That definitely WAS the bass. Entwistle's settings were fairly simple: full bass, full treble, full volume. He quite often sounds like a bass and a guitar in unison. Monstrous tone.
Hey guys, yep, it's the bass. Saw The Who live in Amsterdam in 1972,and in Rotterdam in 1975. Never heard a louder bass guitar till this day. Rotterdam concert was basicly a rithme section concert, John Entwistle playing extremely loud, Keith Moon joined the party, Roger smiling all the time and singing his head off. Pete didn't even try to keep up on the volume. One of the best concerts I've ever heard, and saw of course. Great reaction, thanks and cheers from the Netherlands.
Yes I was there 🤩 I was 19, visiting friends in the south of England and we decided to go over there on Saturday on a whim, no real plan who we were going to see. We missed Hendrix (he appeared on Sunday but we'd left by then as I had a train to catch) but did see The Who who went on at 2am and absolutely killed it, they were great. I didn't see any sound towers, pretty sure there were none but it's a long time ago. The one thing I'm sure about was that the crowd was HUGE, seemed to go on for miles, and every single one of them was stoned. There was so much weed being smoked that you could get high just sitting there!
The joy of watching the Who is infectious!! So glad to see you gents experiencing this. I will add my agreement that you will be blown away by Young Man Blues at this same show. Do it!!!!
As a drummer and a huge Moon fan his drumming is not as chaotic as it sounds. He plays along with the guitar and Daltrey’s singing. It what’s more amazing if you listen to the Live at Leeds album from 1970 and then the Live at Hull album which was a few days after the Leeds gig, Moon plays the same songs but both gigs he plays them differently including the fills.
I believe Pete was more of the time keeper and Keith followed him, as strange as that sounds. That's def bass. John would split his outputs, high and low. He probably could toggle to a specific pickup to get just high end for that part. Pete has spoken at length to how much of the who sound was John.

I believe on the album Entwhistle played a French Horn for the bass sound you commented on.
As mentioned Young man blues will rock your socks off!

I also would like to add that Young man Blues at this concert is unF'ing believable. ya gotta do it!
The Who had their own PA system but it wasn’t loud enough for the size of the crowd and strong winds. Pink Floyd’s PA system was added to it

It is John's bass!!
I Don't Even Know Myself from IoW '70 - great song that gets omitted by reactors and excellent Mooncam!

No man!! The Best song of this concert is "young man blues" believe me, react to that song please
This was in very high winds. They used every amp and speaker they owned, supplemented by the Pink Floyd system.
Shout out Pink Floyd 👏
I never noticed it was the bass. Amazing.

Watch Young Man Blues from the same show. Absolutely awesome. Make sure it’s the 3 camera version though. Best one on UA-cam.
As well as "Young Man Blues", check out "Water" from the same show.

Keith Moon attacked songs aggressively, but there was always a reason to his madness. He didn't just play `to` a song. he made himself a part of it.
Tss tss...
"I play bass-guitar, not bass" (J. Entwistle)
