I like the detail how from Jimmy’s perspective, Anya’s death is so unacknowledged. He casually walks by her body to collect the gun to save himself. It really shows how little he cared for her and how evil he is
He even outrights blocks Anya out of his sight and mind while looking for a substitute disinfectant (after using up their only bottle as a spiked drink for Swansea). It's not just a useful censor for story progression. He genuinely doesn't care about her.
@@keithfilibeck2390 Yes, while Jimmy had gone clinically insane by this point. His dissociative choices still stem from his pre existing inabilities to feel sympathy for anyone other than himself.
The thing that pissed me off the most about the ending (MAJOR SPOILERS) is how easy Jimmy went in comparison to everyone else. Daisuke had to writhe in pain on the floor loosing blood due to the tens of cuts crawling through the faulty vent got him, Swansea had to watch this, face a lunatic with a gun, and then get somewhat "taunted", strapped to a chair looking down the barrel of a pistol. It's heavily implied Anya was raped, and died of intentional overdose, while being pregnant and knowing she'd kill her baby, next to the living corpse that was her captian. And curly, well, the entire fucking game is about him. He had to watch his entire crew, who he clearly cared about, die, one by one, in horrible ways and his close friend being behind it all. The worst part is that his ending isn't shut, he got frozen and its up to luck if someone finds him, cuz if not hes going to slowly starve to death, alone. Meanwhile Jimmy, the guy behind ALL this, just shoots himself once and done. Lights out, no suffering. And the fucker probably was satisfied too, thinking that he just sacrificed himself for his captain.
I think that's why the ending felt unsatisfying for me. not like "that's a bad ending," its more "damn, Jimmy really deluded himself into thinking he's done the right thing here"
I like that there’s not even a specific character’s name as the title for this video, just the title of the game, because we all know who it’s going to be about
@@Hypercube2017 I liked this take that the villain was Jimmy and the Pony Express company, I'm sick of people blaming Curly when even Vile Eye explained why he coudn't do anything about Jimmy under those circumstances. Sure, if Curly didn't pity Jimmy, he would probably now living happily married to Anya while Swansea returns with Daisuke to his kids. But i don't like when people blame empathy and compassion as "enabling". Batman didn't enabled Joker by not killing him, Curly also did everything he could.
@ yeah, and while I see that the cryo pods are actually a valid option for containment, it’s definitely not something I would’ve thought of in a high-stress situation like that. Blaming Curly because of a few choices that _could’ve_ been made differently is madness, especially since hindsight is 20/20.
@@MrConredsX Curly really did believe talking was gonna make it better. Like dude, just put Jimmy in a cryopod after the assault on Anya and be done with it.
thats actually a great lesson to learn: either you accept your self for who you are and be happy, or you change what you dont like about your self to be happy. doing neither means a bad ending.
I like the idea that Curly laughs because he realizes his passive nature & enabling is partially to blame. He knows what needs to be done, but he's now powerless to help anyone.
That's what I think. He knows that he could've done something, but it's just too late and now they're all in the shit even if he was a good captain most of the time
Also, because Anya hid the gun in the place he now resides. She hid it from Jimmy and now the one thing she never wanted is happening. Curly knows she was right by now and may find it deeply ironic.
The sleep deprivation thing is what gets me. Have some experience with sleep deprivation and it is one of the most damaging things you can do to a person. If someone gets less than 5 hours of sleep a night, they won't just feel like absolute shit in the morning, they will start having micro naps during the day. They will get sleep deficit which puts you an entire day behind in your sleep cycle, if this goes on long enough it will lead to seizures and other kinds neurological disorders. Any company that is willing to do that needs to be stopped LOL
Like, that's the detail that really made me realize how dystopic this company is. 5 hours of sleep will damage the brain's capacity and the body over time, and will 100% trigger all sorts of issues on the crew, only causing more unrest, chaos and death along time as their employees lose their marbles over sleep deprivation. Pony Express is the definition of corporate evil.
It is actually not dystopic. On board of most of cargo vessels worldwide you can't get proper rest for several months in a row. Jetlags, jumping the time zones and irregular schedule really drive seamen crazy.
This now makes me hope you look into the characters and themes of fear and hunger, another terrifying and depressing game with an oddly wholesome and funny fandom.
I like the juxtpostion from Jimmy and Swansea, Jimmy seems affable enough at the start, till you understand the context, and Swansea seems like an asshole, but when the chips are down, Swansea is a heroic, thoughtful, and willing to self sacrifice for others, and Jimmy is the total inverse.
The thing I think about the "cartoon horses" comment is that it leads into the idea of Jimmy sexually harassing Anya. He says that stuff because it's her he's talking to, and he starts pushing the boundaries with stuff like that similar to how abuse can be like boiling a frog. The cartoon horses comment represents how little he respects the psych evals, but also how little he respects /Anya/. To him, toying with her by making comments that make her uncomfortable is funny, and it's the first step towards his ultimate commitment of a heinous crime against Anya, which is borne out by how he never cares about what happened to her. She's not a real person to him.
One detail that stuck out in my mind is the Polle in the final hallucinations having its dialogue displayed in the exact same color as Anya's. With that connection and it referring to Jimmy as its "old man", I think there is some part deep in Jimmy's subconscious that is calling himself out for his horrible actions against Anya and the pregnancy he caused, but with it being the horse mascot, it's driving more home how he refuses to see humanity in Anya or her pregnancy, no matter how far the events of the game drive him.
Remember the dead pixel dialogue? Every crew member has their own. With Swansea it was the unhappines with his own life. Daisuke masks his insecurity with cheerful smile. Anya is... we all know what her situation is. Curly also stated what keeps him down. Jimmy however, IMHO reppresses his own conscience, if he truly disregards Anya as aperson, why he uses her "Our worst moments don't make us monsters"? I do think that Jimmy is just too scared to admit the fact that he hurt her, another human being and before you counter with "What about killing Swansea?" he hallucinated that life or death situation, Jimmy is too much of coward to actually kill anyone, he didn't let Curly die with dignity, and only watch as Daisuke was fading right in front of him.
Curly could have "detained" Jimmy in the cryo pod and kept him on ice until they reached their destination. Would have solved the food supply issue, too.
a reasonable suggestion, but the problem is that Jimbo is a co-pilot, and I don't know much about piloting, but having a co-pilot (even with an auto-pilot feature for long trips) seems like a huge deal that you can't just get rid of with putting them into the cryo-pod, Curly was probably considering that moment beside the others, even the fact that Curly is not just a captain, but also a pilot, suggests that they have a personnel shortage, and losing the 2nd pilot is the last thing a ship needs on the 1-year trip
Someone in another video on here also mentioned the fact that Jimmy basically did nothing as captain. He didn't have any plans for things, it was Anya who spoon-fed him ideas and plans. I can't stand Jimmy bro lol
It's the self pity that gets me. Dysfunctionally selfish such in a chilling way. Can't reckon with how much of a bastard he is, and he *thinks* he gets it. Swansea cut right to the core of Jimmy. Can't even see it.
My favorite imagery in the game is the use of light and dark to compare Curly and Jimmy. During the segment before we interview Jimmy we walk through a lake of blood with broken ladders before we are eventually absorbed by the rising sun. Jimmy also mentions how Curly is at the top of the ladder and he's at the bottom. Further reinforcing this idea. And throughout the game the time before the crash is lighter and had more green tones, whereas after is filled with darker and has more red tones. I think this meant to show how different Jimmy and Curly are. Curly is the star, he is warm with the crew and gives everything he has to everyone, without asking for anything in return. On the other hand Jimmy is the black-hole, dark, cruel, he does nothing but take and destroy. Circling back to the TV scene, what do we see? A black-hole absorbing a star, darkness overtaking light, Jimmy overtaking Curly as captain, Jimmy (a cosmic body in this metaphor) killing Curly.
Another depressing detail about the Pony Express company is the implication that them going under wasn't due to how terribly they treated their employees, but due to crew-maintained cargo ships becoming obsolete in favor of fully-automated ones.
I mean look at what happened to our Pony Express during the Western development in the USA. For a while it was a mean to reach the distance between the East and West but it lasted about only a year when the telegraph was finally financed to make the junction, by then, the whole idea was pointless because messages could be brought in an instant rather than about 10 days. So much like in Mouthwashing, the whole thing lost out on technological development that proved to be better and the couriers as well as those that handled the outposts lost their job and pretty much were left with nothing to show for it.
31:28 There was one other option Curly could have possibly used to lock Jimmy up. Jimmy could have been forced into cryo for 8 months making him unable to do anything and would be isolated. It would like still result in punishment for the whole crew, but they would all still be alive.
Pony express is going under, I doubt it would be much punishment compared to the hell jimmy put them through after the crash. I do think Curly deserves to be rescued and be forgiven for what happened on that ship and the former higher ups of Pony express should be punished.
6:57 This is probably nitpicky of me, but I just wanted to mention that quinine is the key ingredient of pretty much all tonic water, though obviously in very small doses. It's what gives it the bitter taste :) so it's unlikely to be related to negligence by Pony Express, though it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't care about the amount or something. ** pushes glasses up nose ** Really enjoyed your video as always!
One point to make: tonic water in general has quinine. That's how gin and tonic became so popular bc people were already drinking tonic water for health reasons, and the gin made it taste better + get you drunk. So, while yeah the conditions on the ship were awful, the tonic water containing quinine isn't a crazy thing to have
"And I defended him! Shouldn't have- gave him a job I earned! He'd never change...he never changed even when he took his own life. But 'that couldn't be Jimmy! Couldn't be my friend Jimmy!' Leeching off our lives? And he doesn't get to take responsibility? What a *sick joke*"
Love your videos! Here's my list Analyzing Evil: 1. Serena Joy from Handmaid's Tale 2. Homelander from The Boy's 3. Negan from The Walking Dead 4. Omni man from Invincible 5. Black Jack Randall from Outlander 6. Stephen Bonnet from Outlander
Generally, he tries to wait until a show is over before analyzing any of its characters, so Homelander will have to wait until after season 5, and Negan will have to wait until whenever Dead City ends. With how Omni-Man’s arc is going (and goes in the comic), it wouldn’t really be accurate to call him evil, but there could definitely be a video on Thragg or Viltrum in general.
@ethansolomon2126 Hey, thanks for letting me know! Been awhile since I've seen the recent videos he's posted about it. I think we all wanna get his fresh thoughts out on the content he analyses as they drive towards their completion. Can't wait! 😁
there have been few characters that have disturbed me as much as jimmy. mouthwashing really got under my skin and i have thought about it every day ever since i first saw the game. its really something special
In relation to your question of "What could Curly have done differently?" with regards to Jimmy. He could have forced him into one of the cryopods. Jimmy would be completely incapacitated for the entire duration of the trip, and could presumably be capable of waking up at another time. However, there are issues with this though. Knowing Pony Express, it would be a good bet to assume that the cryopods are unsafe and come with the possibility of inflicting permanent damage, one way or another. In addition to the fact that forcing Jimmy into a cryopod at gunpoint would still be fairly extreme and damaging to their friendship, to say the least. Still, any drawbacks to using the cryopods aren't stated in the game as far as I could tell.
Mouthwashing is one of the bravest games I’ve seen in ages , considering the risks of positioning the player as such a loathsome and reprehensible protagonist.
Pony Express is definitely one of those companies that instead of giving you a raise for all your hard work, they instead throw a pizza party . 😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😢😢😢
While it would be very far from ideal, Curly could have dealt with Jimmy by sealing him in one of the cryopods and taking the risk of now being short two pods, rather than allowing a dangerous person free reign of the ship
The problem with that is that means on the off chance a serious emergency hits - the risk of which exponentially increases in the absence of a copilot - at least one of the innocent crew members is guaranteed to die while Jimmy will be nice and snug in his cryopod. Curly's indecision is largely down to the fact that once he got a grasp of the situation, he realised he had no good options, a consequence of the fact that Pony Express didn't properly screen the crew, didn't provide proper provisions for Daisuke, the last minute addition to the crew, didn't put in facilities to account for the sole female on an otherwise all male ship, and their only instructions to Curly in the event of something like Jimmy was "shoot 'em," when Curly likely hasn't been trained or never been expected to kill someone in cold blood to maintain order.
I always assumed anya was implying she wanted curly to lock jimmy in a cryochamber until the trip was done, she said she didn't want him on board anymore and curly couldve just fired him and let him wait for punishment back on earth as a popsicle
Suggestions for Analyzing Evil in the future: Bojack Horseman Mr. Burns (the Simpsons) D.W. Reed (Arthur) Caillou (Caillou) Sideshow Bob (the Simpsons) Saruman the White Grima Wormtongue
Yo Bojack horseman would be such a good episode. But I feel like that would be an episode where you have to analyze the whole show and not just Bojack himself.
The one topic I see brought up a lot regarding what curly could’ve done is in regard to the cryo pods. In theory, I can see how that might’ve worked, but as you’ve addressed here, the company is cheap with both materials and precautions taken for their employees. We can assume the cryo pods were functional because of the end scene, however it’s likely the team would’ve been heavily fined for using them, considering the fact that they haven’t already been using them. Theoretically it would be more time and cost effective to have the team manning the ship spend the majority of their trip in the cryo pods, with them being automatically woken up every month or so to do routine maintenance and in the case of an emergency, they’d be there to fix any issues the ship couldn’t handle on its own. The presence of the autopilot system implies to me that they had the technology to implement an automatic waking system, but pony express didn’t, so who knows. Either way, the fact that the cryo pods are there for emergencies only implies to me that they aren’t as functional as they’re being advertised to be, or the cost of the energy they use is too much to justify using them outside of a life or death situation. Which then brings up the same penalty issue that comes with reporting Jimmy. I still think curly should’ve done something more than just stand around, but I also think it’s a lot more complicated than “why didn’t he use the cryo pods is he stupid”. All of this also ignores the fact that Jimmy would NOT have gone willingly into one of those and we don’t know how dangerous he would’ve been if they had tried. Probably less dangerous than the alternative lol but that was probably part of what would’ve gone into considering putting him into one of the cryo pods. Thank you for coming to my useless Ted talk I’m going to finish watching the video now
You know this game made a perfect hate sink when Tiktok doesn't even wanna mention Jimmy AT ALL or even make fun edits of him. Tiktok mentions Homelander, Walter White, and Patrick Bateman and yet nobody likes Jimmy. Nobody makes sigma male edits of him. At least Homelander and Walter were kind of tragic and while Patrick is deplorable at least he's funny at times but Jimmy is the most pathertic man indeed. I think the reason why people despise Jimmy is that the game doesn't justify his behavior at all. When it hits his reasons for acting this way it hits hard. And you despise playing him. Walter was the supposed "anti hero" Breaking Bad intented for us to support until it pulled us out of the rug. He was never a good person and Walt admitted he did it for himself than supporting his family. I pity Saul and Jesse more than him. It also helps that Jesse redeemed himself and while he isn't a complete good guy he didn't wanted to be like Walt. But in the end he did suffered from cancer and he lost everything thanks to his ego and self hubris. Even if he deserved it his story is beautifully told. Homelander is the biggest scum and yet he is tragic somewhat. It does not redeem his actions but had he be given a better childhood than being a product he could've been great. I mean The Boys Diabolical did showed he did genuinely wanted to be a good hero and had those two terrorists didn't make things worse he could've been Superman. He still ended up being the biggest monster in his universe and his treatment of his others is for his ego. Even poor Ryan was an extension of him. And his story will go down on the horrors of fame and the reality of ego. And finally Patrick is the most deplorable and vile. Probably the closest to Jimmy. He treats people like a newspaper. He hurts others and wants to be the best. Yet he is fun and cannot deny Bateman had fun moments. Especially how entertaining he was. I mean the acting for him by Christian Bale wa entertaining enough. But why does Walter, Homelander and him are more loved than even Jimmy? Because it's simple really. Jimmy while he does not come close to Homelander or Patrick in terms of evil we despise him on a PERSONAL level. Like how we despise Umbridge a horrible teacher than the malevolent dark lord Voldemort. He wasn't supposed to be sympathetic he's like us you and me. He isn't an underdog like Walter, he isn't a famous celebrity like Homelander, or the yippe man like Patrick Bateman. Perhaps Jimmy hits us on a personal level because we see his POV and his twisted justifcations as a "good guy". He treated his crew like garbage and he is definitely going to get comparisons to Griffith. The game shows how far gone he is as a person. He's not Tohru Adachi from Persona 4 for example because while Adachi was deplorable you can at least pity Adachi on dealing with self worth and being special. And Jimmy is not the Dude from Postal because the Postal franchise is absurd and a satire than Mouthwash. Or Tyler Durden from Fight Club is more loved because I'm sure men would love Tyler's motivation than Jimmy's motivation all day. I mean Jimmy's crimes are so bad I cannot explain half of it. At the end of the day Jimmy is probably the most pathetic fictionalnmain character I have ever seen. Even Shinji from NGE and Alex from YIKK aren't as pathetic compared to him. He is not a good person because he's a delusional nobody. A freak who's actions are so deplorable you cannot even justify it. Do we have Homelanders, Tylers, Adachis, Walters, and Batemans in real life yes. But do we meet Jimmys in real life..........sadly yes.
I'm slightly more sympathetic than everyone else, he's clearly evil, but he's also clearly completely insane in a very realistic way, he's "gone", he's completely disassociating from reality itself, its hard to fully think of him as someone like HOmelander.
You can argue that with Walter White, Homelander, and Patrick Bateman there is a sense of glory that can be taken from their actions. Although they are clearly morally reprehensible, their actions are often viewed positively within the confines of the media they're in. Kills are cathartic for Bateman since everyone looks down on him, and he's "reclaiming his power/control" over his life. Same with Walter, but he justifies every bad choice he makes in ways that the viewer can somewhat sympathize with. Finally, with Homelander, although he's the obvious villain, he's worshipped and arguably the most powerful person in his universe. His bad actions are almost never punished. Each of these characters are made to feel triumphant or victorious when they successfully commit horrible acts, and in some cases, we're expected to root for them. All three characters are pathetic in their own ways, but with enough "positive" aspects that similarly inclined people might latch onto to justify or glorify their horrible behavior. With Jimmy, it's clear that he's scummy from the get-go. We don't see any triumphant moments with him. There isn't anything to glorify. He looks increasingly pathetic the more we learn about him and the game doesn't try to show him in a positive light at all. He's just a bad person, and no one wants to relate to a clearly bad person.
I feel like Jimmy is the most realistic one in a way. The other characters mentioned here are representative of situations that are less common than a creepy control freak abusing others at a dead end job
I really want more of the world of Mouthwashing, more lore on the horrors of The Pony Express, and how the company became so disgusting and corrupted as they are. Also Jimmy deserves more suffering, maybe a walking simulator about him being tormented for his past, even before the events of Mouthwashing. not just what his warped psyche sees, but what hell he's sent to has made for him to wander for eternity. And as much as i feel bad for what became of Curly, He was the reason for all this to happen. if he had just put an end to Jimmy, or better, not even involved him in the first place. none of this would of occurred, though It doesn't mean something bad wouldn't have happened, it would of been as horrid. I do wanna see what happens next. does Curly get found alive? does he get help? since it's in an undetermined date in the future, they may have the resources to heal curly like with nano technology to restore his skin and limbs? how could Curly come to terms with what he caused? or would the Pony Express even bother looking for the wreckage? I Must know these things, lol.
And they come with a catch: Maybe they force the treatment on patients that can't consciously consent due to injury & make them cost a small fortune so Curly heals but gets a lifetime of debt. Just some ideas I'm playing with
If you cut out the fat the game is a cautionary tale about condemning yourself to a life you hate and the dangers pf refusing to grow as a person, taking whatever you can from others before inevitably avoiding them.
Some people say Curly did nothing wrong, but I say that's horseshit. Jimmy is an irredeemable scumbag but Curly knew what he did to Anya (at least, that's the interpretation I got from his dialogue w/Jimmy and Anya - if he didn't know about the pregnancy he definitely knew about the assault) but he opted to pretend like it didn't happen, probably hoping it'd get resolved once they reached their destination by someone other than himself. He chose to ignore it until it blew up quite literally in his face. I recall someone bringing up how he doesn't see the dead pixel that Anya sees being a good metaphor for this.
I think that too but then I think about what the solution would be. Keep Jimmy locked in a room? Knowing what Jimmy does in the game leads me to believe that's not so simple.
@@chimpwimp9407How would Curly know that this manbaby actually WOULD crash the ship? Jimmy acts like a Gen z liberal: emotional and scornful as soon as things don't go his way, then quietly disregard the whole thing altogether. If he had more of an insight about the exact mental state of Jimmy then i guess something would be done, but whole crew was somewhat shaken already, and Jimmy never took Anya's evals seriously to begin with. I'm also certain that if Curly did as he was told, Jimmy would have either done it anyway or crash the ship into planet they were delivering the mouthwash to
Perfect timing, I've been watching the analyzing evil series all week, and Mouthwashing has been my obsession for weeks. So many details have taken me a long time to realize, especially since it's from Jimmy's perspective so we're seeing how he rationalizes the most vile shit to the point where we don't see most of it directly until he's fully unhinged at the end of the game.
Also of note is the first time the player interacts with the Polle statue outside of the intro Jimmy states 'they make toys of this thing. For kids." or something similar.
That could be one way they get employees. They ingrain the company in the minds of people at an early age so they're more likely to care about it when they're old enough to work.
Well, it was only one of them that was actually a danger to her, also the fourth one was a last minute addition, that was actually far better for the whole crew's mental health. Even Jimmy seem more uplifted when talking to Daisuke. If anything the main issue is nepotism.
@@jamoohughes8455 That is not a problem in any developed country. Unusual but so is 4 women and 1 man. You are basically saying that 4 men will inevitably grape her or do something to her - not because they don't like her or anything personal but simply because they are men. Just say you hate men instead.
Even Jimmy’s design screams sketchy asf. Like he looks like the stereotypical scumbag who walks up to you in a biker bar to start shit. From his hair, his stubble, to his somewhat swarthy appearance. There were so many signs
I just want to point out that this game isn't based on capitalism per-se, but rather on its extremist state: corporatism. To those unfamiliar, corporatism often (though not exclusively) occurs during the final stages of capitalism, and is basically the socioeconomic equivalent of cancer to healthy cells: whereby corporations within a capitalist society obtain power over the nation, policies and people within. From thereon, the profit-first policies they adopt in order to out-compete one-another, become an all-consuming detriment to both themselves and to all within. TL;DR: Capitalism: 💷👍🏻 Corporatism: 🖕🏻💀
My four favorite suggestions: - Analyzing Evil: Park Yeon-jin from The Glory - Analyzing Evil: Frank from Once Upon a Time in the West - Analyzing Evil: Thor "The Swede" Gundersen from Hell on Wheels - Analyzing Evil: Suguru Kamoshida from Persona 5
The only thing Curly could have done to jimmy to "arrest" him and keep him detained would be to, in my opinion, put him in one of the cryo pods against his own will. That could have been done with the help of Swansie, perhaps at gun point or while jimmy was sleeping. Still, that wouldent be an easy decision to make as a captain. We learn that there are company policies that fine the whole crew for miss use of the cryo pods and maybe using them as a glorified prison cell would count as a "miss use", further more, planning out such an arrest is both something that would take time and would likely be something curly would only consider doing after exausting several other opitions. Ive also seem several people float around the idea that Curly should have held Jimmy accountable by exposing him to the rest of the crew, openly telling the others of what happened, but i think that would be a stupid idea, as it wouldent solve anything but instead only make Jimmy more stressed, unstable, and prone to taling "severe actions"
Great video! I appreciate you talking more about Pony Express, their practices, and how they contributed to this chaos. I also liked that you touched on the meanings behind the hallucinations. Sorry you had to talk about Jimmy
Interesting video, I’m absolutely gonna have to play this game very soon, thanks for todays upload! Also, on the topic of video games, could a potential video be made for either Richard Trager or Eddie Gluskin from Outlast?
I love how the community around the story has adopted a variation of the meme "I am sorry that you needed to meet Jimmy" because that is not something in the game, is just enough people understanding how awful Jimmy and how making more people aware of him is just a necessary evil to experience a great story
28:30 I think it's important to note that Anya doesn't say that Jimmy didn't respond to her news. She says that he didn’t say anything that makes a difference. Based on what she says later when she locks the medical room, I think he told her to take care of it with some pills. As Anya says during the scene, she's doing exactly what he told her to.
I've been addicted to everything about this game for like a month now. Seeing you cover it is truly peak. Also J***y is at least Space Griffith. Everything he does in service of getting himself out of trouble. Everything he goes through in the "guilt" segments at the end are just him trying to get out of trouble with himself. He never cared about what he did to anyone. What he did to curly was a last minute save for him to call himself a "good man". Man there is nothing good about J***y. He is absolute scum. If there are no haters of J***y I'm dead.
@violeticonoclast indeed! I hadn't thought of that, to be honest. The "one day he'll thank me" part implied that he did it to keep him alive, but what you said actually adds another layer to it.
My top recommendations for characters to analyze: 1. Tomura Shigaraki & All For One from My Hero Academia 2. The Crooked Man from The Wolf Among Us 3. Scarecrow from the Arkham games 4. Aaron Stampler from Primal Fear 5. “Casanova” from Kiss The Girls 6. The Creeper from the Jeepers Creepers franchise 7. “Billy” from Black Christmas 1974 8. General Zod from Man of Steel 9. Cletus Kasady from Venom: Let There Be Carnage 10. Sarah from Cobweb 2023
The posters remind me so much of this furniture construction site I once went to as a student health inspector. These stupid posters with things like 'Every mistake you make is a gift for our competitors!' written on them were ALL over the place. The chief engineer was begging us to 'condemn' the sites waste burner which heated the facility in the winter from the wood chip waste, because it was spewing black smoke into the air, they were right next to a housing estate, and it was past his ability to mend, and management would do absolutely nothing other than to scream at him to patch it up. They wouldnt replace it or fix it properly unless forced to on a statuitory level. Management tried to hide the fact the air quality monitoring station had been off for weeks. It was a wide awake nightmare and I was glad I was only there for two hours. I cannot imagine being stuck in the place like that for a year straight like the ppl in this story.
I find Jimmy more of a rabid dog than a Voldemort: more than culpable for the parties he bites, but so far gone that he should have been rejected by the parties that unduly enabled him. Had Curly decided to euthanize their friendship, the dirge of the Tulpar would have had a far different conclusion.
42:23 As for this scene where Jimmy is being chased by Swansea, I believe that was more of a hallucination(or some sort of mental gymnastics) by Jimmy. I think the truth is he found Swansea and tied him up at gunpoint then executed him.
I am so happy that this game has been recognized by so many. I think the game was excellent and felt like an interactive movie more than a video game! Go play it!!
Playing this game when it first came out, it was very apparent that there are a lot of parallels between Jimmy and Curly (I thought this up until I realized Jimmy fucking r*ped anya). One actually tries to own up to responsibility as captain (but still fails anya) while the other is trying to run from it but act like he has everything under control as captain (fails as a human being). I think it’s very interesting that you only play from their two perspectives overall. Most of the story being told from Jimmy’s perspective as an unreliable POV adds extra layers of completely fucked trains of thought that I hadnt even realized until I thought about it afterwards and watched analysis. I think the most heartbreaking thing I noticed is when Anya asked “Why do you think they lock the medbay but not our cabins?” Jimmy didn’t deserve the easy way out, he got to keep running until the very end, he never owned up to anything but the hallucinations in his own head.
Pony Express was the overarching evil here that lead Jimmy down the path of madness that in the end lead him to unaliving himself when you look at Jimmy's crimes he took the coward's way out in a way to avoid taking responsibility for his own actions. My pick for your next video is: -Handsome Jack from Borderlands.
Minor note about the tonic packet and quinine: tonic water quite literally IS quinine, and the reason Gin and Tonic exists is because Colonial era British soldiers would mix the tonic with gin to make it easier to drink. Modern day tonic water has a lot less quinine and more sweeteners added since it's usually drank as a beverage rather than a medicine. I think the reason the packet being mostly quinine is supposed to refer to the fact sweetener is restricted, not for actual space malaria treatment.
Funny you mention Edward, here in Brasil there's a very famous sicko and sociopath called Suzane Richtofen who convinced her boyfriend and his brother to kill her wealthy parents, she faked a robbery and lied to the cops (didn't worked much) but even inside of prison she had ways to get everything she wanted. it's a crazy story i'm not making truth by just saying the plot points

7:51 quinine is actually just something thats commonly found in normal tonic water used for gin and tonics and high end quinine tonic serums all have it
Thank you for saying, I was gonna mention haha. That’s apparently why in the colonial tropics where malaria was common, gin and tonics were a common drink of choice or so I’m told.
One thing I never see mentioned in these Mouthwashing analysis is that the name of the ship. Tulpar is the name of a Celestial Horse from Turkish mythology, that is supposed to represent speed, elegance, and "cultural depth" which I found kind of funny. Of course the Pony Express company would name their ship something like that, They're vain as well as morally corrupt.
I think curly couldve done something. He couldve let anya sleep in the medical bay (so she can feel safe sleeping in a room with a lock - the game explicitly tells us theres sleeping mats inside the medbay, since thatd what they use post-crash) he could've let anya hold the gun case so she felt safe, he couldve given anya the gun entirely. He couldve supported anya's emotional state at least instead of forcing her to feel unsafe for who knows how long. And if he did want to punish jimmy, there is always the cryopods. They're going unused, and it wouldn't be all too hard for him to just shove jimmy into the cryopod and turn it on. The activation method is outside of the pod after all - just as jimmy trapped curly in the pod for twenty years, curly couldve just shoved him in there until they arrived at their planet. This is of course the extreme option, but there WERE options. He just chose to do nothing, both about jimmy and about anya's emotional state. Even an act as simple as letting anya sleep somewhere with a lock (using the aforementioned sleeping mats) wouldve done a lot of good for her.
Probably but Jimmy was highly manipulative and always took advantage of Curly since they were younger. I dont know how far that will last considering that we saw the worst of Jimmy.

Jimmy also kind of perfectly encapsulates Pony Express’ idea of “collective punishment.” He’s the one constantly making bad decisions, but he makes the entire crew suffer the consequences
there were meant to be only four people on the ship, however the company added daisuke last second, and as the ship was only meant to have four people, it had only four cryopods
Great video, though I thought I should point out that tonic, or tonic water - a common sometimes carbonated liquid is a very common drink for mixing with gin or whiskey. Tonic water always has quinine in it as historically it was made with particular bitters and served with alcohol in colonized tropical regions. It was believed drinking quinine would help stave off malaria which was far more common in those hot regions. thus things like a gin and tonic, or gin with tonic water, became a popular drink. It is still very popular today in particular regions of the world and tonic water can usually be found in stores that sell alcohol and mixing ingredients. I am partial to it myself and often drink chilled tonic with fruit juice. It has a bitter, citrus flavour.
thanks for covering this game. Jimmy is without a doubt one of the most despicable characters i've seen in video games. a narcissist, a coward who couldn't truly face who he was and what he did, and all around deserving of contempt.
31:18 Curly could put Jimmy on Cyropod and freeze him there until they arrived on Earth. It was total failure on Curly part to lock Jimmy in a Cyropod.
Quinine is typically put in tonic water as a flavor additive - it comes from the bark of a fever-tree if i recall correctly. This initially started as a malaria preventative but has continued as people became accustomed to its flavor. However, there is certainly an argument to be made that in such a cost-cutting locale it’s surprising that they would offer tonic if not to promote some functional benefit in employees.

"evil" sure, but mostly completely dissasocitave, Jimmy is clinically insane.
@@keithfilibeck2390 Yes, while Jimmy had gone clinically insane by this point. His dissociative choices still stem from his pre existing inabilities to feel sympathy for anyone other than himself.

@@keithfilibeck2390 well he also you know did some horrible things before he went insane

I think that's why the ending felt unsatisfying for me. not like "that's a bad ending," its more "damn, Jimmy really deluded himself into thinking he's done the right thing here"
Shoot, going by the ships readings when they hit the rock, they ventured WAY off course. It will be a miracle for anyone to find him.
Methinks that "I hope this hurts" was the only thought on Curly's mind when he heard gunshot

What a great take!
Waste of a cryo pod
@@CloverKyngeverybody dies without it anyway
a reasonable suggestion, but the problem is that Jimbo is a co-pilot, and I don't know much about piloting, but having a co-pilot (even with an auto-pilot feature for long trips) seems like a huge deal that you can't just get rid of with putting them into the cryo-pod, Curly was probably considering that moment beside the others, even the fact that Curly is not just a captain, but also a pilot, suggests that they have a personnel shortage, and losing the 2nd pilot is the last thing a ship needs on the 1-year trip
Someone in another video on here also mentioned the fact that Jimmy basically did nothing as captain. He didn't have any plans for things, it was Anya who spoon-fed him ideas and plans. I can't stand Jimmy bro lol
Me before: what the hell is mouthwashing?

What a great take!
@@mrconroy4672 That is fair. I didn't think about that fact. Eitherway, any dock in pay couldn't be worse than what actually happened.

** pushes glasses up nose **

One point to make: tonic water in general has quinine.

@@IAmBored347 I'd say Jimmy's more like Griffith than Homelander and Walter White.
I mean I've seen lots of people joke about Jimmy but on in the sense of just mocking him and calling him pathetic, or calling him a monster, or both
You can argue that with Walter White, Homelander, and Patrick Bateman there is a sense of glory that can be taken from their actions.

Just some ideas I'm playing with
@@lizardbashkins9042 that definitely fits with the depressing setting they set with the game, so he has to go on another horrid trip.
I recall someone bringing up how he doesn't see the dead pixel that Anya sees being a good metaphor for this.
strawman
I'm also certain that if Curly did as he was told, Jimmy would have either done it anyway or crash the ship into planet they were delivering the mouthwash to
@
I honestly wouldn’t expect him to know. I’m just trying to think of how I would handle it.
@@chimpwimp9407Yeah true…there’s really no ideal solution in this scenario but Curly still chose to do nothing.
Ah yes, mouthwashing, a true evil alongside flossing and toothpaste
You should do an episode about Lisa the painful. Just Lisa the painful.
I'll second that!
ANALYZING EVIL: BUDDY :)
I think another sign of how messed up Pony Express is how they placed a single woman on a mission with FOUR men.
Well, it was only one of them that was actually a danger to her, also the fourth one was a last minute addition, that was actually far better for the whole crew's mental health. Even Jimmy seem more uplifted when talking to Daisuke. If anything the main issue is nepotism.
@missmarshmallow5775 I understand. I was just stating something I noticed when I first watched the demo--it stood out to me.
Equality.
TL;DR:
Capitalism: 💷👍🏻
Corporatism: 🖕🏻💀
He orchestrated it, Jimmy! But not our Jimmy. Not our precious Jimmy! What a sick joke!
My four favorite suggestions:
- Analyzing Evil: Park Yeon-jin from The Glory
- Analyzing Evil: Frank from Once Upon a Time in the West
- Analyzing Evil: Thor "The Swede" Gundersen from Hell on Wheels
- Analyzing Evil: Suguru Kamoshida from Persona 5
Yeon-jin the type of person to tell a homeless person to just buy a house
Oh my god YES I used to love Outlast that would be sick!
That line about being super cool made me smile INSTATLY
I had to rewind to see if I heard that correctly
I've been addicted to everything about this game for like a month now. Seeing you cover it is truly peak.
Also J***y is at least Space Griffith. Everything he does in service of getting himself out of trouble. Everything he goes through in the "guilt" segments at the end are just him trying to get out of trouble with himself. He never cared about what he did to anyone. What he did to curly was a last minute save for him to call himself a "good man".
Man there is nothing good about J***y. He is absolute scum. If there are no haters of J***y I'm dead.
All aboard the Jimmy hate train 👍🏼
Man, I Abhor Jimmy and Pity him at the same time
So real he deserves absolutely nothing
Brother had 3 corpses in the ship and still fed Curly his own leg 🙏🏻😭
His "speech" after sawing curly's leg off makes me believe it was an act of vengeance.
@violeticonoclast indeed! I hadn't thought of that, to be honest. The "one day he'll thank me" part implied that he did it to keep him alive, but what you said actually adds another layer to it.
Your analysis of this game made me look at Curely so much more differently. I completely commend you for that. Spot on, my man. Spot on and bravo!

HOLY SHIT A FEW DAYS AGO I LEFT A COMMENT ASKING 4 THIS. I HAVE MAGIC AT MY FINGERTIPS.
I think the most heartbreaking thing I noticed is when Anya asked “Why do you think they lock the medbay but not our cabins?”
Jimmy didn’t deserve the easy way out, he got to keep running until the very end, he never owned up to anything but the hallucinations in his own head.
When are we getting a new reshuffle list it’s been a minute i’m starving for one! pause.
I'm so excited for this episode and I have to recommend the villians from the Glory as well as Scorpius from Farscape!
I have loved your content since episode 1. I’m so happy to see you can keep it going and I can’t wait to watch your content for years to come
So happy you’re covering this! As soon as I finished the game I knew it would’ve been perfect for an analyzing evil video
Pony Express was the overarching evil here that lead Jimmy down the path of madness that in the end lead him to unaliving himself when you look at Jimmy's crimes he took the coward's way out in a way to avoid taking responsibility for his own actions.
My pick for your next video is:
-Handsome Jack from Borderlands.

It's really fucked up that the world is full of Jimmys. The rest of us just have to try and dodge them the best we can as they hurtling around destroying everyone in their path. I think im gonna go out and touch some grass after watching this lol.

Tonic always have quinine. It’s part of the taste
Yimpy is pure evil
Analyzing Evil:
1. Bojack Horseman from Bojack Horseman
2. Beatrice Horseman from Bojack Horseman
3. William Afton from Fnaf
4. Satan from Paradise Lost
Jimmy also kind of perfectly encapsulates Pony Express’ idea of “collective punishment.” He’s the one constantly making bad decisions, but he makes the entire crew suffer the consequences
Micah walked so that Jimmy could run.
I find it concerning that there’s only four cryo-pods, which makes me curious if they had to take turns using the cryo-pod.🐱
there were meant to be only four people on the ship, however the company added daisuke last second, and as the ship was only meant to have four people, it had only four cryopods
Brush teething is prolly a worse villain tho
51:00 I’ve met a couple centipedal poly monsters living in Bushwick
thanks for covering this game.
Jimmy is without a doubt one of the most despicable characters i've seen in video games. a narcissist, a coward who couldn't truly face who he was and what he did, and all around deserving of contempt.
Actually Curly could've put Jimmy in cryostasis - which can last for years and would cut down on supply shortage.
The captain is an enabler.
Even then, that would force everyone on the ship to get punished for that by Pony Express and lose their jobs.
Oh hell yeah, I was not expecting this!
Mouthwashing is indeed evil
- This comment was made by the Bad Breath Gang
You do realize IRL Tonic drinks, like schweppes or whatever, also contain quinine? Its what gives it the bitter flavor.
