- Remembering WLEE 1480 AM is a nostalgic look-back at one of Richmond’s all time most popular AM radio stations. The documentary traces the station's history from its sign-on in 1948 to its final sign-off in 1989.
Featured interviews include deejays who manned the 1480 microphone from 1960 to 1987 along with listeners who recall the station’s impact on their lives.

I didn't know about the rich history of WLEE. I worked for Southern Broadcasting in the mid 70's. The same company that owned WRVA. I worked for sister station in Phoenix, AZ AM 55 KOY. Thanks for sharing this fun and informative documentary about WLEE
Thanks for commenting, John. Those were golden days for AM radio!
Hi there. This is Randy Scott, WLEE alum and producer of this documentary. LEE was near the intersection of Horsepen & Broad. The studio building sat where there is now a Marriot Hotel. Across from what is now the Burlington Coat store where the Carousel dept. store used to be.
Really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing.
Yes it was I worked at life of Virginia and always looked over and saw those three or four radio tower sitting there. As a matter of fact I remember when they took them down or reduced them.
In a city like Richmond, often the radio stations had a lot deepr reach into the rural areas than Television in the day

RIP Shane-Brother-Shane. You were one of a kind!
So sorry to hear of Shane's passing
I love this video. My hometown. I was born in 1965. So, I grew up listening WLEE 1973-1981. Worked there at WLEE in late August 1982-'86. (Big Band Format).
Thanks for commenting Carter. Those were golden days for AM radio!
“The City of the Monuments”…RIP 2018

🚲 These are the type of videos that I look for. The ones that make me feel like I'm twelve years old again. Great hearing these voices of my youth again.

Is this the same Dave Skinner that owned Skinner & Company Advertising? I used to shoot car dealership commercials for him when I worked at WATE-TV in Knoxville in the early '90s.
Yes, that's him!
Sounds like WABC, NY in the 1960’s to mid-1970’s, with Cousin Brucie. You could go to the beach on a crowded summer Saturday and if you forgot your radio, it didn’t really matter!

And the Chief engineer, Tom Kida turned out to be the uncle of one of the guys in my local Ham radio club here in NJ..@@randyscott7877
Ad Astra Shane.
I was a teenager growing up in Buffalo and listened to Shane nearly everyday. What an original powerhouse!
I loved hearing the clip of him on this documentary.

Love seeing Kirby Carmichael after all these years. I was a marketing executive for WRVQ in 1988 and 1989 when Kirby was doing evenings
That was such a better time. Our culture has turned to crap. ☹️
Completely agree Richard. Thanks for commenting. Those were golden days for AM radio!
1380 KGLD St. Louis was born November 1979 thrrough September 1989 which they were bought out by KLOU 103.3 FM an oldies station at that time. Now what made KGLD a dynamic station for a decade was the station played music from the 50's to early 60's. My mom let me use her old AM radio. You would not believe what magic poured out of that tiny speaker to a 12 year old in 1979. From that time on the oldies kept me dreaming on those lonely nights through the early to mid 80's. Doo Wop was their primary and Pop was second. To make this short the best station since KMOX a few decades before. Anyone interested in more history just ask me here. I am now going on 53 and the songs I remember then are no clearer than they were when the first hit the airwaves of Love back then. Biggest songs they played were All In The Game Tommy Edwards, Shes Not A Bad Girl Smokey Robinson from 1959. My dad lived this era and remembered it well. Sadly he passed in 2013 at the age of 75. I dont have the I remember that when I play these songs on an old computer in the early mid 2000,s. Time has passed but these songs live on like yesterday. Somethings are meant to last a lifetime even though we do not.

My name is joey and I listened to WRVA radio from 1972 until it stoped playing music in 1993. Today is Friday June 12 at 1214am.
Wow, a Rich Landrum sighting. One of the early announcers of Wrestling on Channel 6 back in the 70s. There's a clip on here of him interviewing Big Cat Ernie Ladd, Big John Studd, and Nature Boy Ric Flair at one time.
@comunity idea stations? is there any chance of finally adding the older local documentrues like a tale of two cities the circuit city story and hi there horror movie fans the bowman body documentry, seeing as y'all did have the world broadcast airings of all of them
As a kid, we lived in Richmond from 1972-75 and I listened to WLEE and remember it very well. While Q94 was already playing a more rock-heavy version of Top 40, I still preferred WLEE. Better personality, better musical variety. Besides, AM was all I had in my room anyhow.
