Gold Recovery - Trick for filtering difficult solutions

- I figured out a new trick this weekend that greatly improves filtering of fine particles while avoiding filter paper blocking up. There are also a few tips for washing trimmed fingers at the end of the video.
That’s a good trick. It looks like it got the foils a lot cleaner than those other batches in the beaker.
Hey, yeah, that was definitely much cleaner than the beaker stuff, I think it basically just went much faster, so I got less frustrated and spent more time washing.
Nice Videos! Thx for sharing your Ideas! I use to prospect natural Gold in the creeks, but I also like computer Gold
Thanks for the comment, I wish the rivers and creeks are my area had Gold, seems like it would be an awesome day out exploring.
Great video and really great tips. I'm always looking forward to see your videos.
Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! Appreciate it.
one of the best idea i've seen so far, thanks for sharing !
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
Thanks for homee, I shall try this.... when I get my next pump, since the innards get eaten up over time and I keep killing them. But the trick I happened upon recently was that, as the filter clogs, if I carefully spoon off the filtrate from filter it unclogs and keeps working. So that scraping action exposes the filter anew which lets it do it's work over and over. It seems that the filtrate itself acts as a thicker and thicker filter until it eventually clogs.. which means I get a lot of value out of each one. This only works if the liquid I am filtering is not too corrosive where the filter turns to moosh. Cheer W
Awesome, yeah, I have tried the scraping thing, but I always seem to damage the paper!
Brilliant. I had thought of using a 600ml/min pump I have for my distallation column but the chloride would probably destroy it.
Love the bottle trick! 🤩 Thanks
Yeah, I'm actually surprised how this little pump has survived for so long. I harvested it out of a desktop medical sterilizer, so it was "steam" rated. I do run some clean water through it every now and then, but also try to avoid filtering anything warm to keep vapors down! Thanks for the comment!
Was thinking about you today. Hope you and family are safe and doing well.
Hi Mike! Long time no hear! Yeah mate, everything here going pretty much as well as can be expected with everything going on. Luckily we have a bit of space here, I really feel for my friends that live in apartments right now! All the best for you guys too mate.
Excellent tip!! Seems to good to be true!! But I've seen it with my own eyes!!
Have a GREAT Day!!!
Thanks for the comment Shane
i use the fine PP or PE mesh, which is placed underneath the two layers of filter paper. with this, the surface area widen not only around the holes in Buchner, but also to the whole surface underneath the mesh, which keeps the paper from directly touching the porcelain.
it need to be smaller than the whole diameter obviously, that the two rows of holes on the outer side of the funnel will be covered with paper properly.
spray it down with water and press the paper to the buchner with fingers (under vacuum). this could help set it up properly, so the whole area is covered and there are no leaks due to uncovered holes.
dont use mesh with very coarse holes and espetially big diameter of "fibers", as the filter papers could tear under the vacuum.
work wonderful :)
Awesome work as always mate very informative
Thanks for the comment as always Jesse.
You gave me an idea but thought I would see if you have done it yet. The idea was to use cotton instead of paper towels. If you have tried cotton would you please tell us the results.
Hi Brian, haven't tried cotton or toilet paper yet. Quite keen to try toilet paper at some point since it breaks apart more easily in water, but honestly, my results with paper towel was so successful that I will likely just keep using it!
Is the next step aqua regia? If so you could use diatomaceous earth or perlite as a filter aid. Mix the filter aid with the liquid and it provides pores for the liquid to travel in. Not a precoat, but a slurry in the raw liquid. Used this in wastewater filtration in a filter press. If the filter media is to be incinerated or dissolved then this may not work.
Hi Paul, I tried diatomaceous earth (which is what led me to trying this) and it was a total disaster. When left overnight in AR, it formed a gelatenous substance that you could literally lit with a spoon! The nice thing with doing this with paper is that it definitely doesn't interfere with the chemistry at all and it will filter out very easily at the next step. You can also dry and incinerate the whole thing as you mentioned.
Nice tip to increase surface area with the paper towel thanks
Maybe try adding more water so blades can create a fluid vortex in the blender it would definitely create a finer pulp if your just going to filter the excess water out anyway it wouldn't matter how much water you use but I wouldn't make them too small it might have the opposite effect and actually make it harder for the material to pass through
Yeah, I imagine there is definitely a sweet spot where you get maximum benefit. My intuitive guess is that it works by creating a lot of parallel paths for particles to flow, so if a particle gets trapped, there are many other paths for the fluid to take. So I guess you definitely want small pieces of paper instead of just raw fibers!
Hope you are well. Really miss your vids.
Hi Jon, thanks for the message, all good here, whole country currently in lockdown. Appreciate your message, hope you are doing well too.
@@successfulengineer , currently I'm considered an essential worker so if and when we lockdown, I will be heading to work. In the mean time I'm collecting all the gold plate pins, ram sticks, boards and everything people just throw out. Hopefully when this all done, I can get my equipment and start having some fun. Take care my friend. Wishing you and yours the best.
Try Glycolysis before the AP process. Suddenly AP doesn't need heat! The Glycolysis is just antifreeze & Lye. It dissolves epoxy, flux and clearshield. The clearshield is a spray to prevent corrosion, AKA the processes needed to recover gold. I've discovered some pcb's are fully gold coated under the solder mask or first pcb layer. Using the standard processes, got low yield. Chemically burning the pcb was magic!
Great trick, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the comment!
Love your videos. Enjoy the process and explanation of why things are done. Efficiency and possible issues explained well. I am new to looking at reclamation of all things. Watching your videos from 3 years ago to now I see a lot of process changes. Is there a forum to which these things are discussed? It seems you focus on gold but I am open to all e waste small scale (diy) solutions. Any direction would be appreciated. Again love the videos.
Hi Kyle, thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I definitely like the Gold mining aspects, and not too worried about all the other metals. Where I can I just sell off everything else. There is a forum called Goldrefiningforum which is fantastic. I'm not super active there, but read through all the new stuff at least once a week. Some really smart guys there. Feel free to ask questions if you ever get stuck, I'm always happy to help. Cheers
I watched the gold recovery from diabetic test strips. I have nearly a half million test strips from a “accucheck” master roll. If I mailed some? Could we work a deal?
Hi Kevin, I'm not doing much refining anymore, mostly focused on my engineering projects this year. Have a look on Facebook, there are a few Gold recovery / refining groups and you should be able to find someone locally who may be able to do a deal with you.
Thanks for sharing with the e-waste gold recovery community!! How many pound of finger boards u had there and yield? Thanks!
Hey Willy, from memory that was about a pound of fingers, usually I try to do a couple of pounds at a time at a minimum, but I already had some foils ready to go so I figured I might as well quickly process those and add them in. On average I always get around 4g/kg from fingers.
Hello Sir.. Nice videos. Love them.
I am planning to start an e-waste startup. Can you recommend some books. If you have a blog or email i would like to correspond with you.
Thank you.
Hello I have one kilogram of regular Intel Pentium What do you think the return should be
Hi, do you mean Intel Pentium ceramic CPU ? In that case you are looking at around 0.12g per CPU. Could be a bit more or less depending on which model it is. I hardly ever process my ceramic CPUs, over time their value seems to be far more for collectors than their Gold content.
Love your Channel.
I wonder if I can use kaliummetabisulfit to precipitat Gold out of Solution
Hi there, thanks for the comment! Yes, I believe nile red or nurdrage has a video where he uses Potassium Metabisulfite to precipitate some Gold. If you have home-brew shops in sweden, you should be able to buy Sodium Metabisulfite there. Copperas also works well as precipitant, I believe it is Iron Sulfate.
It's been a long time you don't make video you miss me. Always interesting! Did you find a another hobbies or a buisness. If you always refinning can you make a point of your process you actually do. I inspired by you to make to grind chips with the rotary machine, another machine to recovert cooper from ewaste and at the begining the twister and finally the water tunnel to recovery gold bonding wires.
I now use more and more electro refining to refine the gold pins i note that it's cheaper method with less acid.
Take care and hope you will make more videos.
Did you try to invest a small amount of bitcoin?
Hi there, thanks for your message. Yes, I have been focusing my attention in other areas since the start of this year, I have kept all the Gold I recovered over the years, so I have a nice amount sitting there now. I'm spending a bit more time on electronics development (my actual job) as well as getting out a bit more doing things like mountain biking and kayaking! Yes, I am a big fan of electrorefining and lower acid waste! Some of my best and most consistent Gold came from the pins I processed with my "Copper cell". Yes, I actually have a few bitcoin miners running at all times, have been running them for a few years now, I have a solar + diy powerwall type setup that helps offset the electricity cost. I am always around and always happy to help anyone, very nice to hear from you! Stay in touch and let me know how you progress!
Very helpful!
Thanks for the comment Mark.
Thank you so much for the tip
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Robert, appreciate it.
I am considering simply drying the fingers and then air separating in a semi-sealed container I have.
Hi David, if you get something working, definitely let me know, always keen to find better methods of doing things !
Successful Engineer yes, it is definitely the most bothersome part!!!!
hi thanks fir the tip but have you tried cheap dollar store toilet paper no blender neded just line your filter with it to the desiered filtration wet it between layers start fultering ajust filtration to your individual needs hope it helps saving some time and incase a blender isnt available
Hello again How do you deal with magnetic Pins
Hi again, magnetic pins are usually a Kovar base metal, definitely not something that I like working with! The only approach that I have taken in the past was to dissolve them straight in AR. Wish I had a better system!
@@successfulengineer Iodine/Iodide loves kovar pins
I have some Iodine sitting around, but my past experience has always been that I don't seem to be able to get all the Gold back out. Definitely need a bit more study!
MAKE MORE VIDEOS!!!!
was that to needy??😜
i was wondering where he was
Haha, thanks, I'm going to take that as a compliment! Just taken a bit of time off from the Gold while I focus on some other projects. But haven't fully given up on it. Always here happy to help wherever I can.
Do you know if smb fumse is Toxic.
Love your Channel
Hi mate, thanks for the comment, yes, the gas that is formed when HCl reacts with SMB is SO2, which is toxic. Gold precipitation must be done in a fume hood, or potentially outside if no other option is available.
Hi Again. you mentioned your face book page. I can't find your page,
Hi again Peter, I spent a little bit of time on a great Gold recovery facebook page, can't remember the exact name sorry. But facebook started cracking down on people not using their real names and I didn't really want to fully expose my identity (I think for obvious reasons), so I gave up on it.
@@successfulengineer Yes I understand that problem people had. I'm on most of the face book gold refining groups, peter williams, if you want to send me a message then we have a contact out of the public eye, I tend to keep a low profile on the groups so I do respect privacy.

Sir how recovring gold from stone with magnatic and non magnatic minrals if igrind the stone then the dold partecal r like a dest plz gide
Thanks
Sorry, I cannot be much help to you, I only ever work with recovering Gold from E-Waste
i guess you didnt do mlcc,s / silver, i dont see one, woody.
Hi Woody, no, I was always only really interested in the Gold recovery, so never had a go at Silver and Palladium from mlccs
@@successfulengineer dont blame ya, sounds like a pain for little reward.
@@spotlobac7694 Yeah, the real killer is all the Tin you have to dissolve away, never really seemed worth it to me. But then, I like the yellow stuff.
@@successfulengineer yup ! the gold stuff, iv recovered 5 oz.+ in 3 years better than nothin. steer clear of mr. covid now ya hear.
What nationality do you hold
Hi, I'm a blue-blooded kiwi (New Zealander), but came here from South Africa many years ago.
Mantap .... salam 🇮🇩🇮🇩👍👍👍
Warigud
Wtf no rus lang.. no good
You could probably follow the process just from the video, but you are welcome to ask any questions here, always happy to answer if there is anything not clear! Not sure how to do the translations through youtube.
Using natural cotton wool in a funnel with gravity filtration although slow will capture everthing
Much better.
😍
I'm really going to have to try this. I had a time consuming method for fine particles where I took a push pin or sewing needle and made tons of little holes in the paper. All the bulk would get trapped but some more fine material made it through. I then refiltered with a good filter paper with no holes. Before I filtered alot of times I let the particles settle then filter it so most of those fine particles go in at the very end. It works but it is a pain in the butt and it does appear your method would be way more efficient than what I've been doing lol. Great idea and information man I really enjoyed it.
Have you tried a coffee filter first (making pulling the while thing or easier) then filling that with ground toilet paper instead of paper towel?
BTW love the idea.
Hey mate, I have actually wondered about both your suggestions over the past few days, since the actual filter paper is not doing so much work anymore, it may be a very good idea to use a larger coffee filter, that way I could just pull the whole thing out leaving a reasonably clean funnel. I was also wondering about toilet paper vs. paper towel, the toilet paper will break apart easily in water where the paper towel holds together, will definitely give it a try.
Hello do you know the ratio Iron sulfate to gold to Precipitat AU from my Aqua Regia.
Excuse my English
Hi, sorry, I usually use SMB for precipitation, have never used Copperas, so can't help you there. If I were trying it out, I would just start with a saturated solution of the Copperas and keep adding a bit at a time until all the Gold is precipitated.
very useful when filtering silver nitrate from contact points or gold shells locked in metastannic acid
For sure, gives me a bit more confidence with stuff that I wouldn't normally even try to filter!
Where have you been? you are by far my favorite e waste refiner, and learn the most from you. hope everything is okay?
Hi Jerry, thanks for the message. Yep, still around and everything going well, I decided end of last year that I wanted to take a break for a while and focus on some other projects, mainly electronics and software type stuff. Ill see how winter here goes and might fire the mine up again! In the meantime, I'm right here if there is ever anything I can help with. And I really appreciate your comment.
Thank you
Hiya! Great videos. Have you ever explored the I + KI surface gold leech method?
Hi there, yeah, I spent a bit of time trying to get that to work, the concept seems almost too good to be true (and for me it pretty much ended up that way) I had reasonable success using Iodine to leach gold from plated scrap, but I could never recover the amounts I expected back out of the solution.
another good video as always, do you have a email or any contact info you are willing to share?
Thanks for the comment Kaisermine, I sometimes talk with viewers through email, but as you can imagine I do try to keep my email address relatively private. If it is a general recovery / refining question, feel free to ask through the comments, I try to always answer questions. For anything else, you are welcome to post post the reason and your email address and I can get in touch. (and remove the comment with your address)
Email sent Kaisermine, would love to see your equipment!
Also, either edit that comment to remove your email address or let me know if you need me to remove it.
I love this idea. It makes so much sense, it's funny that nobody has mentioned it before.
Hi Mike! Yeah, I can't believe how large the improvement is for such a simple idea, could have saved myself a lot of frustration through the years! And the nice thing is that the extra paper doesn't really interfere in any way with further processing, and it filters out relatively easily at the next step!
