Exactly what I was thinking. Hard work mean great results. What a wonderful adventure. I noticed the end column behind you on the porch looks like it is splitting in several places or is that how it develops. Hope so. ❤
I'm from Canada but live in the Acores Portugal. I don't understand why you are skimming Gyp rock or gypsum board we just directly paint it in Canada after pulling the joints with a large flat trowel and tape what you have or paper tape. Your work would go a lot faster as you just sand the joints flat using special sand paper for gypsum board that I have seen at leroy merlin. Perhaps there is a reason you are doing it this way but you will have enormous sanding to do. No criticism just an observation . Good luck whatever you do.
Maybe add DATE's on video's, because it looks like you are planting plants at end of August, or did you actually do that ? Also, why no "Raised flowerbeds" ?
I think you've missed the point of "tapered Edge boared". The point is that you don't need to plaster the whole wall. Square edged board however you do (Sorry). Also I think you were using "self adhesive tape", you apply that to the joint first, then mud it then sand it, finished. Then just paint. 😊
Hi Andrea, here are some tips from a professional plasterer. I am Canadian, but I work in the UK, so I have experience with plaster and skimming compound. You were right to note that the material you are using is nothing like multi finish. Multi finish is a gypsum plaster, and has to be put on in two back to back coats, over about 3 hours. It's flattened gradually as it firms up, and then rendered very smooth when it is almost dry by flicking water on it and troweling tightly with a finishing trowel. This is standard usage in the UK. What you are using is skimming/jointing compound, which is the standard in Canada. Your first coat should be just thick enough to cover the backing material. Let it dry thoroughly, then sand it aggressively (not with sanding discs in your hand 😊) with a wide, flat sanding pad. Then apply a very thin second coat. The second coat is meant only to fill in the gaps and hollows left from the first coat. There should be almost no lines or trowel marks left. If there are you're likely putting it on too thickly. The idea is to put a very tight coat on, to scrape it on. The material will quickly thicken up on your trowel as you spread and scrape it over the first coat (because of how thirsty the first coat is), and become unworkable, so just toss away any that gets like that and get some nice wet stuff from your bucket. Regarding taping your joints, I've never seen anyone do what you did, IE bedding scrim tape into wet compound. It's like a hybrid technique! Normally you only bed paper tape into wet compound. The mesh scrim tape is designed to go straight onto the plasterboard, which is why the tape is sticky. The holes allow the compound to adhere. The problem with your approach here is that some of your scrim tape will sit proud because some of the compound you are bedding it into may have firmed up already. This will cause uneven bulges and some of the scrim tape may be visible. By putting the scrim tape directly on the plasterboard and then covering it with compound it's easier to bury it and get a flat surface. It should only need a couple thin coats to do so. Love your channel, and the cats!
Another tip would be to get yourself a Marshalltown stainless steel 6"and 8" taping knife, and a mud tray. I am very experienced with a hawk and trowel (I do Venetian plaster and microcement) but I've always found that setup rather awkward for doing jointing/skimming compound. I think you'd find using a wider taping knife much easier.
I think everyone needs a Simon in their lives. Someone hardworking, talented and who just quietly gets on with the job. The plastering turned out well too, for a first timer. Don't be too hard on yourself.
Andrea, Omar....SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU!!! I WAS WORRIED, BUT I FEEL BETTER NOW!! Omar is doing fantastic work, Andrea is doing fantastic work, the guy that made the joist, fantastic work!!!👏👏👏 OH and Mum is doing fantastic work by keeping the bull whip smashing and cracking on to hurry you up with her room!!🤣🤣 Yall, it all looks beautiful, every step. Love the rock patio, the gentleman did a wonderful job. Now they can come here and do it for me! Free room, Bathroom, I suppose I can get up and fix you breakfast. Sandwiches for lunch and Shrimp Dinner every 4th Night!! Shrimp is expensive! 😂 And I can drive you to the beach every day at knock off so you can swim, go fishing, build a sandcastle, whatever your hearts desire with sand! Let's be clear on desire😂😂😂😂😂! Andrea the garden must be four feet high or 6 ft on the corn. 4ft on tomatoes. So many cucumbers 🥒 you had to pickle some!! Hey, is Omar going to squeeze in a Travel video again this year? So much to say..but later. I really miss yall!! Hey, get that Amazon account up and running!! I'm getting Andrea and Omar some shorts!! Both t-shirts, so if you don't put the size I will put XL for the size! Andrea it's the end of August, I'm wearing tank tops and shorts. Your burning me up!! My other emojies are not working. I hate updates! Any way Stay Safe, SEE you NEXT WEEK!!! 🙏❤️FLAGS,, SAIL, XX, THUMPS UP!!
Good to see you both. Well done with all the plastering Andrea. You did good. You should be proud of that. Your mother's place is coming along nicely. Enjoy your family time. Thank you for sharing. Lots of Love to you all. ❤❤❤❤ Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘
Hi, guys! We are your new portuguese neighbours, moving from Cascais to that beautiful village. Get to know us on our channel or come visit us at our new old house nearby. We would love to meet you and have a bit of a chat! 😉
Wonderful job and well done. I love the gardens. ❤ It's really coming together. Thank u Simon for all your hard work and skills I look forward to seeing you soon. And welcome back family!!! 🎉😢😅
Have you ever considered repurposing a dresser or buffet cabinet to make a cabinet for the bathroom? I've seen some and they're beautiful and you can make a very unique and interesting decorative piece!
There is a trowel that is made for the inside corners and of course edge of the ceiling where it meets the walls. It makes taping so much easier. Than also outside corners best to use metal corners to protect the edges.
Just to let you know for next time (am catching up with the videos so a bit late)... The fiberglass mesh tape with adhesive goes across the joints before you add compound (that's why it's got adhesive) if you bed it into the compound it doesn't really work well. You only put the compound on top of the tape that's already sticking to the wall. The paper tape on the other hand is put into a compound bed and then compound on top as well. This difference is the biggest reason why some people say that one or the other doesn't work well!
Well I think you did a bloody marvellous job of plastering especially for your first time so you shld feel very proud of yourself…and the garden looks fantastic…Simon has done a brilliant job of the ceiling joists and the brickwork…Omar goes around quietly.almost behind the scenes doing very important jobs like all the electrics as well as joinery so kudos to you Omar…and sorting the logistics for your work the two of you do every summer…❤
If you ever have to plaster walls again, think about doing a textured look to them , it hides all the imperfections and you don't have to do all that sanding to the walls. You can use a sponge or a paint roller brush to make the look of textured ..
When there are so many projects that are time sensitive, it’s very difficult to stay organized and get them done. Because you are placing value on family’s visit, it is understandable why videos must wait
Everything seems to be progressing beautifully. Thank you for keeping us up to date on your progress ❤ I look forward to each and every video you post.
Good to see you Omar and Andrea. A lot of nice work going on. Think I also saw Simon. That's a nice app, when it tells you which veggie to plant with which. You guys are a loving family. Hugs to Mom, and all of you.
Glad to see you back and plastering is not easy and I think Andrea you did a very good job for a first timer, I do not think I could have done it as well as you, you can be very proud of yourself. I've been watching so many diy and I do believe you put the strip of tape directly on the seams and corners then mud them, that is all I have seen them do. On the channel 'The Pethericks' there is a gentleman called Simon teaching one of the crew how to plaster and he gives a real in-depth explanation, he is so good as a teacher. Perhaps that will help in the future plastering's he gives very good tips. Have a lovely day and I hope we see another video soon. Love the progress you all have done, you Andrea, Omar and Simon.
Stop!! You don't need to plaster 'plaster board'! Just do the joins and corners (a corner tool would've been a real help btw) then sand them back. Next do a final coat of fine finishing plaster (usually comes in a tub) over the joins and corners and sand again - it's then ready for painting. Well done anyway, but please, Google when doing something new and save yourself some hard yakka! Also, do as Nature does when gardening and a top coat of compost to your beds before planting. Oh, and always mulch - Nature never leaves her soil bare to be blown or washed away. Mulch also conserves moisture, helps prevent pathogens splashing up, surpresses weed growth and finally, feeds the soil. Nature also doesn't disturb her soil because it disturbs and kills soil life - tge microbes, worms and fungi that feed plants and trees. Try no-dig and do your back a favour - Charles Dowdings videos are a fabulous source of no-dig infomation. Carrots definitely prefer to be sown directly in the soil - cover with a plank of wood to keep moist and remove after they germinate. They'll look sad and weedy but will spring up after a couple of days. Lastly, I saw one of your cats pooping in your veggie bed - please stop them as cat feces can be source of serious diseases in humans - Google a reputable education research site. Best to keep your cats indoors anyway as domestic cats are decimating local wildlife globally, esp when they live close to nature. The 186 animals each pet cat kills per year on average includes 110 native animals (40 reptiles, 38 birds and 32 mammals). Keep up the good work - I'm loving following your journey and have been bingeing on your videos for the past two nights reliving my 4 times of starting from scratch here in Australia. I made heaps of mistakes too and until I discovered what terrible destruction cats wreak, I always had 2 or 3 but didn't replace them when sadly they passed on. Best of luck to you both and Andrea's Mum - my second last build was my granny flat on my elder daughter's 5 acres - a fabulous learning experience for us both. I'm now 76 so that's it for me now! I'll enjoy watching UA-cams!! Best regards from Oz💪🦘
Hi Liz, thanks for your comment. You are totally right that we shouldn't skim the whole board but unfortunately, the wood underneath was so twisted it was bulging the plasterboard all over the place and the plaster wouldn't be uniform/leveled so we had to do the whole thing. It was also practice for another porject as we want to plaster with another product our bathrooms in he future. You are correct about the cats! We have been trying to keep them away! The hunter has a bell so he doesnt get them. The other one is way silly to catch birds, at best, he catches crickets. The third one is too old for that! But yeah, probably won't get more cats after them!
You did a great job hard work you should be proud of yourself will be lovely when finished nice to see your plants in the garden hope you get a good crop
I know Simon started wearing a hat earlier on to cover his bald spot, but he does have such beautiful hair, despite that. He seems like such a wonderful man with so many amazing things going for him, so him not wearing a hat really actually makes me happy. It tells me he might just be comfortable ❤ In saying that, I'm so proud of you guys! Same here. 😂 Withdrawal symptoms are real...! Glad all's well.
You both and Simon are doing an amazing job, well done 👍💯
Thanks for the plant app suggestion! Going to download that now. My favourite part 'you're going to be a very happy plant' 🧡
Think you both do an amazing job at the jobs you’ve tackled considering you are learning. You must give yourself credit for achieving so much!
Wonderful progress! Your a very hard working couple building a dream together. Enjoy your visit with your family.
Hi from New Zealand.i have partner works in plaster.dont worry about imperfections walls are sanded .smooth.
I think everyone needs a Simon in their lives. Someone hardworking, talented and who just quietly gets on with the job.
The plastering turned out well too, for a first timer. Don't be too hard on yourself.
When you notch your beams and rafters you effectively reduce the strength to that of the unnotchted portion. A 20cm beam becomes a 10cm beam.
Missed your more frequent videos. You guys are accomplishing so very much . Hurrah!

Btw good job!! 👏🏻
There is a trowel that is made for the inside corners and of course edge of the ceiling where it meets the walls. It makes taping so much easier. Than also outside corners best to use metal corners to protect the edges.
Do not sand walls with hands. You will get bumbs. Take a flash scrap peice of wood (or buy tool), wrap sand paper and sand it with straight surface.
Just to let you know for next time (am catching up with the videos so a bit late)...

because the edges were all uneven unfortunately

Carrots dont do well if you grow them in pots first. Just put the seeds direct in the ground, they germinate and grow better that way.

What about a textured finish if you are not happy.
Hi, hope you used paper tape on gaps and joins or else they are going to crack in the very near future. Its looking great
I did! but there isn’t paper tape, it’s a net tape that’s adhesive. slightly different.
