Why Terraria Is So Awesome

- Why is Terraria so awesome? Terraria, the 2011 Indie title that blew the AAA gaming industry into pieces. With it's success still ongoing in 2023, it's certain that Re-Logic must have done something right that other devs can only dream to mimic. So, what is it that the AAA industry can learn? In this video, I take a look at all the pros (and some cons) that Terraria presented into the gaming industry and what other larger titles like cod, battlefield and halo can learn from. Enjoy!

Hope you enjoyed todays video folks!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this new type of content I've been releasing lately. Would you be interested in me covering more games in the future?
i like it, its good to have variety keep up the good work
put a post about it and let us chooses yes or no
You should cover items from the binding of isaac there is quite a lot of underrated weapons out there! Terraria videos are nice and all but some videos about other games would be nice.
"I'll take your entire stock!"
very much, i really think terraria needs more attention
I agree that replayability should be something that Game devs should give thoughts about more
yeah
Ya there are so many great games out there that just don't do well after the first playthrough and it's a real shame because if Devs do add dlc to those games people are more likely not to buy it because they've already lost interest in the game or have sold/returned what they have bought and replayability is a very good way to create a strong and lasting community that can get excited for your next game or future updates to existing games
Yes
I Guess this is a sign that I should watch the video of yours I skipped for this now
I completely disagree. Outer wilds is one of if not the best game of all time and you cannot play it more than once
I think the tendency for triple-A's to underdeliver in terms of polish is a result of both developer strain and increased developmental complexity compared to what came before.
Stop stalking me already!
i see this fucker commenting on every terraria video

Terraria such a gem!
Indie developers now have way better tools, and passion really shows. I think it's easier now to find indie games that have way more love put into them than AAA games. Not that AAA games cant have love put into them, just seems more rare now
Love is not profitable
Battle pases, dances, skins and all that crap is
Is a SINGLEplayer game starts to get bloated with skins and whatever you may aswell not play it at all (you can tey it before paying tho)
cough cough EA Sports cough cough you suck cough cough
Indie games have always had more love put into them, but no offense they looked like shit almost all the time 10-15+ years ago
Love the replay ability of this game, I can have multiple characters all different classes, with multiple styles of weapons to have a new fresh experience everytime
Terraria isn’t going to die because of the changing industry, it’ll change cuz the playerbase stops gaming. The playerbase is aging. Kids aren’t playing it cuz it’s not actually relevant, it’s just that the people who played terraria as kids have had reasons to keep playing and haven’t left yet
100% agreed
Who is this grain character
To be fair, there are still younger folks picking it up, like me for example, got it for my... 13th Birthday? Only 15 now, and it hasn't gone anywhere.
@@amog8202 What I mean is is that it's not a trending game. Every game that's still alive has new people going into it but it's not a trend, it's a very small number, probably less than 100 a year. From what I'm seeing, most people who play terraria have some level of nostalgia. Most new sales are going to be returning players rather than new ones (not that I'd expect terraria to have many new sales, just a decent size pre-existing community). Currently all the kids are flocking to games like fortnite, fall guys, among us and minecraft but terraria is no longer a game that is trending in their friend groups. As someone who teaches kids mostly age 8-14 I can tell u that they don't shut up about video games but terraria is never one I hear mentioned.
@@UA-camCommonman_Totas I am merely a figment of your imagination.
I think the biggest difference and reason terraria is what it is can be found in the latest update name. To Re-Logic Terraria is “a labor of love” something made with the passion and creativity of a small team. Contrast this with AAA studios who, while may having passion of their own, are made by giant teams to fill a quota, even if they have love for their product they still need to be able to cooperate, and make money. So they simply aren’t allowed the freedom needed to make a passionate project with so much oversight
R.I.P Leinfours, you will be missed
perfect timing to show Terraria all the love it deserves, with leinfors recent passing. rest in peace legend
Nothing better than another great video from sock in the new chapter of sockrteez.
I’ve been playing Terraria since 2014. I started out on mobile, switched to Xbox 360 in 2016, and now I’ve been playing on PC since 2019. As long as ReLogic keeps updating the game I don’t plan to stop playing it anytime soon. It is one of my all time favorites.
You said it well - greed. It's greed that makes games bad - the time for development is shortened, the game isn't polished and has many problems, but people still would buy it.
Makes me appreciate Re-Logic more!
Rip Jason at relogic who died in his sleep recently. He was always so wholesome and optimistic. I hope the new quality assurance role they hire will be as great as Jason.
have you heard about the staff member who died? Jason. Rest in peace brother.
Yep heard about it yesterday :( tragic news. He was such a great guy
@@sockrteez he really was he did so much for the community. it was too soon.
Terreria do be using all my triple A batteries.
keep in mind that terraria is in the top 10 best selling games of all time, despite only costing 10 dollars. it has beat something like animal crossing: new horizons which is both insanely popular AND costs 6 times as much
When you realize that Vampire Survivors has more player count than Battlefield 2042 says something.
The main thing I think the gaming industry needs is to stop being an industry. We, as gamers, need to put more collective thought into indie games. These giant companies like Bethesda, Sony, and especially Activision, while they can make great games, are really just in it for the money. We get the exact same game every time a new COD comes out. Games like Valorant or ForkKnife have micro transactions. You know what games don’t? Terraria, Minceraft, Subnautica, and all these other great games. Indie developers are the spice of life.
I think a key thing about terraria and why it has lived so long is because it is such a good base template to be worked upon for updates and mods because it does not take its self very seriously anything can happen in terraria I mean like you can build a npc house out of poo
First character in Terraria I used EVERYTHING, I always had the most powerful summon, I'd switch to whips to get that bonus damage with them but I also liked to use Bows to apply debuffs and guns to get big DPS with Chlorophyte Bullets and the Terrablade was my go to when I was mining or Dungeon crawling. My armor though was really only ever whatever had the highest defense numbers, which usually meant Melee armor. It's still amazing, even after all these years.
Because of greed in the gaming industry, I feel like gaming as a general topic will have to die out before we see a major change in the industry, but once that happens game developers will definitely look to indies like Terraria and communal success games like Elden Ring to find the things you talked about in the video and work on them, definitely starting with either replayability or generally finishing the games.
im new to the channel and you made me get back into playing Terraria! and im honestly surprised you don't have 1m+ subscribers. The commentary and the editing is great.
Welcome aboard!

Another great thing I feel ReLogic does great is the modding scene. Rather than discouraging it, Terraria embraced it, and even hired a modder or two to work on Journey's End! I even see that Redigit, the lead developer of Terraria, often retweets major posts about Calamity's updates. The soundtrack in some of these mods is amazing too, with DM DOKURO arguably changing the quality of music in modding forever. I'm so proud of where this game and it's mods have come, and even when the community dies, I feel like I'll still be coming back for a playthrough or two in the future.
Yeah Terraria is honestly one of the most mod friendly games ever, its great
idk, it may be just like 1.4, as of the game never actually dying, but diminishing, and than Terraria 2 or 1.5 uptade comes and it gets to live again.
DM Dokuro unironically made one of the best soundtracks in gaming history for a MOD, he's a legend
Another great vid sock also congrats on 100k
Very high quality videos recently! Keep them coming
Glad you like them!
@@sockrteez always a joy to see an unwatched video of yours on my recommended
Rest in peace Leinfors
I'm just gonna comment here because it's 12am and I can only finish watching this in the morning lmao, but i know this video will be another good one
I have 5k+ hours in this game over the past 3~ years. Though I played it when it was still in 1.2 console version at a friend's house who had it in the past. The nostalgia of playing it back then got me to think about getting the game again but on pc to finish something a started. I tell people I am a gamer, but only for Terraria. :) As I really only have a passion for this one game. Thank you Re-Logic!
Not sure if re logic is going to be active due to a tragic passing of a developer. May he rest in peace.
They technically did release free" dlc" in the form of the official tmod loader, but calling it that is a HUUUGE stretch
bro's got the hair of Olympus
Something that makes games really fun and funny for me is just some random joke items like a whoopee cushion, an explosive bunny, or the companion cube pet.
I absolutely love this video, I have always enjoyed documentary styled content and combining it with one of my all time favourite games feels so good to watch. Thanks for dedicating your time to this banger of a video :D
Awesome, thank you!
Np thanks for replying 👍
Extremely sleek editing and endless content on my favorite game. Sub easily earned, keep it up
I love indie games because my laptop can't run triple-A games
I thought the video was really good, I just wanted to say that I thought the music was a tad too loud and it was sometimes hard to make out what you were saying- maybe just an issue from my phone, but I'd like the background music mix to be a little quieter in the future. Again, loving this direction in your content lately, keep it up!
Bro got that Don't starve fade 💀
But seriously, cool vid 👍
The voice really fits your face
Unrelated but lets take a moment of silence for lienfor rip what an excellent dev
1:01 I love how bros pants just dissapeared
As someone played terraria its the best indie game I ever seen but its problem that it became boring after completing game 2 or 3 times
why is this guy actually so good
Sockerteez has covered every weapon. That is why his face has appeared.
I just beat terraria for the first time playing mage and I’m so excited to replay it and finding new weapons that i never bothered for from another class!
Terraria and Elden ring are the only two games that I have completed countless times. They are both amazing games with a plethora of ways to play them. Also the more knowledge you have of them the easier it gets and it is fun to test yourself with challenges once you’ve mastered the game
If im going to guess you play the mods aswell?
@@Seroperato Nah but I want to. I play console
Also terraria adding tmodloader as a DLC is also kept it alive with the mods giving new content
Bro would look like mega mind when painted blue and bald💀
Remember Terraria has a mod that feels like a AAA game being Calamity
3:33 I have a bit over 3000 hours on this game (modded included) and I still discover new things about this game but just randomly deciding to look at an item on the wiki, like only 2 days ago did i figure out you can put Quest Fish on weapon racks
It's the small things that keep me playing this game
My god you've grown so fast! I remember you first starting with shorts haha
I’m not gonna lie I’d play the shit out of a terraria style mmo.
I really should play calamity mod but I never get around to it
I'd say that Terraria, nowadays, is a AAA game from an indie studio that successfully maintains its soul as an indie title
New video yes!
amazing video. i hope this blows up.
please do make more content like this alongside your current videos :)
i dont know if its just me, but i kind of feel like terraria has been slightly rising in popularity recently, ive been seeing more people play terraria for the first time on youtube
Mods extend the playtime of Terraria by like 15x and they're still growing.
I feel the need to point out, terraria help its modding community and now there are some insane mods whereas aaa games heavily discourage modding cause they then cant charge people for it
Terraria is truly the game of all time
Can we have a comparison of what the best old ones army sentry is??
Terraria actually endorsed a moddable version of their game that a 3rd party had been working on as a passion product... it's called tModloader and you can get it on steam for free if you already have terraria... it even has steam workshop support
I dont think I've ever seen any company do this other than Re-Logic
If they made Terraria Otherworld a DLC, I think we would all buy it.
Only way Terraria will lose its spot in the top 10 is because there aren't that many people who don't own it anymore
Nice vid bro
I think plenty of content being missable works in the game’s favor as discovering something new each play through of from a community video allows for more mystery, I remember finding a truffle worm and being so confused what it was for after have quite a few run away back in the day, only to be shocked that it led to a boss more powerful than golem.
Moments of curiosity really get the imagination up and running and it is great for new players, for us veterans it allows for checklists and challenges as we know what event will drop a certain item for a build, or that this boss is optional and doesn’t drop anything important so we can skip it if we feel like it.
Not just that but a boss or event may not drop a useful item for a mage play though but maybe something essential for a melee play through. Allowing for different ways to get to the same goal.
"Boss more powerful than Golem"
Is still technically premech for some ungodly reason
In terms of relevancy online (not like that matters when discussing the quality of a game), Terraria modded videos, Terraria playthroughs but with some catch or gimmick, they’re getting crazy views all things considered. Terraria’s online presence was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller in 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 and even 1.4. The game has had a crazy not even resurgence but blowup in the past few years, and while people on UA-cam Reddit general online Anglosphere act like or literally think doesn’t exist, the Chinese online gaming community (largest in the world in case that needed explaining), has had quite the infatuation with Terraria in a similar timeframe.
So modded content continues to get mad views, and in a few years we should be seeing some pretty fantastic mods coming in from the Chinese playerbase (look at Dota2 mods for reference), I expect a very good intermediate-long term outlook for Terraria. By the time it’s kicking 15 16 years old there will be a level of playerbase only matched by Minecraft Dota2 League of Legends and Warcraft 3 in terms of similarly old or older title’s playerbase. That battlefield comparison is hilariously unfair, and Terraria will almost undoubtedly outlive that title in long term popularity
Terraria is built with passion, love and it is a fresh, unique game with multiple fun aspects,
Terraria is simply a good game and it was made for people to enjoy, not sell
Terraria will always hold a special place in my heart
Also Terraria and Minecraft sponsoring each other increased the fanbase by a lot
I think the main appeal of terraria is the progression system and how non-linear it is. You can start the game as a melee tank and end it as a glass cannon mage.
the bosses are also for the most part well designed and fun to fight, and as the game progresses the player and content tend to race to out-scale each other until the very end.
Glad to see a Besiege cameo!
only just started the video but already man got drip
I think Terraria modding is almost on its next level
I think the most important differnece is the passion of the devs. Triple A games are designed to be profitable before anything else. But terraria, minecraft, undertale/deltarune etc. have some of the most passionate developers out there and it shows
The problem with triple a games is their incentive is money, terraria is so good because the incentive was a fun game they all wanted to enjoy. Its tragic but expected that the gaming industry makes its money like any other business, making crap as cheap as you can and selling it for as high a markup as you can.
Best games of my childhood were minecraft, terraria, hollow knight and undertale. None of those are triple A, its honestly sad how little recognition indie games get compared to "bigger titles"
As a longtime minecraft player
microsoft singlehandedly repulsed me from the game. As a result, I choose terraria, and I'm here to stay.
Hello Mr Sockrteez,
If you are still doing the weapon review series I'd like you to check out the 'psycho knife' from the "solar eclipse event" or the "Pumpkin moon event"(I didn't remember which one it was) Plz and thanks.
Solar eclipse, drops from the psycho ( obviously )
I'm pretty sure that idnies are gonna be the main thing people are looking for because of how there's 5 good AAA games that in a long ass time
This guy is such a great narrator. Also the hair is awesome bro. Keep up the great work!!
Let me just make a fighting game with a free season pass consisting of 999 items that let you choose every 3 spots between one of three items of a set that loop until you got all of them.
Imo the replayability is rly what keeps these titles floating steadily.
I haven't played Terraria for like a year and now here I am, back at it to have my fun with it.
Being able to just come back to something at any point and starting fresh in case you're rusty without necessarily needing to erase what you've already achieved is amazing.
And while the hype and community may not be constant, this fandom is tightly knit while filled to the brim with a variety of incredible people.
What I thought you might mention too is the modding capability, especially since you dragged Minecraft into the conversation.
The fact you can just go "fuck it" and casually add something to the game if you have the given knowledge is great. This birthed TModLoader and CurseForge which both are by just being a thing a great example how far a game can go when you let your community tinker with it too.
A good vanilla game is already a wonderful experience but modding quite literally tends to push the game to the next level.
From QoL changes to basically reworking the game in several ways, modding has something for everyone and everything.
I would add one more thing.... MODS! To instal and play Terraria mods is extremely easy thanks to support of devs and tModloader and amount of well made content mods that are constantly updated is huge.
I think relogic needs to start creating a terraria 2 if they want terraria to remain relevant and lets be honest if terraria 2 was announced pre order sales would go through the roof and it would also be great for the creators because they wouldn’t be held down by the current terraria’s old engine and the current bosses and such and they could hopefully expand on more interesting ideas
RIP LEINFORS
Terraria is real magic
Those are some nice transitions bruv
Personally I just wish more game devs would take more time to give us a completed product and for AAA companies to treat their game devs better, granted this is something I don't exactly know very much about but I have heard horror stories of absolutely horrendous working conditions for the game devs of big releases. However, for the greedy aspect of AAA game companies, I think the real answer to that is for people to speak with their wallets, which is probably not going to happen as easily as we wish because of how dedicated fans can get to the product being fed to them that they will just blindly throw their money at it, regardless of whether or not its worth it.
I dont necessarily think a small online community means terraria is dying out, I think that it is harder to make terraria content because of the same progression often taking place
Which is why the modded scene is a lot bigger than vanilla
here before 150k, surprising, seems like a great dude
Good video, but I thought the thumbnail said INDIE > AHHHH
Not a bad video but insane to say Terraria wouldn't have worked if it released now, while everyone is waiting for huge projects like Terraria 2 and Starlight River. It's decline in popularity is because it's been on it's "last update" for a couple of years now and players have already experienced the content a dozen times. We almost can't imagine an indie scene at this point where Terraria didn't exist, because the impact its had is so staggering.
I have been playing since 1.2, and will keep playing until long after I beat the game. No, I haven't beaten it yet, but I did get the slime staff!
Why do you sound like a professional in this category?
Bro ran out of post-plantera weapons 😂
Bro looks like he's using the rtx eye lock ai
Good video
Why is he comparing massive multiplayer competive shooters
To a phenomenal and fun sand box 2d game
There completely different games
I feel like one of the biggest reasons why Terraria is still standing today is because of its infinite scale of mods unlike Minecraft. You can find literally anything in there. Minecraft couldnt really succeed with mods, people would get bored after a while, but Terraria is a whole another case.
Other game publishers only want to make money, Relogic just wanted to make a game they would have fun playing.
The player control is the key, minecraft, FNaF or terraria as mentioned all have a massive and very loyal fan base because instead of getting milked to death they got to modify and enjoy the game they love for all these years without big problems
imagine if Microsoft hunted down minecraft mod packs
or Scott copyrighted all the FNaF animations and fan games
or re-logic interfered with the modding community
there is a reason that Bethesda is missing every mark after Skyrim that was 12 years ago, and still has one of the biggest and most loyal fan bases of modders and RPG lovers waiting for the smallest drop of Elder Scrolls or fallout content or even straight up making them themselves (looking at Oblivion remake)
We need a video on that hair routine
