    I in the past year, I converted from Stihl to Echo. Not picking a fight, just sharing my story. I had a old Stihl 036 pro and a ms310. Both were good saws, and never had a problem. Bought my dad a MS 250, and he had starting issues, and when I looked for smaller saw for me, I decided to try a Echo CS 400, and WOW! What a great 40cc saw, starts great, cuts through larger stuff than what I should have put it in, and I was so impressed, I bought the CS590 Echo Timberwolf...........and holy crap! It smoked my larger Stihl saws in power and speed of cut. That saw is a beast. Starts easy. I sold both of my Stihls and my dad sold his and bought both a 400 and a 590 too. End of story.

    One thing that I have started doing is buying non-ethanol fuel. It helps a heap.

    • @EricRush
      @EricRush 5 років тому +12

      Non-ethanol is the key for smooth operation of all small engines. It got to where I could take apart the carbs on my saw, outboard motors, motor scooter, ATV, and generator and put them back together blindfolded. (Well, almost.) Switched to non-ethanol a few years ago and haven't touched a carb since, except to clear the high-speed jet on my Stihl exactly once.

    • @5_fun_facts123
      @5_fun_facts123 5 років тому +14

      You hit the nail on the head. That 10% ethanol in regular fuel is corrosive and ruins fuel systems if they sit for a long time.

    • @djangoapple8230
      @djangoapple8230 5 років тому +7

      Your gonna find out soon enough that non ethanol ain't enough. It's bad engineering. Here's the first sign of good quality going to shit: Think back to when anything of good quality started going down hill and what was directly associated with it. It's the introduction of good machinery into "Big Box Stores". Ace Hardware has just recently started carrying Stihl. Gone to shit. Just be mindful of other things that have and will take that path.

    • @3basketliving
      @3basketliving 5 років тому +5

      This is true for ALL small engines....no matter the equipment. That ethanol gums up everything.

    • @breeze787
      @breeze787 5 років тому +1

      That is so further from the truth you guys are all passing "bad" ethanol info. Gasoline all by itself can go bad. Gasoline doesn't need any help from ethanol to go bad because gasoline goes bad all by itself just by sitting there. I purchased my home in 2002 and everyone of my original small engines (Honda weed whacker, Honda riding lawn mowers, California trimmer, Ryobi blower, Troybilt shredder, Honda 20" lawn mower, Honda power washer, Ryobi rear tine tiller) carry left over gas through the winter period including the entire 15% of ethanol that supposedly wrecks your small engine equipment. In most cases I start all of the above with the 1st pull yeah including the Troybilt shredder with a Kohler engine. I stop using my lawn equipment for all of approximately 6 months from about November to and through to April or May and have not had any problems with any of my garden equipment where ethanol would be the culprit.
      You guys are getting your information anecdotally from other gasoline opinions here on youtube and none of them are true because they are like yours all made up. You guys don't know squat about ethanol and shame on your for blasting your mouth off and passing information not based on facts.

    He's right. Advoko Makes (Bushcraft UA-camr) was running two Stihl chainsaws and one broke, but the 20 year old one kept going. He contacted STIHL support and they said it was the gas/oil mixture to blame. When he told them he was using the same mixture on both his chainsaws and the 20 year old STIHL was working fine, they didn't have an answer. He took the newer, broken chainsaw apart and found the piece that was broken. It turns out that STIHL has outsourced some of their production to Qingdao, China.
    Yet another company takes the dive in quality by outsourcing to shoddy, slave-like labor in China to turn a quick buck. I'm done with STIHL.

    The heart of any chainsaw is the engine. The foundation that every chain saw engine is based on was developed by Sachs-Dolmar. Makita later bought out Dolmar. They made the best, using very high quality parts made to consistent tolerances. A good Sachs engine will last over 1200 hours and be brought back to life by just changing the piston ring and rebuilding the carb. Companies that have followed the Sachs engine design are Echo, Husky, Shindawa, and previously Stihl. Chinese chain saws often use engines of dubious to poor quality due to metallurgical and design alterations made to cut production costs. With regards to Stihl, I agree they are not making products as good as they used to be. I recently worked with a homeowner that got rid of his fairly new 20"Stihl because a 30 year old Echo 16" I brought back to life for him significantly out performed his Stihl.

    I don't care what brand saw you use, if you run fuel with ethanol you'll have trouble. Echo is a good saw but it's heavier than a Stihl pro saw. Stihl, like all companies has fallen into the trap of trying to sell to the entire market. Their cheaper saws carry the Stihl reputation and name recognition but they are ruining the brand rep by selling saws to meet price.

      I have run regular gas mix (ethanol included) in all of my saws and other 2 stroke engines for over 30 years with no problem. I have never had to rebuild a carb due to problems with gaskets or seals. I do use Sta-bil in all of my gas but nothing else. If anyone is making equipment today that can not tolerate ethanol, it is probably junk anyway.

    • @pyromedichd1
      @pyromedichd1 5 років тому

      @@halshaw3919 IF you run your saws often and use up the ethanol fuel in them so it doesn't sit for months in disuse you are far less likely to encounter the common problems with ethanol in fuel. Most problems come when ethanol fuels undergo phase separation which incorporates water in the fuel with the result of corrosion. Newer saws and equipment are made with rubber parts that better tolerate ethanol, but almost all rubber will eventually be affected by ethanol at some point in time. You may be fortunate to own newer equipment with parts that are more ethanol tolerant, however, may people own equipment that is still in good working order that is 30 years or more old. That equipment will be affected far more by ethanol in fuel. One argument that cannot be disputed, ethanol in fuel will undergo phase separation if left it sit long enough, with resulting associated problems to follow.

    I have stihl saws that I have used almost every day Monday through Friday for years. I only use stihl oil and premium fuel. No complaint as for last ability

      U dont buy pre mix?

      pancho villa
      I have found pre mix to be convenient but costly. So mixing fuel is really no problem, I would mix 20 litre’s each time. That would last about 2 weeks. I have a 460 made in Germany that l have been using for about 5 years with no issues. It’s a little heavy but it’s really a great workhorse

    EPA have changed the game so don't expect any saw to last the 25 to 40 years that they used to, every major manufacturer has been forced to re design their products thus leading to out sourcing components most of which are made in China even if they are assembled in Switzerland or Germany.
    Sadly it is all part of the throw away society we live in...
    One only has to look in the catalouges of the major manufacturers to see the fancy new names they give to dulled down versions of inadequate equipment... Like
    X TORQUE for example.. Which means highly restricted and regulated chainsaw.
    It is a sad day when to get the best you have to go with a clone made in China of an older model.........

    allot of people don't know about echo but I used to sell them and their equipment is leaps and bounds better than anything on the market. their engine tech is awesome they were able to stay away from catalytic converters while everyone else had to, to meet emissions.

    I've owned them all(almost). ALL the brands have their good models and their cheap models.

      That's correct. You can't honestly compare a professional grade chain saw to a homeowner grade, although both will cut wood. The pro saw will last longer & by design, is much easier to service than a homeowner type.0
