I Lost My Pack on a Solo River Trip!! | Kayak Camping the Petawawa River - Ep 2

  • In Episode 2 of my solo trip down the Petawawa River, I have the biggest day of whitewater to contend with, including a number of sections that are considered 'unrunnable'. This is why I brought the kayak instead of a canoe into Algonquin Park - to give me the opportunity to run whitewater that I would surely need to portage with a canoe. The question is, how many rapids can I actually run paddling alone with a kayak that is loaded with 100lbs of gear??
    Hope you enjoy this second part of my Petawawa River adventure. Here are links to the other episodes from this trip:

    Another awesome one, Ken. Well done. again, thank you for sharing it with us.
    Seeing that bag in the background floating as you kept going, literally had me going "Oh sh*t!" and then your reactions, both in the commentary and when you discovered it was gone, but not gone far, had me in tears of laughter. That's the kinda sh*t that would and does happen to me in all aspects of life lmao! Cannot wait til the next episode!

    That moment of realisation "OMG, where is my bag!" LOL.
    My dry bag has two straps with those carabiner style spring loaded clips on them. I always clip it to the deck bungee or some other thing attached to the boat, as well as using the bungee itself to hold it down. Then if it does get knocked out there is a secondary fastening so it should just get dragged along behind.

      I wouldn't actually want the bag attached to my kayak in whitewater. It could easily have messed with my strokes/braces/roll, and caused bigger problems for me in the middle of that rapid.

    Hey Ken, I’m pretty new to Kayaking, my wonderful Wife purchased one for me, for my 60th Birthday on the 4th August 2024 (yep, a couple of days ago) and I have been binge watching lots of your videos, to learn tips. I live on a Narrowboat and love the peace and quiet. Now I have a Kayak and I’ve found and subscribed to your channel, I’m in a very happy place in my life.

    I know it took a lot of discipline to portage some of those rapids, but being a solo kayaker with a fully loaded boat, you made the right decision.

    • @jacobnieves7728

      I think stuff like this is great, seeing paddlers with decades of experience skip rapids should hopefully remind less experienced folks that sometimes the best move is to portage and move on.

      @@jacobnieves7728 it's also a reminder to us seasoned paddlers that you have to consider all of the factors of the situation before running a rapid. There are times when a rapid that would normally be no problem, should be portaged.

  • @arcanum3000
    @arcanum3000 2 місяці тому

    Finally got around to watching this. I was surprised when you said your satcom is in your big main dry bag. As an emergency communications tool, I'd think you'd want it more readily accessible, particularly in a situation where you get separated from some or all of your gear. Assuming you're using the Zoleo, it seems like it should be safe to keep it in e.g. a PFD pocket?

  • @vandall0160
    @vandall0160 2 місяці тому

    I am now thinking of mailing you my rabbits foot so you can recharge it! Turned around to look at the camera and noticing the dry bag was super lucky, as traveling back up stream only to find your dry bag in an eddy (usually on the other side of the river) can be taxing on a multi day trip. Looked like great runs on CII-III+'s and is a great difference between the yak and a canoe being able to skip the portages.
    Fishing many rivers here at home that have CIII runs, usually on a sit on top, I have lost more gear than I will ever admit and own enough light carabiners and leashes to hold everything I own to the boat, so usually losing hats, shirts, shoes, and those items that end up on the floor, my clothes bag is like gold for there is nothing better at the end of the day than to slide into dry gear, the river Gods were definitely looking out for you!

    Some of them wrappeds looked very wild but you managed to get some great video footage. I like the way the that even at your skill level you put safety first.
    Do you know this may be the first video you have made where you say a bad word 😮 just as you look back to check the back camera mount and realise your dry bags gone lol.
    I have to ask did somebody come out and bring you another camera. Because I'm part 1 you lost your front camera or did you just have a backup.
    Awesome video again can't wait for part 3

One can do without dry clothes, without toiletpaper (that's in fact the less important piece of equipment, I even don't carry it on my trips) and without satelite phone. But it certainly can break the moral and take out the joy!

    As always, I really enjoyed your video. Your one of my go-to channels for kayaking knowledge and entertainment. Have you ever checked out the Bonafide RVR 119? It is a sit-on-top river fishing kayak that I use for my kayak camping. I have taken it threw lite class 3's and it handled great. When I need to scout something ahead, I just stand up in the kayak. It makes trips like that a lot easier. Every kayak has its place and I think the RVR would have been a good one for that trip. Again, love your content and keep it up. Thanks.
