We just got our first chickens a month ago. Golden Comets...we love 'em! So much easier than I thought it would be. It's still exciting to collect the eggs every day. It's also surprisingly relaxing watching our lady-hens roam, scratch and eat. Chickens are great. Thanks for posting this video. We only have four chickens to start, but you gave many helpful tips!
@@brandonfillinger3034 Its not that bad to take care of them during winter ( it does take time and 2 or 3 visits through the day to clean the litter, feed them and pet them a little), but only do it because you like chickens, not to save money on eggs at the store because you are not gonna save money :P I have a insulated coop, a heated water bowl, 2 infrared lights and a fan installed on the wall to keep the humidity out. You can buy young chicks for 13-15$ each in the spring. Most of the coop sold at the store are way to small and not for winter so you will have to build your own or pay for a custom made one. You also have to be aware of the predators in your area. You ll need to dig down to install your fences if you have foxes, minks or any meat lovers around (they can dig pretty deep to get to your chicks)...and a covered top for their outside area for falcons or eagles. I also recommend feeding wild birds away from your coop so they don't hang close by and attract wildlife or try to steal your chicken's meal.

Yes you can feed them any scraps from your garden, even onions will be fine. If you have a rooster, chances are they are fertilized. Just put them in an incubator and check them in about 14 days wiht a flashlight to see if they are developing. Thanks for watching.

After seeing my granddads little chicken coop with quite friendly egg laying chickens and getting 32 eggs from him, my mom and I are considering getting chickens and getting a coop built by my granddad and possibly other relatives. It'd save quite a bit in monthly grocery bills considering how many eggs we go through weekly haha. And the ones my granddad had were so sweet, one that was laying let me pet her. Been looking for a breed of chicken that isn't too flighty and is comfortable with people
I dont see the need for incubator if you have hens and rooster the chicken will become broody and want to set on clutch of eggs just mark the eggs or move isolated seting hen so others dont add fresh eggs that setting hen is on We kept some bantam hens for that would sub regular chicken eggs or duck, goose even turkey eggs bantam make extremely good mothers commicial when turkeys or duck soon out grow mom still try to cover them or whrn ducks and geese babies find thier first pool water and start swimming mom bantum scolding them and try to get them out of watet
Never put marbles in the chicken water dish. My chick ate the marbles and died. I saw this on some youtube, not sure which one, I watched a million. It was recommended to put marbles in the water dish to keep the chicks out. My 10 week chick ate some marbles and died. You would not think they could swallow a marble but they can. sad, I am an idiot. Don't be like me. :-(
Great video, I would add that if you want the highest egg production the pearl white Leghorn for white eggs and the red star for brown eggs have the highest production rates. Depending where you live you will have predator problems, guard dog and electric fencing of course would help a great deal. You can also get Dual Purpose chickens where you get the best egg production and meat production from the same bird, the egg production will not be as good as a leghorn or red star, the Bielefeilder is a good dual purpose and there are others.
@@SheratonParkFarms yes unfortunately I have as well I let my birds stay out all day while I was at work only to come home to see a coyote running off with one of my meat birds, I chased the coyote and got my bird back but it was already dead lesson learned.
This is my first year with leghorns. Everyday they fly out of the netting and almost every night they fly back in. If not I always find them in a nearby tree about 6-8 feet up. 🤣. But what laying machines!!
I’ve heard great things about Bielefelder chickens from PermaPasturesFarm (also here on YT) I think I may get some to replace my White Rocks and Blue Rocks that are starting to slow down egg production. This past week, I’ve only gotten 2 eggs from 24 hens. I don’t free range because they eat the tomatoes and some other plants in my vegetable gardens. I just planted about 75 strawberries for next spring too. I clip wings but there are two that habitually escape the poultry net. Once I can afford a plucker and scalder, they’re headed for the freezer. I need to re-design the chicken tractor to incorporate removable nesting boxes. I had them inside but they were an impediment to removing the tarp full of bedding. The chickens still lay eggs without the boxes, but the eggs get dirty. I’m thinking of adding two that can swing out of the way when cleaning the coop. I collect the bedding to make compost. I also want to make a way to pull it with my lawn tractor, doing it by hand is hard work at 67, especially up hills. I still get plenty of chicken manure and scratching in my gardens which are inside the fence for fall and winter.

Do you have any information about what type of maintenance is involved in raising chickens? Like do the nest boxes need to be cleaned out, and how often?

Chickens big business now , produces more money than most dividend portfolios , getting close to 12 eggs a day with my 16hens , that’s like 6 dollar return 2,190 dollars a year , I use dollar bills for a mattress now . Now to get up to 1000 chickens :) lol multi millionaire by chickens haha

We are looking to get 4 piglets soon we have a insane amount of wild hogs and coyotes here, will they harm the pigs? We’ll definitely have the electric fencing you recommend but I’m scared something will happen to them. Any suggestions?
Welcome!! Congrats on the new property. We have coyotes here and have never had a problem with them related to our pigs. No experience with the wild hogs. I'd make sure you have a good fence to keep them out and away from your domesticated pigs. Sorry I'm not more help on that. Really appreciate ya'll watching.

I had to think, how the hell do you use a horizontal file cabinet? I had to laugh at myself when I realized that you just remove the drawers and use the empty cabinet. Great idea and you can often get them for free or very cheap.
My daughter got her chick's about 10 weeks ago. They grew fast. Living outside in the pen now. I don't know what kind they are . I was wondering when they will lay eggs. Thanks

We got our chickens couple days ago. They were said to already be laying. They haven't laid the last 4 days. When you bring home adult chickens from somewhere else how long before you expect for them to start laying?

with a rooster in the mix how do you know which eggs are fertilized? can you eat eggs that have been fertilized? i would hate to crack open an egg and see a partially formed chick in my frying pan.
Hi I had the same for my watering chickens and one summer the heat had busted the hose and I had water from my well wasted all over the ground...so my advice is to burry the hose and protect it just as you would for sub freezing water pipes and also if you prepare and insulated the plumbing and maybe build a little house or put you water faucet so it is protected from the heat and cold you will not have so many problems in the future with busted pipes or freezing pipes and is well worth the effort to also protect your well or water source from damage ! And also think of ways to capture water to use on your farm as a thought through water management for your animals and property, I also like to have a small pond for wildlife and a emergency water source and fish pond for food too..is a good idea if you can manage it...good luck and happy Farming!
I have four young chickens pallets. my daughter has two homeless chickens and one rooster silky. I'm trying to get my chickens to be real friendly and there's a couple of them that lets me love on them and I just enjoy them so much but that rooster attacks me it won't let me hold a chicken it attacks my legs and it pecks my feet and I'm always in flip flops so I got holes in my feet. the man that sold her that rooster said it was a female but when I took a look at it I knew that that was a roost that is the meanest rooster I have ever been around and I have 35 chickens at one time. and I had a Long Island Red rooster and I had roosters but they never attacked me like this silky one. if you could please help me or anybody could help me do something with that rooster besides ringing his neck I would appreciate it. thank you.
I've had my chickens for over 7 months and there still not laying. I live in the north by lake superior and day light is short and I use a solar light to extend there light to no success.
I have always wanted to have chickens to lay eggs. But I have such a hard time with there being blood in the egg yolk. I know that if you don’t have roosters they won’t fertilize the eggs. But why is it that sometimes eggs have blood spots in them?

stay away from the purina feed ... my chickens don't lay eggs when I use that feed. I switched to a local feed and my my ladies started laying again.

It's hard to make money with egg layers, It's fun raising the egg birds but the margins are tough.
Agree. But it is easy for a customer to buy eggs, build trust in what we do and then come back and buy other products. Its a gateway product for us.

No. If you gather eggs every day and not leave them in the nest for the hens to sit on they are fine for weeks.

My daughter got her chick's about 10 weeks ago. They grew fast. Living outside in the pen now. I don't know what kind they are . I was wondering when they will lay eggs. Thanks

Mine still ain't laying eggs i think there stressed out don't know im just started as well but I think my rooster is stressing them out
@@SheratonParkFarms my daughter has 2 chicken laying eggs now. Blue and tan. She says it's from a blonde one and a grey one. She has 5 I believe. So they are starting to now. So about 6 months old . So neat. Especially when I saw that blue egg! 💙
Do you have any issues with roden (mice, raccon, possums) because of the feed and chicken poop?
Just starting things and figuring them out as you go is the best way to live in my opinion. Otherwise you waste so much time in contemplation
When you say the older chickens are going away,,,,do you eat them or sale them for meat?
When your baby chicks how do you know they are pullets how can you tell there's no roosters
How do you prevent the chickens from hopping the fence? My understanding was that you need a fence that's 8 ft tall.
Start them in the fence when they are young and clip their wings.
How do I know if my rooster 🐓 is old or not fértil anymore. Or in another words when do I need to replace my rooster?

Do chickens poop in their nest boxes and how frequently do you have to change out the bedding in the nest boxes?
Yes they do. If you will close the nest boxes at night so they can't sleep in them it really helps to keep them clean.

We got our chickens couple days ago. They were said to already be laying. They haven't laid the last 4 days. When you bring home adult chickens from somewhere else how long before you expect for them to start laying?
It will take a little time for them to settle in to their new home and get over the re-location stress.

This is encouraging for me to start my own chickens. How long can chickens be left alone if you travel as long as they have fresh water, shelter and food?
You can only leave the eggs in the laying box a few days at a time more than 5 they could start turning into chicks or go bad.
1 day...you will need someone to check on them while you are gone.
So how did the light work for egg production? You was getting about 24 a day.
I honestly can't tell a big difference. We may hit 26 or 27 some days but no real improvement. I think its an age issue with the chickens.

If you were gettin 5 bucks a dozen two years ago for eggs, what have you been getting LATELY!? lol Actually, I went to the grocery store today and eggs were only 3.37 for 18 ct. That's the lowest I've seen them in a while. But still, curious what you were able to get for them while the prices have been so high lately. I read a while back that the retail price of eggs was concerning because the cost of production hasn't really gone up to make them so much more expensive.

with a rooster in the mix how do you know which eggs are fertilized? can you eat eggs that have been fertilized? i would hate to crack open an egg and see a partially formed chick in my frying pan.

Hi I had the same for my watering chickens and one summer the heat had busted the hose and I had water from my well wasted all over the ground...so my advice is to burry the hose and protect it just as you would for sub freezing water pipes and also if you prepare and insulated the plumbing and maybe build a little house or put you water faucet so it is protected from the heat and cold you will not have so many problems in the future with busted pipes or freezing pipes and is well worth the effort to also protect your well or water source from damage !
And also think of ways to capture water to use on your farm as a thought through water management for your animals and property, I also like to have a small pond for wildlife and a emergency water source and fish pond for food too..is a good idea if you can manage it...good luck and happy Farming!
I have four young chickens pallets. my daughter has two homeless chickens and one rooster silky. I'm trying to get my chickens to be real friendly and there's a couple of them that lets me love on them and I just enjoy them so much but that rooster attacks me it won't let me hold a chicken it attacks my legs and it pecks my feet and I'm always in flip flops so I got holes in my feet. the man that sold her that rooster said it was a female but when I took a look at it I knew that that was a roost that is the meanest rooster I have ever been around and I have 35 chickens at one time. and I had a Long Island Red rooster and I had roosters but they never attacked me like this silky one. if you could please help me or anybody could help me do something with that rooster besides ringing his neck I would appreciate it. thank you.

I've had my chickens for over 7 months and there still not laying. I live in the north by lake superior and day light is short and I use a solar light to extend there light to no success.

I have always wanted to have chickens to lay eggs. But I have such a hard time with there being blood in the egg yolk. I know that if you don’t have roosters they won’t fertilize the eggs. But why is it that sometimes eggs have blood spots in them?
Sir hopefully your extra light comes on in the morning otherwise, the chickens are blinded when you shit off the light at night. Fyi.
