certificates? Experience homeless before making assumptions.
Why?
Brings me memories from when my reincarnation therapist took me to a past life in Spokane, Washington in 1905. I've never been there in this life.
Sheeesh seeing the hate comments on this video. Hate makes waste. The hate against the homeless makes me sad since they are also humans too. Be respectful, and Spokane is not a bad city at all if you get to know the people who live in it. Its a usual medium sized city.
Tell that to a homeless person next time they try to assault you. Tell that to a homeless next time you see them doing drugs, tell that to a homeless next time you see them peeing and pooping right on the streets. You love your homeless people, but your city has become a shit show literally thanks to them. Might as well, let them all do all that in front or in your property... if you are all about supporting them no? I bet you won't... And its not about hating the homeless, it's about criticizing the local government, cause its their fault.
Just don’t drive through “Felony Flats”
В дантауне запах мочи, тысячи бездомных, короче помойка
I don't know about anybody else but I find this so depressing when I see just no cars I'm not like I missed the crowds and the and the traffic but I do at the same time I'm used to seeing people this is in the middle of the day on a weekday it's it's sad it makes me sad to see nobody just nobody
Inslee
lot of these comments feel very classist and racist :(
obviously lack of housing is a problem but homeless people are still people
It has nothing to do with racism lol. A city free of racism is not enough to keep a city running sweetie. There are way more issues and troubles humanity is facing other than racism. You are one of those sjws who only focus on racism and ignore everything else pretty much. Ya'll need to protest about the homeless situation for many obvious reasons. It's unsanitary, keeps visitors and tourists away, unsafe environment, crime increase, economy decline, etc etc...
Probably will be interesting or fascinating to someone who views this 75 yrs from now.
What time of day was that ? ? ? , thats not how it normally looks
Based on the shadows it looks to be sometime in the mid morning
They must've cleaned up all the trash and moved the homeless inside at the exact time you were filming. I drive downtown all the time and I've NEVER seen it that clean.
lol
Saludos muy bonito ese lugar vengan gente de todos lados bienvenida como dicen welcome a Washington state
Spokane when I was a kid was a scruffy dirty ol’ town but it had character. it’s still a dirty ol town but now it lacks character sad 😔
Why not include Browne and Division too?
I live here 😂😂
Me too lol
I do too.
Best place to live.
I havent been here long, but I love it
Same lmao
@@liciewhiteley7376 lol not really.
I lived there back in the late 80’s & early 90’s. I love the music. But for me, it doesn’t quite match the actual experience lol! You avoided downtown back then if you could because of the traffic. It’s worse now of course and all over the city. I visit often. It’s better than actually living there.
Regardless, Spokane will always be a special place.
Nice video - except the Elevator music
👍👍👍
This is Home...
My Mom hopped on the elevator at the Ridpath Hotel.. Next floor the door opened and Elvis hopped in Well.... you never know.
You should drive through deer pafk
Shit. Show it properly at least. Gotta get rush hour and concert season.

A young black man was assassinated in his home, in Spokane. The killer has not been found and for Krem and Khq this seems to not be to important.
The Dog that was killed in a fire is getting more coverage then this murder.

Hola welcome to Washington state
Stay in the car, it's a scary place to walk.
People always say that but it's the safest I've felt waking in a city. Even the sketchy parts.
I have lived here for almost 10 years and my wife and I walk Spokane Dowtown multiple times per month going to shows, shopping or lunch/dinner and I have never felt threatened or been approached by anyone in a negative way. I have lived in the Seattle Area and SF Bay Area and can't say the same for either of those.
Lol no its not. Maybe in hillyard or west central
@@jacobwhite6287 lol what? I grew up in felony flats and have been robbed more times that I care to count
@@jeremyalgood7230 "Felony Flats" is now super gentrified and called Kendal Yards. Hillyard and Brownes edition are pretty safe now as well
Live in Spokane and have all my life. Would of been nice to have seen some of the better features of Spokane? Like the water, beautiful old churches, newer updated housing areas, historical er areas, etc. Not just the downtown area. It’s a good thing they filmed this at the time of day that they did because at least we don’t have to see all the homelessness and tweaker’s!! 😂 Good job on the filming though. Great picture quality
Yes it looks great, but I drive that nearly every day, and I cannot tell you how many times I either almost got hit or a tweaker ran up on me
I fucking live here bro.
What a punk.Try learning some new words...
Ye who smells, do you smell that smell?
Well, the area north of downtown looks very poor, it's mostly everything around that looks nice. Sad minimum wage is 13.69, when we were promised $15 by 2020. and yet everything went up in prices 4 years ago. We are forced to live poorer and poorer lives.
Drive around and nothing to say? Pictures at least yours say nada.
if you go to spokane, avoid downtown lol
avoid the plaza, is what i'd say. stick to all the tourist traps, they're at least slightly safer than public transit.
@@mahorosan1 public transit is safe😂 people are terrified of homeless people and I dont know why
