It’s surprising how much more you enjoy a piece of music when you’re given an introduction to it. Thank you Sarah for sharing. I really enjoyed all the pieces.
Thank you, really enjoyed the introduction and the pieces. It must be fantastic playing in a group like this! Belated congratulations on the birth of your daughter
Welcome back Sarah. Your intervening "pre-recorded" videos were a lot of fun and useful. Excellent planning on your part to allow yourself some much needed time - and congratulations on daughter! Thank you for the links here especially to Consort Counsellors...
Congratulations to the baby and her parents! It must be wonderful to grow up between all these recorders and with a mother who knows how to handle them the way you do. The music snippets in this video are so incredibly beautiful - wish I could have been at the concert. This kind of music is the reason why I started to take recorder lessons.
Hi Sarah, I'm so glad to see you again happy and healthy :-) (although with somewhat sleep-lacking eyes, but maybe I'm mistaken?) The music you present here is wonderful. I'm getting the CD now!
Thank you Sarah , it’s so good to see you back and what an amazing ensemble. It helps so much to have some introductory explanation of the music. I bet it’s incredible to be part of a big, professional ensemble. I find it incredible that everyone has memorised their parts. A tutorial on memorisation would be great. I really struggle to learn to play anything without music in front of me! Sarah
Sarah's done a video on memorisation already, have you forgotton? haha "Tutorial: HOW TO MEMORIZE / PLAY BY HEART" ua-cam.com/video/YehnHIPisC0/v-deo.html
The Consort Counsellors also just released a video with tips to help you memorize ensemble music:) Episode 13: 10 tips to memorise music ua-cam.com/video/2jf2bZvd2qM/v-deo.html Enjoy!
For all you Team Recorder viewers, after listening to Professor Sarah’s enlightening lecture, for subsequent viewing of this entertaining video, you can fast track to the snippets of the "The Royal Wind Music" recorder ensemble beginning at 0:574:447:078:19 and 9:47 😊 🎼 ♫
Could you do a video lesson on exercises for the notes Eb (6-) and Db (7-) on the baroque soprano flute? For example: First pentachord of Cm Aeolian or Phrygian. I am very grateful for your guidance.
Love the Royal Wind Music, and have been persuaded to buy a CD, the first I have bought for a long time. I hadn't realised that renaissance recorders could sound so beautiful. Many thanks for that. BTW - it's "tessitura".
Thank you Sarah. I really loved that last piece you said was an Encore from your concert. I only wish it was longer, . I love the lively tempo, and bright spirit of the piece. P.S. Which one are you in the group? the frame is too small to pick out individual faces, except for those I know. I recognize, Maria, Stephanie Brandt and Hester Groenleer, but can't recognize anyone else.
Hi Charles! We do play it as an encore, but also in its full version during the programme, which is about four times longer! It's a really fun arrangement :) In the group I have long blonde hair and a black jumpsuit on (hard to see I know!) In 'De Wert' I am over on the right, playing the C bass recorder, for example, and in 'Froberger' I'm in the middle playing F basset, and in 'Willaert' I'm in the middle playing tenor. And ah Stephanie isn't in this video - I wonder who looks like her!
You are also my own chiropractor, yoga teacher and physical therapist. I got an Adris Dream alto and I always got squeaks on only 2 notes--legatto from hi g to hi a. I checked my fingers and air and hit my head with the pearwood head joint a few times Then I straightened posture and the devil was a crooked jaw, mouth and lips pushing air to the sides of the air way Now I'm squeakless I'm an ex squeaker Squeaks begone Thank you for the 'How to hold' video
Hey Sarah! I really love your videos! I have a question, how can you get a smooth transition between E and F, and also B and C on a soprano recorder when playing legato ?
B and C is just a matter of fingering. Instead of B=0 1 play B=0 2 3, then for the C you only have to lift up finger 3. For the E and F, it's the curse of us recorder players...
Thank you for sharing. Those were wonderful clips. Question - can everyone in the Royal Wind Music play any of the recorders, or do you all specialize in one/couple/several?
All members of RWM can play any of the recorders. For some players, the large instruments are difficult because of the stretch required to cover the finger holes, especially of the left hand. In that sense, yes, there are a few players with a special affinity to certain instruments, like the sub-contrabass!
Exactly! I unfortunately cannot stretch to the 3 meter tall subcontrabass.. (it’s my left hand ring finger that’s the culprit) but the rest I can! Though height isn’t a measure of stretch- some of our shortest members of masters of the biggest instruments! 💪🏼
That was beautiful! thankyou for showing us your performance! :) xx Do you alot of the same recorders in these types of performances or do you swap about quite abit?
Hi Noam! We mostly perform 16th and early 17th century music, although sometimes we arrange earlier and later repertoire as well. Our setting does not aim to "reconstruct" the practice of consort playing in the Renaissance and in that sense we allow ourselves some liberties, like playing Bach on Renaissance recorders or combining recorder sizes that would probably not have been played together in the past. We do have great respect for the aesthetics, structure and content of this music and hope to "translate" it meaningfully for contemporary ears! Thanks for your interest!
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder yeah you wouldn’t want to finish a perfect cadence by singing an obnoxious UUUUUUUUUT on the tonic, so over the years “do” was used instead because it just sounds so much nicer :)
Very nice sampling of the group's repertoire, played beautifully! However, I would like to offer a sincere prayer to the current Grand High Poo-bahs of University recorder pedagogy: "Oh Great Teachers de Blokfluit (yes, you, Nederlanders...) please deign to save us all in the audience from the pestilence of watching recorder players doing that extremely distracting and excessive open-mouth nibbling at the beak as an articulation technique. Amen." And while I'm still in reverent prayer: "Tell them that they're making us all dizzy out here in the dark when they're making giant circles with their instruments. Amen, again."
Thank you. The pieces do give an impression of a church organ, but if it would have had a normal clear articulation - not that muddy unified overlapping tones sounding both grandly and mechanically.
It’s surprising how much more you enjoy a piece of music when you’re given an introduction to it. Thank you Sarah for sharing. I really enjoyed all the pieces.
Beautiful. Must see Royal Wind Music live one day.
Just magic! Love the voices with the recorders so beautiful
All those recorders playing together sounds just like a church organ.
Randall Hill well, that's what an organ is - choruses of flutes and oboes. : )
right on the spot!
Pretty sure a church organ is less expensive lol
Thank you, really enjoyed the introduction and the pieces. It must be fantastic playing in a group like this! Belated congratulations on the birth of your daughter
Oh my word. Serious thrills going on in my body as I listen to these little snippets of performance. Gorgeous!
Congratulations on the new addition to your family. The consort performance was marvelous. Bravo!

A perfect match - the voices an the recorders! Absolutely lovely!
Congratulations! I remember having a young family was a really happy time. I hope it is for you, too.
Thank you SO much. I learn something new every. single. day.
Sarah, loved this video! Transcending music, thank you!!
Not surprising it sounds like an organ, given the big wooden wind pipes, when you think about it. Amazing!
Hi Sarah, I'm so glad to see you again happy and healthy :-) (although with somewhat sleep-lacking eyes, but maybe I'm mistaken?) The music you present here is wonderful. I'm getting the CD now!
Haha, very sleep lacking! 😅 Enjoy the cd!

Great that you bought the CD! 😄
(ahhhh I thought I spelled it wrong! buaaaa)
@@Team_Recorder and pronounced it wrong! It's okay though, we all make mistakes!
Congratulations ! And thank you for sharing these beautiful clips! Here in Cape Town your friend Susan is teaching us ensemble playing!
Ah wonderful! Greetings to Susan! 💜

GREAT MUSIC!
This is beautiful!

Awwwww great!!!!
Thks AdrisDream is a beautiful recorder but unforgiving I must play in perfect position
And whilst playing notes that use several fingers of both hands--All fingers must open and close TOGETHER. No 'slackers'
Bravo!
Beautiful!!!
Congratulations!! :)
Hi,Sarah :) I have a question maybe it sounds silly but what's the difference between renaissance and medieval music??? Music wise I mean...
Aaaaaa I did a uni module about renaissance music and I understand all the things
Lovely sound. You would really miss the sub-contra bass if it wasn't there!
Congratulations,
Hey Sarah! I really love your videos! I have a question, how can you get a smooth transition between E and F, and also B and C on a soprano recorder when playing legato ?

😅💪🏼
That was beautiful! thankyou for showing us your performance! :) xx Do you alot of the same recorders in these types of performances or do you swap about quite abit?
Hello Sarah! Is the Royal Wind Music plays onlly renaissance repertoire? Thanks! :)))

Thank you very much Sarah! You make a great service for the Recorders and the Music world! :))
ah! congratulations sensei
are you dutch?
I can’t find the links to buy the cd. Help!
It's in the video description! But here again: royalwindmusic.ecwid.com/
Haha nice to see my own face hiding behind the F-bass in the pictures. 😊
😄😄
God save The Queen!
Hello Sarah and welcome back! Once again congratulations for the baby :)
A small typo in the video, it's "tessitura", not "tessiAtura"
Ah! I always stick extra syllables in things, like ‘eng-a-land’ 😣
Fun fact: “ut” got changed to “do” because it is an easier more open vowel sound to sing
I ALWAYS WONDERED WHY THAT WAS THANK YOUUU
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder yeah you wouldn’t want to finish a perfect cadence by singing an obnoxious UUUUUUUUUT on the tonic, so over the years “do” was used instead because it just sounds so much nicer :)
very interesting
Wish i could preform with the ansamble
The recorder ensemble is like a cheap in material but labor intensive pipe organ.
Which one were you, Sarah?
7th from left, playing a C bass!
@@Team_Recorder Thank you. That's also called the great bass. One octave below the tenor, right?
What is her name?
The music itself starts at 4.40
8:19
4:44
Willaert was late Renaissance, not medieval. Just so your audience knows.
Wait, she was born?!?
Yes, 8 weeks ago now 😉
Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder congratulations Serah!
I want you to play for song to me, can you play..?
Congrats! Im new so idk whats happening
There is no 'a' in the word 'Tessitura'- at least in English, Italian, and French. Just sayin'.....
Love the mind. The lipstick needs help
Please can we see the baby?
