Maybe it's because it features in Die Hard, Neon Genesis and A Clockwork Orange but I associate it with the phrase "a terrible beauty is born", namely an apocalyptic event like you describe but glorious. It definitely creates a cognitive dissonance in that it's "chirpy" joyful music but there's a force in it that's overwhelming which suggests something cataclysmic. Uneasiness + exhilaration for me listening to this.
I love how the scene of Kaworu opening Heaven's door matches with the lyric "and the cherub stands before God", "cherub" being another word for "angel"...
@@d.a.g.c961 That's a common misconception. The small child-like angels depicted in Renaissance art were later confused with Cherubim. But in biblical tradition, Cherubim are generally considered the second highest class of angels after the Seraphim (and the second closest to God). They are said to be four-winged animalistic creatures that move like lightning. and represent "fullness of knowledge". Quite a bit more formidable than the usual modern depiction.
12:42 In the context of the series, the situation is critical and disturbing; a young boy who's a very nice person, happens to actually be an angel that manages to go further than any other angel has achived to reach within NERV's HQ; everyone is confused and suddenly anxious because of the unexpected and extremely dangerous betrayal, and for Shinji it's even worse; his only friend is now an enemy that has to be killed by all means, and even Kaworu himself asks him to get killed by him. Being given all this information, you would expect a fiting melody for such an event, right? Well, while all this transtorned tragedy is taking place, a classic melody known as "Ode to Joy" starts playing, and because of how anticlimatic it is for the situation, it _does_ slap harder than any dark music they could have chosen for this scene; Imagine that you are *very* depressed, and then, a hopeful song starts playing while your entire life is being teared apart: That's you going insane.
everyone is going off about how dreadfully long this scene was, but I don't even remember it being long at all. Maybe it's because I love Kaworu so much I'm just entranced every time he's on screen.
To me, Evangelion has the most realistic optimistic ending. None of that "power of friendship" bullshit. Plain and simple: any place can be paradise so long as you have the will and determination to make it so. It will not be easy and you will need to work and want it badly enough to make it so, but it is possible. I wish more media embraced the portrayal of positive nihilism rather than the edgy negative nihilism that we see most of the time.
@@evagineer9165 Negative nihilism is the idea that "ugh, nothing matters, so why even bother or try with anything? Fuck it all." Where as positive nihilism is, "nothing matters or has no predetermined plan or goal, so try everything and do everything. The world is what you make of it."
Memes aside, I actually really like this scene. It’s actually my favorite moment out of the entire series from a character analysis standpoint. Having a still frame is a representation of Shinji’s inner conflict and struggle with having to come to terms with Kawrou, the only person who has shown him true affection/love, being an Angel and having to kill him. This part is done pretty well in the Manga as well, but I like the way it was done in the Anime way better. Sometimes less is More
Thank you. I really appreciate it when people can be serious about this show at least sometimes. Jokes are fine and all but irony poisoning is a real thing people don't seem to realize.

After looking up the actual lyrics for "Ode to joy", also finding out it's the anthem of the European Union, found that the lyrics fit ALMOST perfectly with the end of Evangelion,just take a look at the (translated) last two lines: Gladly, As His heavenly bodies fly On their courses through the heavens, Thus, brothers, you should run your race, As a hero going to conquest. You millions, I embrace you. This kiss is for all the world! Brothers, above the starry canopy There must dwell a loving Father. Do you fall in worship, you millions? World, do you know your creator? Seek him in the heavens; Above the stars must He dwell. fricken sp00ky m8, but it really fits well with the scene
What? I don't know where you looked this up, but this is not the correct translation of the song. You can find the first part roughly in a later verse but the second part is definitely not in thís piece. I'm from Germany... I should know this.
Daughter of Elysium, Fire-inspired we tread Thy sanctuary. Thy magic power re-unites All that custom has divided, All men become brothers Under the sway of thy gentle wings. Whoever has created An abiding friendship, Or has won A true and loving wife, All who can call at least one soul theirs, Join in our song of praise; But any who cannot must creep tearfully Away from our circle. All creatures drink of joy At nature's breast. Just and unjust Alike taste of her gift; She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine, A tried friend to the end. Even the worm can feel contentment, And the cherub stands before God! Gladly, like the heavenly bodies Which He set on their courses Through the splendor of the firmament; Thus, brothers, you should run your race, As a hero going to conquest. You millions, I embrace you. This kiss is for all the world! Brothers, above the starry canopy There must dwell a loving Father. Do you fall in worship, you millions? World, do you know your creator? Seek him in the heavens; Above the stars must He dwell.
@@oggynator5183 The second part starts at 13:55, and the translation is pretty accurate, although „So you fall in worship, you millions?“ would probably capture the German meaning better than „Do you fall in worship, you millions“.
I weeped so badly listening to this piece just now, especially when I reminded myself the fact that Beethoven was deaf when he wrote this piece - his optimism, passion and what fate had hurled at him...
@yellowpete79 beethoven was not born a genius, it took hard work to become what he was. imagine the countless agonizing hours he must've spent ready to give up but continuing anyway, completely deaf beethoven's story is an inspiration to creative minds everywhere
Anno and his team really know how to use the medium. This scene worked because it was animated--it's the rigidity and illegibility of the Eva's posture and expression that allows us to feel Shinji's turmoil. It's the Kuleshov Effect in excelsis! If we saw any breathing, any twitching, any shifting, we'd focus on that instead, but stillness--absolute stillness--traps us in the entry plug with Shinji. It's genuinely one of the most breathtaking shots I've seen in any medium, up there with Jupiter backlit by the sun in 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Writer, the Scientist, and the Stalker sitting in the rain in Tarkovsky's Stalker.
The First time I watched this, I thought my Netflix app had glitched lmao. I turned out to like the series so much, I actually forked out the money to buy the extremely out of print DVDs of both the series and the movies. Evangelion isn’t perfect, but it’s a lot better than most anime that is being made now.
Probably just an Eva hater. They're out there. I can't imagine another reason anyone could thumb this down. Unless they have absolutely horrible taste.
This is bone-chilling to hear, especially after watching Episode 24, as it not only sets the stage for "End of Evangelion", but also represents Shinji's last link to the hope, optimism and reassurance of his life. Once he kills Kaworu in that episode, he breaks that link and thus his will to live.
I remember I was in shock when I saw Kaworu's head falling into the LCL, It took me a while to process everything and then I started crying, and now I'm here. Since that,everytime I hear ode to joy I feel sad... "Maybe death is the only and absolute freedom"
You are not alone. Evangelion has been very emotional for many people, myself included. There's a couple of parts in it that I always cry at. I recommend doing a lot of reading on the Evageeks website once you've seen the whole series and all the movies. There are some different ways of translating parts of the show that can be important to look into. You're doing a great job. Watching Eva is very important. Have a great day!! 💗

I love how the scene of Kaworu opening Heaven's door matches with the lyric "and the cherub stands before God", "cherub" being another word for "angel"...
Litle Ángel right?
Cherub is not at all angel, thank you for this comment. Cherubs are the closest angels to God.
I thought I was the only one who noticed that!
And he stands before Lilith, a god-like being who created humanity.
Well, while all this transtorned tragedy is taking place, a classic melody known as "Ode to Joy" starts playing, and because of how anticlimatic it is for the situation, it _does_ slap harder than any dark music they could have chosen for this scene; Imagine that you are *very* depressed, and then, a hopeful song starts playing while your entire life is being teared apart:

To me, Evangelion has the most realistic optimistic ending. None of that "power of friendship" bullshit.
Plain and simple: any place can be paradise so long as you have the will and determination to make it so. It will not be easy and you will need to work and want it badly enough to make it so, but it is possible.

After looking up the actual lyrics for "Ode to joy", also finding out it's the anthem of the European Union, found that the lyrics fit ALMOST perfectly with the end of Evangelion,just take a look at the (translated) last two lines:
Gladly,
As His heavenly bodies fly
On their courses through the heavens,
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.
You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek him in the heavens;
Above the stars must He dwell.
fricken sp00ky m8, but it really fits well with the scene
What? I don't know where you looked this up, but this is not the correct translation of the song. You can find the first part roughly in a later verse but the second part is definitely not in thís piece. I'm from Germany... I should know this.
Im pretty sure you're missing more than one half of the entire movement...
Daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread
Thy sanctuary.
Thy magic power re-unites
All that custom has divided,
All men become brothers
Under the sway of thy gentle wings.
Whoever has created
An abiding friendship,
Or has won
A true and loving wife,
All who can call at least one soul theirs,
Join in our song of praise;
But any who cannot must creep tearfully
Away from our circle.
All creatures drink of joy
At nature's breast.
Just and unjust
Alike taste of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!
Gladly, like the heavenly bodies
Which He set on their courses
Through the splendor of the firmament;
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.
You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek him in the heavens;
Above the stars must He dwell.
yes, Schillers Ode to joy is fucking Third Impact definition lol!
@@oggynator5183 The second part starts at 13:55, and the translation is pretty accurate, although „So you fall in worship, you millions?“ would probably capture the German meaning better than „Do you fall in worship, you millions“.

This is bone-chilling to hear, especially after watching Episode 24, as it not only sets the stage for "End of Evangelion", but also represents Shinji's last link to the hope, optimism and reassurance of his life. Once he kills Kaworu in that episode, he breaks that link and thus his will to live.
