How to recognize a mole from melanoma
As we all know, skin health is incredibly important and can affect our overall well-being. One of the ways to ensure good skin health is by regularly checking for any unusual moles on our body that could potentially be a sign of melanoma.
So, what exactly is melanoma? It is a type of skin cancer that develops in the cells that produce pigment in our skin, known as melanocytes. This type of cancer can often appear as an unusual mole or growth on the surface of the skin.
But how do we differentiate between a regular mole and one that could potentially be dangerous? Gyorgy Paragh, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Oncology, Chair, Department of Dermatology provides some key features to look out for when examining your moles. These include asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation, diameter larger than 6mm, and evolution or change in size, shape or color.
It is also important to note that while these features may indicate a potentially dangerous mole, they are not definitive signs of melanoma. If you notice any of these characteristics on a mole or growth on your body, it is always best to consult with a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
In addition to regular self-examination of moles on our skin, it is also imperative to protect ourselves from harmful UV rays that can increase the risk of developing melanoma. This includes wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30, avoiding prolonged sun exposure during peak hours and using protective clothing such as hats and long-sleeved shirts.
Early detection is key in successfully treating melanoma. So remember to keep an eye on any changes in size, shape or color of your moles and consult with a professional if you have any concerns.
