    Hats off to Zack, the first commenter to accurately label the Volt as an extended range EV; just like the BMW I3. To all the other auto mavens, the Volt is a hybrid - which is incorrect. The gas engine in the first generation Volt powers only the generator, which, of course, charges the battery. It's a brilliantly complex, reliable engineering masterpiece by GM. If only they could have figured out how to sell it. Barring catastrophe, I'll drive my 2015 until I'm forced to surrender my license. If you're in the used car market, be sure to consider any well cared for Volt --- but not mine. It's not for sale.

      The volt is actually capable of operating in either parallel or serial hybrid mode, and the engine is used to drive the wheels in certain operation scenarios after battery depletion. The engine is not exclusively connected to the generator. It isn't really like the i3 -- far more like a Prius with EV-only range, and much less parallel mode engine intervention.

    Yes, it really is a "gateway electric car." The Volt let's you learn how battery's behave without ever getting stuck or even experiencing range anxiety.

    10:18 Just a note the L in the P R N D L is not LOW. Driving in D the car coasts like a normal ICE vehicle, driving in L the car will apply regen braking anytime the accelerator isn't pressed. It isn't one pedal driving, the car won't come to a complete stop, but since I realized that's what L is I never use D.

    I was REALLY underwhelmed by this car until I saw it was a 2012 model. I wonder if the newer models are any better.

    "It's essentially a gateway drug to electric cars."
    Well said! Having that taste of owning an EV is like a drug. Once you experience it, you never want to go back!

    Just to explain the acceleration, the software limits torque at launch to prevent wheel spin, at about 25 mph, full torque is permitted for the rest of the acceleration up to 100+. Less powerful electric motors are allowed full torque at launch. Enjoy! Owner and driver of number of hybrid/plug-in vehicles.

    My Momma died in 2020, right when COVID-19 hit. I inherited her 2005 Toyota Prius. I drove it to Nokomis Beach in Florida, out in the sand to the boat ramp. Some old man screamed cuss words at me. I also have a 2011 Wrangler on 35's. I was like, what the heck is your problem? Driving my dead Momma's Prius, and I get cussed at.

    Does this car utilize the antifreeze from the internal combusted engine to a heater core for efficient climate control???

    The Volt does NEVER recharge the battery with the engine. The engine provides electricity for the motor, it doesn't idle. the battery can only be charged from an outlet, or if you happen to be going down a hill from very high elevation due to high amounts of regenerative breaking.

    • @davecolgan442
      @davecolgan442 11 місяців тому +2

      I owned a 2013 Volt for 6 years, 72,000 miles and live in Reno, lots of hills. You would have to define "recharge". If you were to turn on Mountain Mode and the battery was less than 50% full it would charge (recharge) the battery to 50%. If you were in Hold Mode with the battery at 75% and drove up a long steep grade (Grapevine) which would discharge the battery to some amount (50%) it would recharge (charge) the battery to 75%.

    Great video! Keep up the good content man. I think you should review more relevant cars to grow your channel faster, I subscribed at your CLK 550 video but after that I found myself not watching any videos until your Volt video. Maybe the GR Supra, M340i, a new CLA, GLA, GLB, that sort of stuff.

      chocolatewheelchair look at the subscriber to view count, he has 21k subscribers but averages ~400 views per video. What’s wrong with doing mainstream and relevant cars, and doing one of these once in a while? He needs to appease to more crowds or he’s wasting his time.

      @@vincentbittel4860 I think what chocolatewheelchair was trying to say was that I will review whatever I can get my hands on, which is true. I love all cars. I would love to review the cars you suggested, and I agree that filming more mainstream cars are beneficial, but I currently don't have a way to get those said cars. My goal for 2020 is to partner with more dealerships, so hopefully those cars will become available!

      Also you can look at the lifetime energy consumption scrn at the overall MPG to get an idea as to how much miles percentage wise were driven on gas vs the battery. I have two 2012 Volts(1 is mine other wife's) and we love them!

    • @directorjustin
      @directorjustin 4 роки тому

      The MyChevrolet app will show you the exact number of miles the car has been driven electrically only compared to the total miles on the odometer. I'm not sure if you can access it if you don't already own the car, since it has features like remote start and lock and unlock, but it would be worth checking out.

    • @toddbenfield6546
      @toddbenfield6546 3 роки тому

      You can see how many total gallons have been used. The car gets around 38 mpg on gas.
      Multiply the gallons x 38. That will get you close on the miles on the gas engine. That’s what I do👍
