As a KC-135 crew chief, we frequently escorted fighters over the ocean. They would top off their tanks about every 30 minutes, as a precaution, and fly in formation off our wingtip. Every once in a while, they would disappear, to get some privacy, to relieve themselves. I always felt sorry for the pilots being strapped into that cockpit for hours, while we were walking around, sleeping, and using the facilities on the tanker.

I have spent hundreds of hours in light aircraft. There were two items on sale in most pilot shops that are actually really useful. One is called a pilots range extender and was a funnel attached to a tube attached to a plastic bag. The other one was called Jill's john which was a special shaped plastic device attached to a tube attached to a plastic bag. They were not expensive and the newest version has a gel in the bag

    • @coldwaterhunter8176

Funny little story though. On one of my trips to the desert in a C-5 there was a port o potty strapped to a pallet at the front of the plane behind the cockpit. Two hours in to the flight, one of the pilots comes out of the cockpit to use the bathroom and steps in the port o john. About a minute later we hit some horrible turbulence and the shitter starts rocking and one of the cargo straps breaks and the whole thing pitches forward on the door. Luckily he was the only one to have used it and was only covered in his own turds and several gallons of blue goo.

There was an anecdote years ago about a particular jet, in which the software had been developed in the USA - the first time it crossed the equator on autopilot, it rolled on it's back. Equally, the early F111s had a ground effect radar which would lift up over trees etc. They had a few crashes - didn't know why, until they found that the pilots didn't trust the electronics to react quickly, so would take manual control, which couldn't react as quickly...

There is a male version of this video (but for WWII). Temp would be so cold it would freeze. Then they would jettison the “package” over Germany.

@@ronc9413 When I flew in the old SP2H (P2V7) we had PRT's (pilots relief tubes). One behind the pilots (never used) one just forward of the wing beam, (right next to my station) and one in the after station. All three had a power switch used to heat the tube if we were in freezing conditions,. Turn it on, count to ten, do your business, shut the switch off.

On long sorties...is there some sort of poo poo pack, or do you have to just hold it until you touch back down?
How about on the heavy lifters like the C5 or the B52, is there a head onboard?

And there is a medical reason too. In combat the pilot could be injured by bullets or shrapnel, and a full bladder is more likely to rupture, filling the abdomen with urine and complicating the surgery, than an empty bladder. In my time (end of 60th) the F104 Starfighter had a funnel with a rubber hose for that purpose. Only male pilots at that time. But the technicians were (literally) pissed, because they had to empty, clean and sanitize the system if used!

Yeah and if the funnel was stopped up there’s a problem. I think the plane captain or crew chief should have this on their check list to make sure the pee tube is functional. Water can be use.
