  • I know this is a heavy subject and it might be a little scary to think about. The truth is... I WANT to scare you. I want you to know how serious it is to lose your period due to over exercising and under eating.
Obviously, this is a subject I am super passionate about. Losing my period made me realize how important my fertility was to my identity, and I think it's something that should be talked about more. Just know I am here for you ❤️

Female fertility is not only about kids. It's about hormones. Hormones affect literally everything: acne, skin tightness, mental health, bone density. Literally EVERYTHING!!!

I see a lot of people considering being infertile a good thing in the comments, but the process of losing this bodily function is not at all a healthy way to get there. Periods are not just for having children but also to regulate multiple hormones in the female body that contribute to the tightness of skin, bone density and muscle loss. Not only that but hormones that regulate mood and mental health such as dopamine and serotonin decrease significantly because the body is malnurished. Periods are important even if they are annoying.
Edit: Why are so many of you trying to defend eating disorders I- 😭
Edit 2: I'm not telling anyone to get pregnant oml 😑 please just take care of yourselves and get birth control instead of an eating disorder
Edit 3: ....... Does my comment have anything to do with her saying "the joy of a being a woman" anywhere except for this edit? No? Wow, its almost like I don't care what she said and just trying to help people 😯. If you have a problem with the creator of the video's wording then please comment it somewhere else. I'm not promoting "misogyny" (quite the opposite really) so please, stop and think about what I'm saying instead of directing your anger towards a stranger ✋️

Thank you for saying this! I feel like most of the comments you are seeing are mostly just trying to convey that the joy of being a woman is NOT purely the ability to bear children. The message in this video is very important, but was unfortunately lost to many over her slightly unaware comment regarding fertility

Sorry this was comment from the other one i just want other to read that it is important to have period. The joy of being a woman is to be healthy and taking care of your body.
i think many people misunderstand what she meant. Having period doesn't mean having kids is what makes you a woman or the reason to be a woman. Having regular period is a sign of good health. Please do not twist what she meant. Yes to those who wants kids it is what makes them have joy. But unless you yourself have decided you do not want kids then fine don't have one. But but what she meant is those who over working out is happy of not having period, but that is not anyone should be happy about. It is a sign that despite being fit, when a woman suddenly stops having period that person is not healthy physically. You do know not having period or having irregular period means you have underlying health conditions.
Yeah i know i am saying things repeatedly. because people are twisting what she means. Suddenly lossing period is not normal, it is nothing to be ignored. do not ignore things happening in your body. I was 21 when i had hysterectomy, because i had a Cyst on my ovaries. It was spreading to my uterus. Since i had my period at 13 years old, no one said having regular period is important. by 16 years old i always had irregular period, my menstrual pain stopped. i was active on my daily life, little did i know by age of 18 i had this growing cyst on my ovaries. Having no uterus and ovaries to make me have my period, means i have to depend on hormone pills and treatments. And this i can tell you those meds do not give you the real hormones your body needs. Do not think so little of what she said, she is right and people should think properly what to say before judging her.

@@ChiYuki44 all very good points, and I’m very sorry to hear about your experience, that sounds tough and I hope you’re doing alright! Unfortunately the implications of this video send all the wrong messages, especially impacting the people who are deeply hurt or affected by their periods. Many people who menstruate, who also have depression, often experience an almost painful and extreme depressive episode during their period, which makes them despise it deeply. Not only that, but there are trans men and non-binary people who get dysphoric about their period. As well as a large number of people who insist they do not want children, however society keeps dismissing them by saying that childbirth is the greatest joy of the world, and they’ll change their mind later, or regret not having kids.
Now, I am not at all saying that her message was that the ‘joy of womanhood is having a period and being fertile and the stinky doctors keep hiding it from us >:(‘ however, it is completely valid to be upset with her wording. Not only is it invalidating to the many trans men and NBs who still have periods to call a period ‘the joys of being a woman’, it could cause them even more dysphoria, and make them try to potentially risk their health to get rid of their period in an unhealthy way. Not to mention saying something in a way that makes it seem like ALL doctors try to hide that your period going away is a bad thing, which is a gross over-generalization, especially offensive to doctors who also have periods and know their importance. This is why it is important to word things this vital in an informative manner, that way you don’t risk the potential of sending the wrong message or causing more harm to people who deeply despise their period. I know her heart was 100% in the right place, and I agree with her, however I don’t think it’s unreasonable that people interpreted it wrong, nor did they take what she said out of context, they were simply confused or hurt over their interpretation of what she implied because the optics were off

As a woman with PCOS an who doesn't have a period, I understand her pain and fear. A lot of people want to comment about the "joys of being a woman" part but they're missing the point of what she's sharing. She's just saying it sucks that we lose our choice over something like this and that there's not tons of awareness about it. Whether you want kids is up to you but it's nice to have a choice rather than have it taken away. And also not having a period can be nice, but it comes with a lot of nasty side effects. Please stop bashing her for raising awareness. Sure her word choice could've been better, but I'm sure you all can see what she really meant by her words and actions over the years.

I didn't know that I was pushing my body over the limits. It terrified me when she said that not having periods means you go infertile. I *want* kids, and as much of a pain periods can be, I finally know that they are absolutely necessary to get my own personal joy.

If you watched this and the only message you heard was "being a woman means you have to be able to conceive" I don't know what to tell you
My interpretation: child bearing and fertility is so fundamental to what women are (it's certainly not everything), losing it just to become fitter is deeply unnatural and very _very_ unhealthy. There's other reasons one might want to lose ones fertility but if it's just for aesthetics and to prove you can get your fat % that low... you're hurting yourself so badly that your body can't do one of the very first functions we evolved. If you want to be a body builder and are fine with taking the risks, then knock yourself out because it’s your body and you have the right to. Never let anybody make you feel like a reproduction machine and tell you you need to center your entire life around creating it. Of course many woman dream of having kids and that’s great, but let’s not talk like that’s a woman’s only purpose.

Infertile women have always been made feel less of a woman by people who think that being a woman is just having children and I think it is valid to oppose a concept that has been used to hurt them. I think that we should stop normalizing the idea that being a woman is only having your period and having children, of course there is nothing wrong with wanting to have children but the whole idea of womanhood shouldn't be based on something that only some wome can experience. Yup but something you should keep in mind is too not work out more than 6 days a week and don’t train the same body part more than 2 separate occasions per week. Also try and fit your training within 2 hours and take around 1-3 minutes rest between sets. If you follow these guidelines it’s pretty much impossible to overwork yourself.

This is completely true and it's so important that people learn about this. My doctor's response to learning that i lost my period was NOT good, she said that "many women athletes lose their period" and at the time, that felt like a badge of honor. In reality, your body is shutting down organs because there isn't enough energy to make them all function. That's kinda scary. I'm better now, and i no longer have an eating disorder. But this is real and people need to know 💙

i understand the "period being a woman's joy" part being controversial, but I am very glad you brought this topic up. I haven't had my period for 3 months but I didn't understand what was wrong. But because you warned me about this, I'm trying to eat more and workout less. Society always pushes girls to be skinny, but they don't tell you about the dangers of it. I kinda lost my period, but it's not like I have a six pack. I just lost 2 kg in one month and now my period is gone. If you are ever thinking of going on a diet, be sure to check if you really need it.
    !!!UPDATE!!!
I GOT MY PERIOD BACK!!! After 6 months I finally got my period back. I also gained 4kg, but thats ok because i'm much more healthy than before I started working out. Thank you for all the positive comments! love you guys!!!

Or getting it a couple times a year for 2 or 3 days. It’s still really hard for me every month now when I get it and it last me a full week. I still have a very unhealthy mindset on periods and as someone who doesn’t want kids, I still don’t see it as a joy. It feels like a burden and it’s a painful time of month for reasons beyond cramping and wearing what essentially feels like a diaper for seven days. I know my mindset is unhealthy and I know I have lots of recovering to do, but I definitely think her word choice could’ve been better especially when talking specifically about eating disorders. I also had Amenorrhea at 16, I didnt have a period for a year and a half, and it is nothing to scoff at. Not ovulating without outside sources such as birth control causes problems with hormones, such as low estrogen which not only has terrible short term effects, but very dangerous long term heart and health consequences as well. It also can worsen PCOS and Endometriosis symptoms tenfold.
Endometriosis has for the most part taken my life and I have found some relief through multiple surgeries and hormone therapy. But I would never ever tell someone to continue this lifestyle if it's affecting their cycle this drastically.

She clearly didn't mean that having children is the only joy of being a woman but rather just the joys of being healthy. I'm not entirely sure I want kids but for me having my period is an indication that all my hormones are working properly and if they aren't working I don't just lose my period, you can have skin problems, hair problems, digestion problems, issues with mental health. Losing your period is a more straightforward way of measuring whether those important female hormones are working or not.
Edit: Having children is A joy of being female. You can't take that away, it's literally biology. Females are born with the reproductive organs to have children in literally every species. That doesn't mean it is the ONLY joy of being a woman and if you're infertile you're not a woman, but if it wasn't a joy why would infertile women struggle so much with it? By saying it isn't a joy at all is almost invalidating their pain, acting like not being able to have children shouldn't be something to be crying about anyway.

Like yes, some woman do care a ton about having kids, but a lot of us don't care about that, we care about following our dreams and doing the best for ourselves. Now I will admit, there are some health issues that come with losing your period and that's why I find this a problem, but don't say woman can't be joyful cause they can't give birth. There are also some women who naturally develop infertility over time and those who are just born without the ability to reproduce so it just kinda sounds like she's saying people who aren't fertile because of just how they are, are less of a woman because they can't give birth.

This happened to me last year, I'm a pretty short girl(149cm) that's why I've always tried to keep my body on the skinnier side, otherwise I'd look like a muffin. But one day my aunt told me I looked like I was getting fat and because of that remark it triggered my insecurities and I hated how I looked. Mind you I was completely healthy weighing in at 43kg, but because I let that stupid remark get to me I started hating myself and worked my ass off to lose the pounds. I remembered getting to the point where I counted my calories, eating at a maximum of 1000 calories, doing 300 squats, 250 push ups and did cardio for 3hrs straight, every single day. I lost my period about 2 months in, weighing at 40kg by that time I couldn't stop, it was like I was consumed by this obsession in losing weight that I failed to notice my period loss, my sunken eyes, and my ribcage showing on my chest and back- at this point I weighed in at the lowest I'd ever been, 36kg. From the begnning of my obsession to the lowest of my weight, I had missed 7 periods and I only stopped when my mom, heartbroken, begged me to stop after I finally told her about the periods that I'd skipped. I had to get therapy after that and now I'm fortunate to say that I've completely recovered🙂. Idk if anyone will read this but I'm just sharing my experience to show other women what really happens to our bodies when we care for it too much. And I hope that you will take care of your body the right way and not like what I did to mine.

@@tvisha7572 well, for me atleast, the first step to recovery was to recognize that what I was doing to my body was not ok. I think mindset is the key towards any goal, cuz at first I started off just overeating, trying to gain back the pounds, but my mind was in the wrong place, I gained the weight but quickly exercised it all off because again I was too paranoid about getting fat, so really the first thing u need to do is to set your mind straight. Know that what you're planning on doing isn't to get fat, what you're planning to do is to heal your body, to recover from the stress you put it in. Once you've got your mind set, the road to recovery will come naturally.

It's been over a decade now since I stopped swimming, my periods are still irregular and unproductive, because although I ovulate, they won't embed. Your point about the dangers of losing your period is completely valid. However please don't make it seem as though joy for women is entirely based on fertility alone. For some, fertility/pregnancy isn't a matter of joy in particular, but merely a means of reproduction. For others it's not a necessity in life at all. One can choose to not have kids and still be considered as much of a woman as others are.
As someone in the comments said already, menstruation isn't a definition of the joy of being a woman at all, if anything it's merely pain that many of us would love to get rid of if health complications could be avoided.
