    This is a the best video I’ve seen so far demonstrating a telescoping ladder. I’m afraid of heights so you can probably imagine how many videos I’ve watched in an attempt to ease the burden of getting onto the roof for my van build. Thanks for being so detailed and informative! The only thing left I need to watch is someone climbing up and down when the top of the ladder is at or below the roof height.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  3 роки тому

      Thanks. I am afraid of heights, too. At first, the wobble bothered me, but since it’s tied off, I feel safe.
      Larry has put it on the side of the RV, too. He should have included a piece to show that.
      You should have a ladder taller than the roof. That’s helps you get from ladder to roof.
      Is there something on the roof you can tie the ladder to? That is always best.

    Awesome video! This makes perfect sense (Cents, sorry had to say that..) on how to use a telescoping ladder with our travel trailer. We are retired and I have some balance issues at times. The ladder on our trailer is solid but going straight up on it and then climbing down it is nerve wracking!!
    Your video answered all of our questions and just made our decision for us. Thank you!

    The timing of the release of this video was perfect. I have been looking at telescoping ladders and almost "pulled the trigger" on another ladder. Now I will watch for the Xtend and Climb to go on sale. THANK YOU - it will cost me almost double the $$$, but will get what appears to be a better, safer, more reliable ladder!!

    Great video. We have one which is similar but a different model with 15 rungs so I can tie it off and still stand upright and hold onto the ladder before stepping off at the top. It goes 4 feet above the roof height. We use it for cleaning our motorhome. It was a really worthwhile purchase. We don’t take with us when we are travelling unless we are away for very long periods. Love your video and explanation 👍🏻🚐 Trev

    • @PoshcatsCamping
      @PoshcatsCamping 3 роки тому

      @@allan6021 Not sure of the make but it’s very similar to the one in the video but black plastic with aluminium. We have roof bars on our motorhome so I put a thick towel under the ladder, then use an elastic bungee tie at the top. I use a small step to put the towel in place between ladder and van. I do have to tie it tight to stop it slipping sideways but the towel helps and prevents marks on the van 👍🏻🙂

    As someone who uses these ladders on a daily basis filling overhead fuel tanks, I can not stress how nice the angled feet feature is. Most have a flat bottom and if you are on a hard surface you are relying on just the edge for stability and they tend to want to slide. The angles on models like you just reviewed put more surface area on the ground and is more stable.

    AT&T cable repair people carry a 67 lb, 28 foot extension ladder on their shoulder from the truck to the pole or cable, many times a day. I know because I was one, between the ages of 63 and 66. I hated every minute of it and was afraid of heights through it all, but I trusted my equipment and my training to stay safe. We tied our ladder to the pole or the cable and then “belted off” around them, too. I am now retired, 69, (wink to Bill and Ted) and have a travel trailer that is 11’6” tall, just high enough to be scary, for me. I also have a telescoping ladder that I climb to get above the slide to blow it off with a battery powered blower, before bringing the slide in. I do slide debris removal from the side of the slide, which is not so scary because I am still on the ladder and have something to hold. My ladder has top cap cushions that I can rotate toward the trailer to avoid scratching the trailer when climbing the ladder. I have non-marring knee pads for those times I absolutely have to get on the roof, so that I don’t have to stand up.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  3 роки тому +2

      Frank, that cable repair job does not sound fun 😂 especially if you are afraid of heights.
      I would love to downsize 😅 but too much money invested in this beast with all the lithium and solar. I’ll have to tell Larry to get some knee pads. That’s a great idea.

  • @jacktyler7599
    @jacktyler7599 3 роки тому

    You did an excellent job of reviewing the ladder and discussing ladder use, Larry. Also illustrated was yet another disadvantage of larger trailers like 5th wheels. It's that combo of overall height (which is why you need a tall ladder along the RV's side) and that crappy attached ladder which makes buying yet another accessory seem reasonable. Our attached ladder has 2" diameter stiles and steps. It's easy on the hands & feet, only 6 rungs high, and feels rock solid. Some will be very put off by the springiness of these collapsable ladders. Our smaller (and so lower) trailer only requires a 2-rung foldable step ladder for cleaning side windows and weighs ~4 pounds. But no, we are not full-timing.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  3 роки тому

      Jack, thanks for the positive comment.
      Yes. An RV that isn’t as tall would not so tall a ladder. But the major problem with RV ladders is that it doesn’t adhere to the 4 to 1 rule because it is straight up and down.
      But about the fifth wheel, I would love to downsize, but we would still want to use a ladder other than the RV one.

    When we had our Class A gasser, lots of storage, so we carried a 6' Werner A frame ladder in one of the bays. We recently moved to a DP and since it is a 35' unit, we actually have less underneath storage (due to raised rail frame) than in the gasser, so now need a telescoping ladder. Like you, been researching them a lot and think I am leaning towards the Extend & Climb 780P+, since I am on the larger side of the weight guidelines. Ohuhu, Wolfwise and Luisladders all gets good reviews, but there's just something that makes me think I should spend the extra money for he Extend and Climb. It's been about a year of use with your ladder. Are you totally satisfied with its performance and reliability?

    • @DownsizingMakesCents

      This ladder is awesome, so strong. I put it out and tie it off to the Rv ladder at every campground, that means in the last year I put it away and put it back out over 30 times, I still highly recommend spending the extra money, it’s worth it. The only problem I have is that the arthritis in my thumbs makes it a little difficult to push the buttons when putting the ladder away. If you have strong hands and thumbs you won’t have any problem at all. Larry

    Interesting! Have to get one!
    Story:
    I was laying in the bed in the 2011 Winnie Minnie and noticed a water stain coming out from the closet on the ceiling.
    I got up and looked in the closet and the ceiling was really bad so I headed up to the roof.
    I am climbing up the rvs ladder and when I got to the top as I've done for years as a towerman and "pulled" myself over the top of the ladder. You a know how it bends over and mounts to the roof?
    I was standing on the ladder and looking at the area of the leak and what do I see but where the ladder is screwed into the roof.
    I wiggled the ladder and it's loose under both screws!
    It took a few tooth picks and glue to replace the screws so they were tight and sealed the hell out of those 2 screws!

    Hello Larry and Alice!! This is really an awesome review and class!! Thank you very much for sharing your tips!
    With our new solar panel set up, something like this would be really great for reaching spots from any side of our travel trailer!! I guess my only objection to this particular ladder is the 250lb load limit. I'm a 245 lb middle linebacker. I guess I could wear some speedos so that I'd have the extra weight allowance to carry a bucket of water up to the roof to clean my solar panels hehehe
    Safe travels!!

      @@DownsizingMakesCents Hi Larry!! Thank you very much for the prompt response!
      Thank you very much for that heads up on the higher weight allowance model. I will check that out.
      A side anecdote...I had retired out of the army and was doing some contract work overseas. On my R&R sessions back home, between rotations, I'd always joke about not doing any roof maintenance or other elevated activities within 2 weeks before heading to another deployment in the event of a fall or whatever. There I was....a week before heading back overseas, and I noticed some mold on my house's north face siding. So...I broke out my 16ft ladder, which folded into a stand alone 8 ft ladder. I climbed up to the second to the top rung and fired my 2500psi pressure washer perpendicular to the ladder supports. Well...the obvious happened.....it completely shot me off the side of the ladder. Fortunately, tree bark is a popular landscape material; which I had landed in a bark bed. This is a bit different activity than whatever you'd be doing on an RV. But, the principles still apply...........don't go cheap with a lesser capable ladder!!
      Safe travels and have fun on your tail end of the RV show !

    Wow - great video! You’ve convinced me! A couple of questions:
    1) how tall is your rig? I want to be sure I’m getting the correct length collapsible ladder for our rig.
    2) seems like heavy duty velcro strips could be more easily and quickly used at the top instead of rope, and could be stronger and more secure - have you considered that? I bet you could even find a way to permanently attach some velcro straps at the top of the ladder for when you want to secure it to your RV ladder.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  3 роки тому +1

      Our rig is 13 feet 6 inches to the top of the ac, but only about 12 feet to the roof at the back, our ladder is 12 feet 6 inches which is perfect for us as we don’t need overhang at the top. I ended up keeping ropes permanently attached to the top of the ladder, just under the top rung. I would be worried that Velcro wouldn’t stay attached if I lost my balance and swung hard to one side by accident. The ropes don’t take long to tie on. If I found some good Velcro straps is would give them a try. Thanks for the idea, Larry

      Downsizing Makes Cents Thanks for the reply! I was thinking about some very strong industrial strength velcro. Very good review and recommendation. I have the 785P from when I had my sticks & bricks long ago. The ladder is excellent, the one problem I have is that it weights 38 pounds, it has a 15 1/2 feet height and I have used it plenty to clean the sides of the rig and even to cut trees that prevent me from parking or passing with my rig. I like my Little Giant. It does pack up a little bigger but it is 100 times better made, costs less than half of yours and it also can be a step ladder. It is heavier due to being built better. I ordered my camper without the rear ladder as they are crap and just more possible leak points on the roof and rear wall. Just another option. I carry mine in the back of my truck although it does easily fit in my pass thru. Those telescoping ladders seem very flimsy, flex a lot and have a lot of plastic parts to be so expensive.
