I used myq for the first 7 months with our model Y. It sounds great, and when it works it is - but it has some annoying quirks some of which are just due to the added complexity of doing this stuff over the internet. About a month ago I looked at my garage door opener clicker sitting collecting dust and decided to try it again. I’ve realized it’s just easier to use that but YMMV
I prefer the Homelink option that came with my Model 3. Not only is there no subscription, Homelink will still work if my home's internet goes out after a storm or some other ISP outage.
Yup... the only issue is, now Homelink is a $300 or so post-delivery HW option only (no longer included!), for EACH car, so... if you don't already have HomeLink in your car (eg any new Tesla), this is a way to get same or better functionality, for cheaper (at least 10yrs, is same price.) One thing might be smarter (haven't tried), is.. MyQ *knows* the garage door state. So, unlike Homelink, if you come home and door is ALREADY open (wife, whatever)... it won't then CLOSE it as you approach. It should be smart. Homelink first-time setup, was also a bit finicky for me.. open the frunk for better signal, try multiple options, etc... of course that is one and done, but..
@@michaelsmithers4900 eh -- depends on the opener -- mine has a battery backup that will open and close the door even with no power in the home, so worth it for me.
Last thing I need is another subscription! Removed my Tesla Homelink module before trade in (that I originally paid $300 for) and brought it to my new Model Y. Easy to program through the gateway and works just fine. No subscription! Getting really tired of monthly FEES.
Glad you upgraded into a home for raising your kids. You won't feel like a stranger owning a Tesla in your subdivision. More and more family's are acquiring Tesla's. Very good nine-minute ad.
I already had the myQ hub in my garage connected to an original LiftMaster garage door opener. I can't tell you how many times it has saved us from driving back to the house to check to see if we closed the garage door. LOL I literally bought the myQ Hub just for that convenience! I was also dreading the $350 upgrade to buy the LiftMaster option on my new 2023 TeslaM3SR. Plus having Tesla coming out to do the install. Then I ran across this option. Best decision I ever made. Garage door opens when I drive up. The garage door closes when I leave. Nothing to do or touch. It's all automatic. Love it!! Thank you for the video!!
When I received my Tesla model 3 February 20, 2019, the Tesla delivery woman assisted me in connecting my spaceship which she named it for me to my garage and community gate. It was available then did not cost me anyting. she just connected it to my spaceship and she did it for me in 5 minutes. and I was able to come to the gate and the gate opens right away and my garage garage opens and I park inside in the garage. When I moved all the way from California to Florida in 2021 to a New House I connected it to my garbage opener. I have been using this function for 4 and half years and love it.
Hmm, my 2019 M3 came with the homelink garage door opener included. But I see it is now a $350 option through the Tesla shop and requires a service center visit.
Hmm, my 2015 ford came with heated seats and remote start. But I see BMW charges customers $18 a month for heated seats and $10 a month for remote start. BMW is the king of add on charges.
WOW, you're kidding me! I got a plaid so I haven't really considered how many of its features are nonstandard options on more base models. Still doesn't feel right to charge so much for it. Seems like it's basically just a garage remote built into the car.
I got basically the same benefit from Homelink, which works out of the box with pretty much any garage door that has a wireless remote. I choose to manually close my garage door, but even Homelink supports closing the door as you leave for the day. I do use the auto open functionality, which is quite nice. MyQ sounds better if you want complete peace of mind, though -- it looks like it 100% knows whether your garage door is open or closed. Homelink just blasts your remote's code on command (or as you're coming/going) and may or may not actually reach the opener. I do agree that it makes quite a difference, though. Particularly on the Model X, the visor situation is...limited....so I don't really have anywhere to place a remote. Regardless, if your vehicle supports it (my Jeep has Homelink as well), it's well worth setting up. Most people just see the screen button (in the case of the Tesla) or the batch of buttons on the roof (in the case of most other cars) and never really bother with them.
There is also one special option of MyQ where when you a summoning the car out of your garage it will open the garage door before proceeding with moving the car out of the garage. Sweet!
Thanks, Andy. Had to replace our garage door opener, so made sure the one from Home Depot was myQ compatible. Used your 10 % off the lowest price. Sometimes it disconnects, so I hit the included regular remote and when I get back home, I drive under the unit and reconnect. Opens when we approach home our driveway for both our Teslas and closes when we drive off in either Tesla. We have connected the opener to our 2013 Town and Country in the traditional way, so we are running 3 cars on the new opener and paying one yearly fee. It also comes with a keypad for the edge of the garage, outside. I had not had this feature before, but I like it in case I am working outside and want to go in the closed garage, I just use the keypad. Great suggestion, thanks, Andy.
It's a nice idea and my garage is so equipped. However, before replacing my opener, I had already had my remote mounted and, since there is an ongoing fee, decided my equipment was already excellent. The regular included remote control opener mounts nicely, and invisibly, on the back of the screen (Model Y) at the bottom with stick on Velcro. Since a button must be pressed anyway, it works essentially the same. MyQ will, I think, be able to open automatically as one approaches however, I still am fine with the more nuanced/absolute control of a button.
I agree and to take it one step further, depending where one lives there may be that time where you may not want to automatically open your garage due to a safety concern albeit rare.
Thanks for sharing as always. Got MyQ garage opener since it came out. Nevertheless I have been happy with it. But to pay extra service to open/close my garage is something I will never do. I just place my phone on my Tesla M3 charger and click. Plus MyQ will send a notification within a minute when garage is left open. Love that you can open/close the garage no matter what part of the world you’re in. Another benefit of MyQ is the Amazon key, package can be left inside the garage and prevent thieves.
I have 2 Teslas with the Homelink hardware as the myQ option wasn’t available when purchased. I will caution anyone who has 2 vehicles with the automatic garage door proximity opening feature. If you and your spouse are both approaching your garage, the first car will start opening the door and the second will start closing it as it approaches. Be sure you are careful or you will have a close encounter with your garage door. I don’t know if the myQ technology is better but the Homelink “activates” the door upon departure and arrival as opposed to specifically closing and opening respectively.
I had HomeLink installed on my 2018 Model 3 -- no-cost-upgrade when I ordered my car -- and it is fantastic. Opens the garage door when I approach, closes it when I depart. I can't do that remotely but it's so convenient to have it built into the car. My new 2023 Model 3 doesn't have HomeLink though, because it's a $350 option now so I thought I'd just use the remote for the garage door. I've only had my new M3 for six days and I do miss the automatic nature HomeLink offered. I had convinced myself I'd pony up for HomeLink when I saw this video. Nice! I am checking out the free MyQ unit right now. Edited to add: Tesla MyQ does require a subscription. I am not convinced of its value now. I would only use the open-when-leaving and open-when-arriving feature anyway, and HomeLink does that well. Bad reviews of the MyQ app and operation are many and fierce on the app download page, so I think it's a no-go.
In my 2018 Tesla model 3 this feature was free with FSD. When I upgrade to a 2022 model Y, I refu6to pay for this feature when I can just use the app or clicker. All other electric car owners in the world offer this for free when you pair your garage door opener with the clickers built into the car.
MyQ is great, but $45 a year isn’t. If you have added a 3rd party slide-back tray to your console, it makes a perfect vertical surface to use a Velcro strip to mount your garage opener. The opener is hidden when you close the console cover, and it’s in a convenient spot for when you need it.
I have a MyQ connected to my 25 year old Genie opener and it works very well. I don't use the service because I live in a condo complex and want to see my garage door before opening it. It is also helpful to remotely check if the door is open or closed. I have my door/gate remote velcroed to the back of the monitor. I bought the MyQ to answer the question, Did we close the garage door?
My wife’s Honda came with hands-free link installed and works just fine. I don’t need MyQ to pick my pocket every month. And I refuse to pay Tesla $350 to install the garage door opener that should’ve come with my Model Y to begin with.
I have a MyQ garage opener but the remote opener is much more convenient. I taped it with velcro under the console cover. No one can see it's there. TBH, I would like to have it integrated on the screen too.
lol. Never seen your channel before. This video was recommended to me and after seeing the title, I took the bait. Ain’t no way I am paying to connect my Tesla to MyQ. My Tesla already automatically opens and closes my garage door. And if it fails, I use the MyQ app on my iPhone to close my garage for free. And I use that same free app to set my garage door to close 30 minutes after I leave for work, just in case I forget to manually close it, after the Tesla car sometimes fails to close it. Paying for Tesla to MyQ connectivity is a complete waste of money.
Andy how does the door service work when you get in the car and ready to leave the garage? Do you have to physically press the button from your screen to open the door when the car is already in the garage? Not sure how geofencing would be able to work when the car in parked inside.
Not sure about Andy, but I press the internal garage door opener, right beside the door to the house, to open the garage door as I move into my M3. That's easier than using an app, MyQ or otherwise.
I had one but sent it back once I realized there WAS a cost to using it. Yes, it's pennies a day if bought in bulk, but lack of upfront pricing to use it once installed was to me a bit of bait and switch---not exactly transparent. That, plus on principle, if I buy hardware, I don't want to further pay subscription fees to use it when for the money, I'm not supporting an infrastructure but supporting their ongoing profits. Buying the Tesla HomeLink, while not cheap, is a once bought, you own it for the life of the car, and it requires no future payments to keep it working. Plus, it moves when you move easily. One could find the breakeven point between the HomeLink and MyQ subscription, and eventually the HomeLink will cost less in the long run.
Hello Andy. Don’t have a Tesla yet. Probably will not get one since I am retired and 70 years old and drive about 60 miles a week. Question on your garage. It looks insulated, do you have a HVAC vent 9x3 inches or so in your garage? My brother lives in Ohio and when he finally got a attached garage he had a HVAC vent plum in and it keeps his garage cool in the hot summers and a comfortable 50 degrees or better during the winter when it 20 degrees outside
@@aslye Andy, you don't need MyQ for that feature. You can tell your Teslas to auto-fold at home (or any other location). When you leave that location, the mirrors unfold once again. I do this at my regular car wash spot too. Edited to add: If you fold the mirrors at a location, Tesla asks if you want to auto-fold here from now on. Easy.
Isn't your m3 a 2018? Didn't the garage door opener come installed from factory in the car? I think they stopped in 2019. Another way is to use voice commands through your phone. Easier than opening the app and no need for the subscription.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t! Very frustrating to sit in the driveway watching the the little green waves while nothing happens! It usually works on the second or third try. I think the wifi is battling with the cellular connection for internet access and that is causing the problem, but I really don’t know.
We need myq for tesla to also work to turn on outside lights as you enter your driveway (great for night time) , unlock mudroom door and disarm alarm. When leaving, mudroom door locks and arm system asks you because there may be others inside the house. (tap on screen). Please update and provide this awesome feature and I will subscribe for a decade.
Hello, thank you for providing such good information. I bought a model Y 3 months ago and absolutely love it. I would like to know if it is possible to run CarPlay parallel to the software on the Y. I understand that for road trips the software that comes with the car is best to prepare the vehicle for charging. But I miss my real time data for the daily driving with Waze. Please advise. Thank you.
My 2018 has Homelink which works in the same way once you connect with your old remote. No cost. Why did Tesla switch away from that!?! Now for my new Tesla, I have to use MyQ and pay😤
I've used the MyQ feature for a year now and it works 95% of the time when it does not it's not your fault the commands from the Tesla have to be routed through the manufacturer of MyQ and they are down a lot - at least once a week So when you drive off and think the garage door will close 95% of the time it will it's that pesky 5% that has your garage door wide open all day long inviting folks to empty your garage
On another subject... I know the car looks nice without a license plate on the front... but this could get you a ticket or at the very least a fixit ticket which can be a real hassle too. Red light cameras and also police cars are scanning plates for cars reported stolen, and if a cop noticed you didn't have one on the front.... who knows? nothing ? or a ticket? Good Luck.
Some states require license plates on front and rear. Kentucky isn't one of them. Neither is Indiana, where I live. Ohio, next door, uses both plates. So all of us one-plate drivers are just fine no matter where we go.
Tesla doesn't charge for installation if you buy HomeLink from them. Usually a Ranger comes out to do it, and he will pair the hardware to your opener for good measure.
What are the contingency protocols in case the company goes bust or is bought and the product is discontinued? It would be a shame if you cannot get in or out of the garage in case the service is shut down. Wouldn't be the first time a cloud service suddenly disappears leaving all hardware sitting dead.
If you visit this page and scroll down to where it says "New to myQ" and you should be able to proceed to sign up and get the email for the free hub www.myq.com/auto/tesla
What do I miss ? You buy something ... to have to subscribe (and so : pay even more) to use it. And after 10 years, you can either throw it in the dustbin or stop using it... It must be me ...🤯
The link provided ends up with too many redirects and dead ends. After 15 minutes of attempting this Ii decided the hassle of trying to purchase with your link provided was a good indication this would be a bad experience and decided to pass.
Congrats on the new home. I'm sure you're turning it into the ultimate smart home already. Question, do you have two EV chargers in your garage or one? And did you have to have the EV chargers installed when you moved? How much did that cost ?
Thanks! I only have one EV charger in my garage. My wife's Model Y usually just charges on a normal outlet with the mobile connector. My Wallbox EV charger was installed by Mr Electric, but they installed it for free as part of my partnership with them.
I tried signing into Myq. When I tried to place the order they do not recognize my address in NV. I left them a message on what to do next. Also your code did not work for me. Hopefully they will contact me. I also tried calling but the # given which is 12 numbers. Obviously not a usable # in the states.
Just to let you know Andy I was finally able to order the smart garage control I will need. Still could not get your coupon code to work. Maybe after trying so many times it just did not recognize a code. No worries. I will let you how it all works out. Thank you. This system will really help me!
@@aslye No it didn’t. Their site is not real user friendly to begin with. But I am very grateful to you for telling me about myQ. Keep up the great videos.
I have a MyQ compatible opener, the myq app on my phone, and I had the free trial subscription on my Model Y. I ended up not subscribing. I just keep the button remote in the center console. Open the console and push. That's it. Door goes up or down. When I'm not in the car i use the app. Not worth a monthly subscription. It sounds like it's worth it to Andy, but not for me.
It's funny how MyQ is sponsoring all of these UA-camrs to get Tesla owners to basically subscribe to a $10 monthly subscription 🙈. Do you really need to pay $10 a month to open your garage 😂🙈. MyQ dont even have an apple or google app. Thanks, but no thanks!
Subscription! Subscription! Subscription! Isn’t that why you bought MyQ in the first place. Something that didn’t have subscription? You got reeled in at the end. Lol. But yea it’s good value for 2 cars. Better to buy the tesla software directly for one car.
Early on in the video (1:53) you said no paid subscription was required which was why I watched the rest of the video. As it turned out, a paid subscription is required. Ooops. I tried MyQ, as soon as it was available on my Tesla. The MyQ hub has a horribly weak WiFi radio and couldn't connect in my garage. My Tesla can, my Nexx garage opener can (all the features but no sub), and several security cams that are even farther away can. It is junk and I returned it. I have a nephew in Idaho that has two openers with MyQ built in. He uses it and pays the subscription. I wish Tesla had selected a generic approach or better a better hardware to support. Nexx is cheaper, I have used it for years and no sub. I can tell my phone to open or close the door (I don't use the geofencing option) via Alexa or Google without having to touch the screen.
The whole video I am going Hmmmm hmmmmm...... 2018 tesla has homelink....why not just use that for free... I have the same car 2018 LR 3 with home link and a My Q actual door opener , I disabled my home link when my Q came out on the tesla and was to say the least not impressed at all with my q on the tesla.. it would sometimes not shut the door when driving off and open the door at the incorrect time, way worse then just using the free good old radio controled homelink.... So why would i pay a subscription for something that works not as good?

Great video Andy, looks like you now have space to park one of my rental Cybertrucks, we should talk when I am in town later this month!
Does my Q automatic unfold mirror when you leave? How did you set it up?
Yes it auto folds when arriving and auto unfolds when leaving. The options are under the MyQ settings in the Tesla touchscreen
Easy.
only thing that doesn't work well for me is auto close when i leave the house...not sure if this can be fix?
Thank you.
Nice looking opener.
My 2018 has Homelink which works in the same way once you connect with your old remote. No cost. Why did Tesla switch away from that!?! Now for my new Tesla, I have to use MyQ and pay😤
I've used the MyQ feature for a year now and it works 95% of the time
when it does not it's not your fault
the commands from the Tesla have to be routed through the manufacturer of MyQ
and they are down a lot - at least once a week
So when you drive off and think the garage door will close
95% of the time it will
it's that pesky 5% that has your garage door wide open all day long
inviting folks to empty your garage
Do you live in a high-crime neighborhood?
@@donaldstinnett5630 No but kids are kids
On another subject... I know the car looks nice without a license plate on the front... but this could get you a ticket or at the very least a fixit ticket which can be a real hassle too. Red light cameras and also police cars are scanning plates for cars reported stolen, and if a cop noticed you didn't have one on the front.... who knows? nothing ? or a ticket? Good Luck.
Some states require license plates on front and rear. Kentucky isn't one of them. Neither is Indiana, where I live. Ohio, next door, uses both plates. So all of us one-plate drivers are just fine no matter where we go.
I believe that 31 states requires only one license plate Kentucky is one them where Andy lives.
Didn't your 2018 already have the Homelink hardware? So why not just use that instead of going the myQ route?
Thank you for sharing. Regards
How much does Tesla charge to install their garage opener? I thought that'd be good if you are keeping for over 10+ years.
I'd say, take the MyQ controller off the garage door opener, delete the app, and return to using the remote controls which came with the opener.
I managed to activate the free trial but I cant find the promo code to purchase the control hub. I'm from Canada btw.
If you visit this page and scroll down to where it says "New to myQ" and you should be able to proceed to sign up and get the email for the free hub www.myq.com/auto/tesla
@@aslye i did signup and got the welcome email but no coupon code anywhere.

What if you don’t have a Tesla but would like the app and features for your existing garage remote.
MyQ isn't limited to Teslas. Non-Tesla owners would use the app exclusively, unless the car also had a MyQ application built-in.
I have a question off topic.... which color tesla do you prefer, red or white ,?
I wish they didn't charge this premium to use MyQ. I just stuck my clicker inside the console, under the sliding door
I have myQ which I use for my phone. But the monthly cost to connect to the Tesla was not worth it.
Hey sorry to hear. I’m going to message the brand and see what’s up. Did you try code ANDY10? Did it ever work?
@@aslye No it didn’t. Their site is not real user friendly to begin with. But I am very grateful to you for telling me about myQ. Keep up the great videos.
I have a MyQ compatible opener, the myq app on my phone, and I had the free trial subscription on my Model Y. I ended up not subscribing. I just keep the button remote in the center console. Open the console and push. That's it. Door goes up or down. When I'm not in the car i use the app. Not worth a monthly subscription. It sounds like it's worth it to Andy, but not for me.
Way too expensive! It should be $100 lifetime subscription. I opted for the Tesla Garage opener for $250 for the lifetime of the car
imagine thinking you have to pay to not deal with opening your own garage.......
I prefer Homelink.
Awesome content.
I just use Apples HomeKit
I can tell my phone to open or close the door (I don't use the geofencing option) via Alexa or Google without having to touch the screen.
the idea is now a subscription to open my garage... ???? Very poor idea for a video Andy
Is this how lazy people have become to click a button
One extra step to automation.
Can see Tesla drop you off and and then go park itself
I'll still keep a cheap remote because I'm cheap
This is an infomercial! Maybe the last name of the creator should have given me a clue! - tacky, I know, but true. LOL
Yay commercials🎉
Get some sleep Andy.......
