    I guess I'm showing my age. When I started my company in 1982 we had a Plumb Bob as our logo lol and still today the same logo. Thanks for the video Vince you're the man. I always use a spirit level to hang doors but Plumb Bob always for top plate bottom plates as you demonstrated and for footing foundation marks on concrete and batter boards

    I always use a level and a plumb Bob for setting door frames. "A plumb Bob never lies"
    Even though lasers and levels have come a long way they can easily get knocked out of whack. I use a laser when I'm setting a bunch of frames in a row (hallway) to align the heads but I still check each one with a 2' level.
    Call me old school but most of time my doors don't need to be adjusted.
    Everyone had their own way this is mine I'm a young old schooler lol.

    Always have a plumb bob handy, its quicker than getting the laser out the box, and of course a chalk line, which work on the same principle, are invaluable outdoors in sunlight. Plus, you can run a very long line. Handy bit of kit.

    Don’t hang/install doors with a plum bob anymore, but it’s how I was taught, back in the day. I much rather use my levels & lasers, since they’re faster.....but that doesn’t mean I don’t carry one; for those situations when ya need it(can do quite a few tasks with a speed square & plum bob)😉
    Cheers🤙🏼

    Great tip. I'm one of those old guys(50) and learned that from my Dad and Grandpa back when I was, maybe 6 years old when I "helped" build on the extension to our house. We only had 1 level between both so it was easier to use the Plum bob and a brad nail to hang it with, and a lot easier to carry around than that 3 foot level back then.

    Plumb Bobs are great...and never need calibrating! ...been around for thousands of years and always will point to the center of the earth : ) I love lasers and often use my three-plane, green laser Bosch. However, when working in bright light conditions or uneven ground or transferring an exact corner from top to bottom...there are times when it is just easier to be old school : )

    Again, I'm not a builder, I'm a communications guy, but the few times I have built walls, I did the ceiling first, and then used a plumb bob to set the bottom plate. Never did I consider putting the bottom in first and then trying to line up the top. Going forward, should I need to build a wall, I will still start at the ceiling because I can't see how starting at the floor make it easier, only harder.
    The first time I was every part of building a wall, it was with my dad and someone else at the building we had just bought for the family business. We built the wall laying and the floor and then stood it up.

    A 22 oz plumb bob works the best ,with a braided string , the green lasers a e easier to see in bright sunlight , when your framing in a 50 or more story building. Due to the curve of the earth a level and plum Bob can be off ,the higher you go the more it's off , the surveyors puts bench marks on the steel framing , all measurements are taken off their mark , I did a building in NYC 1500 feet to the Roof , from the foundation to the roof it can be off 10 plus degrees

    Tajima plumb rite magnetic plumb bob fast and accurate can’t beat it. Commercial carpenter for 25+ years. Young guys are trying to use lasers set frames and see way to many frames out of plumb and wonder why they can’t make the door work. Plumb bobs are a little slower than a laser but you will make up for it when you can walk up and swing the door the first time without shimming. Lasers are to fat of line to be accurate with. Way I do it is level the head, use a appropriate spreader for the bottom, and plumb bob the hinge side and done.

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 4 роки тому

      No. The laser thickness is just as thick as a plumb bob line, and you compensate for it in the same exact way. Lasers are more accurate than a plumb bob if you use it correctly. (Plumb bobs have errors in the hang point and errors from it needing to be held off the ground, which means you need to eyeball the line from the tip of the bob to the floor, also causing it to swing if you touch it. If you lower it to just barely touching the ground, this also introduces error.) If you don't know how to use a laser, that's operator error, not equipment error. Same goes for a plumb bob.

    • @cybernessful
      @cybernessful 9 місяців тому

      @@xenonram
      >Lasers are more accurate than a plumb bob
      Never. They are inherently less accurate. Lasers rely on tiny pendulum that is supposed to be very precisely aligned with a laser beam. Have ever heard about checking laser accuracy and calibration? I bet you did (or at should be). Have you ever heard about checking plumb bob accuracy and calibration? No, this is nonsense.
      But. Lasers are very accurate in 99% of situations.
      >bobs have errors in the hang point and errors from it needing to be held off the ground
      WTF are you talking about?! The principle is exactly same as with a laser: you measure the distance to a straight vertical line at top and at bottom.

    I always use a Plum-bob when I’m installing power poles from the ceiling onto gondolas. To me theres nothing more accurate as lasers are dependent on the top rails of the gondolas being perfectly level. Let’s face it, not a easy thing to get or keep level.

    two foot magnetic level on the head and pin the high side where she sets and shim the low side up before you drive the drive rivets in the crete; three 2 man teams set 750 doors at a casino job; use a plumb maybe once a year

    Hard to beat a plumb bob. The longer the length of line you use, the more accurate the measurement. Compared to fixed length levels.

    I went to Lowes last week and asked 2 different older men that worked in tools where the plumb bobs were and neither knew what I was talking about. I'm 42, they were 60+ working at Lowes and in tools and didn't know! 🙄

    A plumb bob I like to know how did they come up with that name but I still use one of those today I like the plumbob it's very inexpensive and very accurate it is a two-man operation because it likes to swing a little bit so but still I use it today
