    Amen, don't run negative to battery terminal for just the reason he stated. Without a negative fuse it would burn up your radio

    It would be nice if this device turned on when a call came in, I couldn't find much in the settings, there is only the screen light on and off

    I'm still learning mine. I got the frequencies I think I'll be using most programmed in. The unlocking instructions were easy to find, if you haven't found them already. I just need to install a fender mount for the antenna so there is less concern for the quad band antenna hitting something and breaking. I haven't been able to find a quad band antenna with a spring and the spring loaded, friction fit antennas won't hold up to Interstate speeds.

      That is awesome! Glad to hear another station is on the air.
      So many antenna options. Most mobile options are quite rigid. I watch more for the drive thru and garage doors. Recommend looking at least a 5 inch mag for those larger antennas

      @@jimsspareparts I'm going with the lip mount on the edge of the windshield cowl. That will about put it in line with the OEM radio antenna and drop the height so that antenna strikes are much less likely but yet provide enough clearance over the cab that signal reduction should be minimal. At least the plan and theory. Time will tell if I'm right or not. Ha Ha!

    Hi Jim, great video, I am getting this radio next week. I was wondering if you can recommend a good antenna about 35 to 40” long for my to mount it in my truck. Thank you.

      We have been experimenting with this antenna. It supposed to be a match for this radio. I'm finding on Chevy full-size with a lip mount It has a hard time, I would say get the diamond version. But I did work fine on a Dodge. So like always purchase at your own risk, each application will vary, This is just an example of what I have used with them. And don't forget to leave the car door close. It will detune it with it being open (extra hour trying to figure that one out).

    Anyone run into the troubles of using MS Windows based PC’s with Chirp Software, that when you plug in your TYT TH9800 cable from radio to computer, all of a sudden your computer and radio stop shaking hands?
    They won’t shake hands, and they certainly won’t talk to each other.
    It all locks up when you try to perform a radio frequencies update, change radio settings with Chirp. Save. Then try to send the new updates to your radio?
    you may see various error messages when attempting to proceed. “NAKed back” is a very real error message for the broken software.
    It stems from Windows suddenly thinking your FTDI computer cable with chip embed, is a phoney bootleg.
    For whatever reason Windows plays “Karen”, it can be a bear to diagnose exactly WHAT windows did to totally disable the process. It IS a driver issue.
    There’s a good degree of documentation about it online that may assist you in diagnosis and treatment.
    Good luck!

      A 12vdc power supply. Depending on your supply demands a 30amp would do everything if you are getting into ham radio. That radio pulls maybe 3 amps at transmit. So you could get a smaller one. Your call. Thanks for watching!

    If you have a "bad ground on the vehicle... it" Will use radio to "pass current" means what? lol Never heard anything like this and not sure what you mean... if nothing else is connected to the radio's negative except the negative battery terminal how could the radio serve as a ground path for other devices? lol
    In a properly functioning electrical system, the negative terminal of the battery is typically used as the ground reference point for all electrical components. The negative wire of the radio can be connected directly to the negative terminal of the battery or fuse box, providing a proper ground connection for the radio.

    • @jimsspareparts
      @jimsspareparts  Рік тому

      If you have a bad chassis ground on the vehicle and you connect direct to the battery. Vehicle will have no problems attempting to use your radio to fill the void. Most vehicles are “not” properly functioning electrical. Especially if you live in the rust belt. This may not happen in all cases.
      You hook it up as you wish. I suggest going to the body for ground. But I only speak for my equipment.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @trondyne3513
      @trondyne3513 Рік тому

      @@jimsspareparts Ok but I don't get what you mean... "Fill the void" is not electrical speak... When you say ground through the radio what is the current draw from and what is the exact path to ground you refer to? Some random device can't ground through the radio's positive and the neg is only connected to the battery... :/

    • @FunctionalWC
      @FunctionalWC Рік тому

      If the ground of the radio is not connected to anything other than the battery, there wouldn't be a specific "shared electrical pathway" involving other components. In that case, the radio's ground would be limited to the battery's negative terminal, and the radio's electrical currents would circulate through its internal circuits without involving other components.
      Without a proper chassis ground or connections to other conductive surfaces, the radio's electrical currents wouldn't have a designated path to interact with other components in the vehicle. Therefore, the notion of other components becoming part of a shared electrical pathway wouldn't apply in this context.@@jimsspareparts

      In the dinosaur era, mics were metallic.
      It was not uncommon to hear of operators getting physically burned and severely shocked with a badly/improperly grounded radio attempting to do what electricity does… Pass from origin to ground (literally).
      If unable to take the path of least resistance with the radio being functionally fully “grounded”to pass large bursts of amperage/voltage=wattage, it woorks a little harder. It arcs, or jumps over, under, around and sometimes through things to do what it must do.
      Hence it jumps over to your lips, or your hand.
      You become the path.

    • @arthurziegler6021

      If the cable and connectors from battery negative are corroded or loose there will be a voltage developed from battery negative to chassis when the starter is engaged. It can be as little as 1-2 volts. But that small voltage is imposed across the radio from negative power lead to antenna ground. Radios don't like that.

      They are used in the DTMF pad. Non programmable buttons. Sorry I was thinking the P buttons. If you were to key the mic and push A-D it would transmit the DTMF for it.

    Guys, you americans from USA do live in the best place in the world to afford genuine tranceivers like Icom,Yaesu and kenwood and yet buy these chinese stuff. Me being from Brazil struggle a lot to get any of those great rigs, I don't understand, sorry.
    Nice vídeo though, thanks for posting.

      We like to experiment and the major manufacturers don’t always allow for stuff we like to do. There is a good bit of “Chinese” radios that are pretty decent. $600+ for a radio is a bit much for anymore.

      I understand now... I am about to buy a TYT TH 9800 mainly because of the airband (my great passion) and one of my concerns is that the audio quality on this one is kind of muffled. I have also an old but still great IC-A110, IC-A6, 746PRO and IC-R10. I was looking for a genuine yaesu but it is hard to find and of course, expensive. Best regards from Cesar PU7SPK.

      Always feel free to ask questions. The tyt 9800 is an very nice radio. And the air band receive I absolutely love. Best feature is having it with AM. The audio does have some issues. I put a good external speaker on it and sounds so good. The audio sampling is not perfect. You can’t change the other channel while listening with or knocking out the whole audio output. Now if we could get a cheaper version of c4fm or icom DV that would be awesome.

      There's one tranceiver that i am looking (it is like a dream!) for but unfortunately yaesu used to stop producing. The great FT-7250! Front firing loudspeaker, clear loud and crispy output audio, what a delight. Have a look on this radio here on UA-cam. And please, i would like to know if we can listen to two airband frequecies at the same time on tyt 9800 as well as if we have banks of memory.
      Thank you!
