Most people may exhibit poor vocabularies when they are speaking, but may write with quite an extensive knowledge of English words. There is a common perception if one speaks with complex words one may be thought to be pretentious or snooty.
You would be surprised with the language that I use I am 65 years old and if it weren't for profanity and sarcasm I couldn't carry on with a conversation 😂
