  • In Episode 110 games tend to exist somewhere on an axis between abstraction and detail, each having strengths and weaknesses, the guys discuss all of that.

Simulating being in traffic then having the urgent need to use the toilet can have humorous implications.

I play fast play, really simple war games. I spend most of my time writing and solving narrative and force movements. Some times I get a little teary eyed over a commander who bites the dust….

I think its one of the interesting points that how invested you sometimes get in a character often has very little to do with the detail of the game they're in.

Makes me think... i am the person who disables fast travel in skyrim haha, and there are so many mods that add mehanics such as eating/bathing in the sake of "immersion" I rather like these things... but a tabletop game is much harder to make immersive.....
Also v good point i think, that its harder to know what to exclude. Where to draw focus. Thats really the difficult designing bit in my head, but also what pays off the most

One of my favourite game design quotes is that travel without distance isn't travel, its just browsing. Fast travel is one of those weird elements in games that can really take the guts out of a game if not done well.
Tabletop games have advantages and disadvantages. Hobby attaches people to their forces and identifies with them more than in most digital games, and physically moving things around is inherently immersive, although they tend to cover far shorter periods of time and so reduce the immersion that can be gained from living a character's whole life.
But yes, picking focus is absolutely vital.
