Psalms 86:5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee./inspiration+Think of a grudge that you held on for a long time. Did you feel better from holding this grudge? Now think about this deeper: what if God held a grudge against us? Wow, how lucky we are that he forgives us for our sins! He leads by example, forgiving those of us that do exactly what he asks us not to do. We all should all be more forgiving, like God is to us. /prayer+ You sent your only son to the world to die so that we may be forgiven, merciful God. Forgive me, once again, for being too selfish and proud to not forgive those that trespass against me. I wish that I can sin less and ask for forgiveness and guidance when I need it. I thank you for sending your son to us, Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen..

Actually most times it's the main battery/generator that takes up the most of the cars length size. It's shaped like a giant T with 3 separate components which include the battery and generator which allows the battery to self charge given certain conditions and another component which i forget what it does (taking it out the car is nearly 4-5 hour job and the whole thing costs $3,000 the Generator). Most of the volts that came to the dealership had zero problems even with the shitty AC delco batteries coming from factory since bought never replaced. But some where given the dreaded "Service battery charging system" which in most cases involved the main battery to be re programmed and/or charging it thru a special tool dealerships have. And very rare cases of the regular car battery in the trunk going bad due to bad cell(s) and needing to be replaced. I actually get one too but the '13-'15 year since the new generation volts the'15-newer have too many frequent problems...and sadly right out the factory too.

Having been an owner for 2 years and following the main Volt forums online, the main propulsion batteries have not been a source of many problems. Odd behavior that is suddenly cured by attaching a jump battery to the jump points under the hood most definitely point to the 12 volt battery which can be easily replaced.
Other Volt owners commenting on this thread and talking about RCR's review have mentioned the same thing. Any car with a 12 volt battery going on 4 to 5 years is getting close to it's reliable service life. I have a Honda Odyssey that does all sorts of odd electrical things when its 12 volt battery was starting to go bad.
There have been isolated incidents where the main propulsion battery have had to be replaced. Other causes of the Service battery messages are low coolant levels that require a top off and a reset at the dealer.

I suspect that this StabiliTrak® code may have actually been thrown because of a sketchy/depleted 12v system battery. These hybrids and electric cars have two electrical systems, the high-voltage system (which operates the traction motor and sometimes the HVAC) and the 12v system which works the same was as that in an ICE car, except instead of an alternator it is charged by a DC-DC buck converter from the high-voltage system. When the car first turns on, the 12v system provides power to boot up the computers before the high-voltage system is turned on, so an issue with the 12v system can prevent the car from "starting" just like in an ICE car. The only difference is that in an ICE car, you can tell when the battery is getting sketchy because it will often crank more slowly before it fails to start entirely. In this kind of car, the problem sneaks up on you. This happened to me with my Nissan Leaf, and it also threw a bunch of random trouble codes when it failed to start.

When the 12V battery on a normal car goes bad, the car doesn't start. When the 12V battery in the Volt goes bad, it'll throw weird codes when the computers freak out. All that guy needs is a new 12V battery. (Yes, EV's still have 12V lead-acid batteries)
Also at 7:32, Mountain Mode will cause the ICE to recharge the battery to at least 40%. The ICE by itself cannot power the Volt at high speeds up steep grades for very long, it needs assistance from the electric motors, which of course means they need a charged battery. The Volt will always regenerate power when going down-hill.

The Chevy Volt is the only car I've ever driven that I was blown away while it was sitting still at a red light. The car is really quiet. And I mean REALLY quiet. I test drove one of these things when they were first on the market and I loved every minute of SITTING STILL in this car. It's dead at the lights. It burns no fuel, wastes no electricity. I've driven a Prius C before as well and there's just no comparison. Of course the price points are totally different for the two cars but I could actually see myself owning a Volt.

    • @snopesman
      @snopesman 7 років тому +13

I got my Volt last year. My dad had the same reaction as you when he drove it. "This car is totally quiet". He was absolutely flabbergasted. There's also only one forward gear, so the power just happens all the way from standstill to highway speed. There's no waiting for turbo spool, no waiting for a kickdown, no dropping a gear manually when you want to speed up. It just starts speeding up.

Car cost 12k, warranty cost 3k over the life of the vehicle. They tried like hell to get me to side-grade, but I told them to upgrade me or fix the car they sold me. In the end, it cost them 15k to fix the car by putting in a brand new battery pack.

Time to get a new 12v battery (located in the trunk). Whenever the 12v battery starts to die hybrids (and even full EVs, Tesla, Leaf, etc...) can start to behave strangely. The 12v is used to close high voltage relays on the traction battery along with powering ancillary electronics.

Had one for 8 months. Put 10k on the car, and then, at 108,000 miles the transmission went out on the freeway. The dealership quoted me $6,400 to fix it. I said no way and bought a used transmission from a place called LKQ. The first transmission LKQ sent was damaged, leaking fluid and not usable. They exchanged the transmission, and the 2nd one arrived. The 2nd transmission was damaged as well, the idiots that salvaged it cut all of the orange cables off the transmission rendering it useless. I am now waiting for the 3rd transmission to come and have not been refunded my money by the shady LKQ company yet. Complete disaster, no warning, and very difficult to fix.

@MrJstew0903 I drove it until last year when it finally died completely. It ended up having 270,000 miles on it. Overall, it is a great car. Safe, nice heavy doors, you feel secure to the road and it drives like a go-kart when in electric mode. It has trouble with steep hills and you need to put it in "mountain mode" 20-30 minutes before you try to drive up any mountains (or you can hold the charge, that works as well). If it runs out of electric change and you have to drive up steep roads it can tell you 'propulsion power reduced' and it basically loses all power. The volt only takes 91 octane gasoline and synthetic oil. It doesn't have a spare tire. If your son is using it around town and for small trips the car is amazing! Long road trips are fine as well, just plan ahead for mountain areas and hold the battery charge. I bought a spare tire for it since it was my commuter.

I was originally excited when the concept Volt looked like a Camaro, then let down when the production car looked like the result of a drunken tryst of a Cruze and Prius. I am not sure which car would be the "top" and which would be the "bottom" in that scenario...

    • @WafflePlaneRC
      @WafflePlaneRC 7 років тому +14

My guess is that prius would be bottom, it lacks the power to be a top. Not that Cruze would do a good job at it, but considering that both are ugly virigns, that's to be expected

I've gotta be honest, I had to google what the concept of the Volt looked like. It's fucking *_hideous._* I think the end result came out much _much_ better looking. But that's just me. I thought, "Finally! Here's an electric car that looks like a fucking car!" But I was wrong. It's more like a diesel electric, an "Extended Range Electric Vehicle" or EEV. Pretty much a hybrid avoiding and dodging the name hybrid. And the Tesla is an electric car that looks like a car, except no average joe can afford one. Then again, the Volt is fuckin' expensive last time I looked it up too.

That generator powers the electric motors that are attached to the wheels. The best design for a hybrid still today is this car. It's Superior to a Prius mechanically engineering wise and so on.

I am an AAA Roadside tech.
I can tell you right now that the reason the car "bricked itself" and threw codes is because the voltage of the main automotive car battery was too low when trying to start the car (it's in the trunk under some covers). He probably had the original battery in the car (normal battery life is 3-5 years) and the car being left on while shooting drained it down (which happens much much faster the older the battery is).
The Prius will do the same thing. If the battery voltage is low it will actually sometimes tell you the there is a transmission problem and to park the car.
Low voltage can cause all kinds of issues on these newer car computers.
Ever tried jumping a newer Dodge Journey with the ETC in it? Pretty much every single time the ETC fails, it won't let you go over like 15 mph, and the engine is misfiring horribly. Start it with a fully charged battery and it's magically fine.

I just looked into it. 2017 Chevy Volt has a 420 mile range total, 17 Prius Prime has 640. Volt gets 42MPG (electric + gas combined), Prius Prime gets 54. Yes, the Volt can do full electric for 53 miles now, and the Prime can only do 25. Prius Prime also has nearly double the cargo volume. The advanced safety features are standard on the Prime and optional on the Volt. And the Prime weighs 200 lbs less. But the Volt is also $7,000 more expensive ($27k vs $34k) which is a big chunk of change.

Mountain mode doesn't charge just when going downhill; rather, it charges when the battery has a little less than 15 miles of range. Also, the ~90% / ~10% limit on battery is not a safety measure in case you run out of gas and electric. That would explain only half of that buffer. Rather, filling or discharging a lithium battery completely causes degredation. The buffer makes the battery last much longer.

So as a family member with a volt, drive it on D if you want a smooth deceleration. L to regenerate is fairly strong, many people use it to stop instead of brakes which drastically increases brake lifespan. Also the battery may need changing with that problem.

    Kia Credos
    Overview
    *Also called: Kia Clarus (Europe)*
, Kia Parktown (South Korea, station wagon)
    Production 1995-2001
    Assembly: Hwasung, South Korea
    Class: Mid-size car
    Body style: 4-door sedan
    , 5-door wagon
    Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive
    Related: Mazda 626
    , Kia Sedona
    Transmissions: 5-speed manual
    , 4-speed automatic
The Kia Credos was Kia's first self-developed mid-size sedan, which went on sale in South Korea in '95, and Australia in '98. The Credos is based on the 5th generation Mazda 626.
It was powered by 1 of 4 gas engines. Initially, 3 were offered, depending on trim, a 1.8L Kia T8D engine, a 2.0L Mazda FE SOHC engine, and a 2.0L Mazda FE-DOHC engine. A 4th engine, a licensed version of the 2.0 liter DOHC Rover KV6 engine, was available from '98 on. In Australia, the Credos was introduced in May '98, and was available only with the 2.0L engine (no, Wikipedia does not specify which 2.0L). Sales totaled 839 units during the model's 3-year run. The Kia Credos was replaced by the Hyundai-sourced Optima in September 2000, ending a badge-engineering relationship with Mazda.
You're welcome to anyone else who was confused by what Mr. Regular meant by "Kia Clarus", like me.

This car is cool because the engine is never driving the wheels. The engine just drives a generator that charges the battery, so it can operate at it's peak efficiency and store whatever excess energy is generated. That means even though the engine only makes 84hp, you still get 149hp even when you run out of electric only range.

Take note. Gen 1 Volts are NOT hybrids but are (as GM accurately published) an extended range electric car. The gas engine powers a generator (one of two electric motors) which in turn feed current to the (guess) batteries. It never directly powers the car. If it did, it would classify as a hybrid, like a Prius. Therefore, the Gen 1 volt is an EV.

I have a 2012 Volt and have had it for a little over 4 years. I have pretty minimal complaints and it's been pretty reliable. I did have an issue with it not charging which was because of a software error they resolved and something about the battery coolant sensor in older models. That was a nightmare becaues the dearlership tried to fuck me because they bricked my system with the update and then wanted to charge me 1200 dollars to replace the Hybrid-Powetrain Control Module. Luckily, they were able to get the upgrade. I also had the driver-side window motor die a month after I bought the car. Additionally, I've had an issue with propulsion loss when in mountains or high elevation terrain. That gets really annoying.
Besides those issues, the car has been great. I was fascinated by the technology of the volt and I liked the aesthetics of the car. The touch-screen control system on the console is a tad clunky, but overall I've found it to be an excellent and reliable car that saves me money on gas. And that was really what I liked about it.. The convenience and cost-effectiveness of electric with the range of a traditiional gasoline-powered car.
I love this car and while it isn't flawless, it's a comfortable and quiet ride. I didn't buy it because I'm a green ecofreak. I bought it because I'm cheap. And it's done me well in that regard. I'm really disappointed GM decided to discontinue the Volt. They marketed this car poorly and it shows by the amount of questions I get when I go to fill it up and people say "wait, isn't that an electric car?"
But I've never enjoyed driving a vehicle more. And I honestly wish they'd kept more of the styling from the 1st gen volts in the 2nd gen volts. I'm not fond of those.

Explain why! My volt smokes a Prius, has a lifetime average fuel mileage of 93.6 mpg with over 100k miles on it now, and when traveling over a mountain pass, hybrids and conventional engines alike suffer from loss of oxygen at altitude. The electric motor doesn't care what altitude you're at. It's pretty awesome having just as much power at 8000 feet as you do at sea level. Don't get me wrong, I think Toyotas are great. I loved my Tacoma and still enjoy my Landcruiser. I won't likely get a hybrid instead of an electric car. A Volt is an electric vehicle or EV with generator backup. Much different than a hybrid in the way it is powered.

I open old books and smell them all the time. I also like to go to junkyards and pop the doors to smell the interiors of the mostly complete old cars from the 60's or later. Does this make me a strange person? Those things remind me of something that was better, something that we've lost. Time to go dig out my first edition of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and go back, but I will read it twice more. Thank you for your reminiscent reminder once again. Just merged onto 78 from that same on ramp the other day in a big yellow whistling 4 door that has no business being as quick as it is. I think you'd like to do a review on it one of these days. Is the 71xx number that you put in one of your videos still good to contact you at?

      I sorta doubt that.
the high voltage battery degrades gradually over time and really only results in lower range before the gas engine kicks on.
in ten or fifteen years it might need a new battery, or one pulled from a junkyard and checked out. after 10 years, the gas motor would probably only have the equivalent of 30,000 miles on it. I think it would be a fantastic used car.

2012 volt owner. This fucker will switch to gas even if the tank is empty and will leave you stranded and will leave you stranded with miles left. This car also comes with a beautiful benefit of a petrol gauge that allows you to run out at about 2 bars below a quarter tank. Solid daily driver but gotta be aware of the weird shit is throws at you.

The 2013 Volt has 4 drive modes, Regular, Sport, Mountain, and Hold. The 2012 does not have hold mode. Regular is standard driving, Sport basically changes the pedal response like your friend says, mountain mode turns the gas engine on to keep charge above 15 mi range, and hold will keep the electric range more or less locked in place (sometimes I've had mine dip a mile or two when I drive on the interstate). The Volt is one of GM's most heavily tested cars of all time, plus elecric vehicles just have less moving parts, but they aren't immune to everything. Also Low gear has regenerative braking maxed out vs your actual brake goes to about 75% regen then after that used actual brake calipers to stop the car. Lowe gear and mountain mode are great combination, and low gear and normal drive mode let you drive with only the accelerator, and only brake for a complete stop.

Owner of a '13 Volt... It's... It's an extremely reliable, and economical vehicle. Supremely so. But it is also very boring, coming form owning manual Fiero's and a Cobalt just before it. Still, when gas was $2/gal I was saving $800 a year on gas, including the cost of electricity the Volt used. But not a day goes by I don't regret not buying a full EV. Also, the infotainment/climate control system is AWFUL. They fixed it in 2016, but first-gen Volts infotainment is far and away the worst thing about the car, lol.

    93 octane...for an economy car...hmmm.

    • @snopesman
      @snopesman 7 років тому +5

I own a Volt. I'm able to do my daily commute on electric, so I only use gas for longer drives outside my commute. I end up putting gas in about every three months. For the lifetime of the car, the "MPG" is 140. I put that in quotes because the MPG calculation doesn't include electricity. Premium gas was selected because it has a better shelf life. GM was also able to tune the gas engine for 93 octane, getting a bit more performance out of it. When I take a long road trip on gas, I hang out around 40 MPG when I run out of battery, and I fill up just as quick as any gas vehicle. The highway range is 300 miles or so, so that's pretty much how long most people drive without a break, anyway. Put another way, the cost difference between 93 and 87 ends up being a few cents if your driving needs line up with the way the car is designed to be used. If you do long highway trips all the time and don't have access to electricity (I charge at work and at home) then the Volt probably isn't the best choice -- a fuel sipper that gets better highway mileage would be better. But if you have a regular commute that's under 35ish miles it's really very good at that.

The Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf are two of the few cars that it can actually make economic sense to buy new. For both, the newer generation is much better than the older generation. For the Volt, the new one has longer EV range, better styling inside and out, and a little more room in the back seat. For the Leaf, the new one has longer range and more reliable battery. But the main reason you would want to buy new is because of the discounts and incentives. The Volt MSRP is around 34k, but with manufacturer and dealer discounts, and federal and state incentives, you can chop $14k to $17k off that. The Leaf MSRP is $31k, but you can also chop $14k to $17k off it. Both also have good lease deals: $99/mo for the Leaf and $199 for the Volt.

Dan Sanger It does depend on your tax situation, not everyone qualifies for the credits. Used these vehicles can be a great deal as well provided you're factoring in the credits the prior owner already would have taken in to the used car pricing. That said we leased our Leaf for the same price as what we spent on gas in our old vehicle (electric expenses were very minimal!) and bought our i3 dealer leftover for a great discounted price and titled as new so we were able to get the federal credit on it as well. After credit our new i3 with 30 miles on it went for about the same price as what CPO examples are going for now.

  • @JustinOhio

Mountain mode doesn't "charge the car when doing downhill". This car has regenerative braking (and coasting). So any time you let off of the accelerator pedal it starts immediately putting that energy back into the battery, regardless of what mode you're in. The same applies when using the brakes, they are completely regenerative until around 5 mph or in emergency braking situations. Using mountain mode reserves the bottom 20-30% of the battery so that you won't have any trouble ascending any mountains while driving at normal highway speeds.
Sport mode merely changes the mapping of the throttle, nothing more. It doesn't make the battery produce any more power to the wheels.
I wish people would research a little more before making videos like this.
