I have a little notebook with mustaches on it that I use to record my practice lol. I typically write when I start practicing and when I end (I usually have 2 or 3 practice sessions in a day), and at the end of the day I write a little recap about what I worked on. It's interesting to be able to look back a few months later and see what I was working on then compared to what I'm working on now. In terms of what I practice, I usually divide my time into bow technique (I'm really working on improving my bow arm/hand, because it's not as flexible/loose as I would like it to be) and scales that are relevant to what I'm playing, personal repertoire, and orchestral music!
That is so cool @emFeher ! I love the mustaches lol, gotta keep things fun and cute through this process. My bow arm is also something that I had started to pay attention to later on. I worked so hard on the left hand that completely ignored the bow. Now I’m working a lot on spicatto, it’s like my enemy, hopefully soon I’ll be able to play all spicatto excerpts flawlessly. Uhhhhh
It means so much to hear this!!! Thank you thank you ❤ ! I think this channel is growing slowly only because it constantly attracts the best people 🥹🫶🏼 Welcome to this cute community!
@@tavifagascon I am not a professional music student, I quit violin in the 7th grade. Since then I’ve been self studying music. Mostly in theory but I hope to employ better practice habits. I switched my instrument to the mandolin even though I’ll probably get my violin to a luthier soon so it’s playable again. I am also a new college student at 32! So I am trying to structure my day like a college music student.
@@Hvgmusings this sounds amazing! I’m happy that you let music be part of your life back again but on your own terms! That’s like the healthiest way!!! Time passes by anyway, we might as well invest in ourselves as much as we can 🫶🏼 congrats on being back in school, it is lovely to have help with structuring the school year and school does that so well 🥹
This was a great video! My general practice routine has changed a lot over the past few years. My primary instrument is violin but I also actively teach and study guitar, so I switch back and forth and practice both. Most times I spend about a half hour to an hour and a half of practicing a day. Here’s my basic routine: A bit of warm up: usually vibrato practice, scale work, bow work, and a bit of specific left hand technique work on hand frame. Concerto: right now I’m working on the Mendelssohn and the main focus is the cadenza, I’ve been working my way through the first movement with my teacher. She made me a backing track with the harmonies for the cadenza so I can practice the arpeggios along to the harmonic progression which is very effective. Bach: I’m working on the Gigue from the d minor partita, deciding on fingerings and working on consistent hand frame and intonation. Orchestra: I just started playing in a community orchestra a couple of weeks ago, and we have a concert coming up mid May, so I’m working super hard on knowing the music the best I can. After the season is over, I will probably use this time to work on excerpts or maybe sight read common works just to get better at ensemble playing since I love playing in the orchestra. I’m working on deciding which etude to add to this routine as well. As for guitar, that portion of the practice looks really different. I’m working specifically on fundamental internal pulse, so I’m doing body percussion to a metronome with disappearing beats (1 measure on, 1 measure off) to work on rhythm, and then I’m working on my picking technique, and I’m working on improvising melodies between chords. All facets of this routine help me get better at the other things. So my internal pulse practice has made me better at rhythm, which in turn makes me more comfortable during orchestra rehearsal, and is making my concerto better, etc. I use to hate practicing but I’m starting to wish I had more time, but being a full time teacher and teaching privately in addition to that keeps me busy enough I don’t have any more time than what I’m doing right now.
This is so awesome! I absolutely love hearing how many pieces/exercises you’re working on. Thank you for writing. The Bach you mentioned is so beautiful! Same with the cadenza of Mendelssohn. But these are such difficult pieces, it is probably so much fun to get to experience it getting better and better. Congrats on getting to play in an orchestra - it is such a joy to create music with other people! Good luck on your concert!

Yes!! I have thought of filming a video of only my usual warm up routine: all scales + all arpeggios, and I will attach two PDF files to the video for anyone to download or play along with. So far the files for scales look very messy because I adjusted some fingerings 😢. And the arpeggios one is just numbers instead of also having notes attached to it. So I’d love to edit both of those things first, then share it with people 🥹.
@@tavifagascon omg hope you done it soon because I just entered college and I'm one who don't usually practice scales but now our exam includes scales and too lazy to think about those fingerings hahaha
