The one thing I'll give Wertham is that by 1948 comic strip reprints probably no longer made up the majority of comic books. Beyond that though I think Capp did a good job of illustrating the difference between correlation and causation.

I'm glad that Dr. Wertham was able to end juvenile delinquency in the mid 20th century. Al Capp did a great job showing the absurdity of this man.

And the morons who make up the evangelical right are STILL blaming comic books and video games and horror movies when a kid breaks laws. Those pathetic buffoons will look for any scapegoat to divert from society's REAL problems. It's easier for lazy, self-righteous parents to point fingers than it is to be an actual parent.

Yeah Capp and Lennon, than Capp and the Goldie Hawn and Grace Kelly accusations. That's why we don't here about Li'l Abner no more.

😎Hey Alex , my bell notification hasn't been working right. I've heard both episodes with Dr Wertham ; this one entitled : The Schmoo and the previous one entitled The Comics : Not So Funny. Al Capp creator of my #1 favorite comic strip Li'l Abner as well as Abbie & Slats (Raeburn Van Buren artist) and Long Sam (Bob Lubbers artist). Despite being a Capp fan I did and still do agree with the Dr. There was a documentary done sometime in the 1970s that had merchants or their survivors talking about strong arm comic book / magazine sales practices such as the Dr mentions. Capp states that syndicates censored comic strips which isn't really true if one looks at the creators he speaks of such as Milton Caniff who offered plenty of not so subtle sexiness among other things and Chic Young with Blondie sleeping in the same bed as Dagwood on many Sunday pages. We all know that DC , Marvel , Charlton and others had criminal interactions which in certain cases carried over into the content of material published. There's a book entitled Pulp Empire which goes into the history of government involvement with comic books that manufactured racism among other sordid activities. 😎Hoping my bell works for your next episode Alex ; I'll just keep checking the channel each week😄!

Wortham may have won the battle against the comic books but he would never lose the war against the internet

Alex 😃 Wow, very interesting and entertaining exchange, although it makes me curious as to what the actual facts are underlying the opposing arguments! Al Capp came across as very likable!👍

He did which is interesting because his famous exchange with John Lennon almost twenty years later has a very different legacy.

This was great! Thanks. Wortham really had his head up his rear on this subject. Objectively wrong on every count. Just nonsense pseudo-psychology & non stop virtue signaling with NO basis in fact. You can tell it was all about the grandstanding and moral pontificating for him. Just another quack catering to lazy parents looking for a quick and easy scapegoat.

Oh really? Is that why they and every other comics publisher have dropped the Comics Code?
It's a sweet and fitting irony that the CCA seal is only being used by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund these days.

I wonder what Wertham would think about tucker wanting to raw dog the green M&Ms just because she was in high heels? He knows a thing or two about sexual deviants & that's about as sick as you can get.
