I lived in New Haven about 25 years ago right when the electrification was extended to Boston. I remember going to Union Station often to see the engine changes (they only started electric service to Boston running two AEM-7 hauled trains a day, the rest were still swapped in New Haven). Never gets old seeing it, and at the same time it is a throwback. New Haven in my opinion is one of the great stations on the Northeast corridor and is among my top 5 favorites in that region.
2008 was the last time I had taken the Vermonter train. Out of all my time taking the Vermonter train bypassing New Haven, I never saw a coach attach to the engines being swapped.
i was up there yesterday afternoon and evening, went to new london for a bit then union for my return trip to stamford. ended up seeing the freight train on the way back down, sadly was to dark for pictures and our own train was moving the opposite direction
Some place near that police car was the New Haven Tower. It was in service until sometime in the late 1990s or early 2000s, then torn down. I believe the old Fair Street Tower (on the east end) is still standing but not in service.
Hi, can you take the train to Waterbury, CT and talk about the history of the railroads there? Also, can you talk about how new rail service can be implemented there (in the same video)?
I have been told that Amtrak has or soon will order dual mode locomotives to eliminate time consuming and costly engine changes in places like Washington, D.C., Harrisburg, New York City, New Haven, Boston, etc.

Wow, lots of action at that time. Good to see how many there are, coming and going. Interesting to see the change of locomotives. Thank you very much.
Awesome. Busy location. It was the end of overhead power many years ago.
Thanks Tim💚👌
Good memories from my many trips out of New Haven Union Station during my two years as a grad student at Yale - thank you, Tim!!

Agreed. Worthy of the home of Yale University.
I cast my vote for 30th St Station in the birthplace of the nation....Philadelphia PA
This was a great episode.
That was good. Going to be seriously Cold next week!
Love New Haven!
Exciting place

New Haven is also a crew change point for Regionals and I believe the Vermonter.
I know the Acela crews go thru but I thought now Regionals did too. I’ll find that out in a couple of weeks.

Love railfanning this station.

I did a video there last year, but I didn’t mention too much about history
14:45 very much.
Amfleet screech will always be a marker of Amtrak. Such does Shoreliner and its funny gaps
16:16 uh oh.
welcome to my neck of the woods, Tim
Amtrak need to repaint their Amfleet coaches back into Phase III

Once they replace the ACS-64's there wouldn't be a need for an engine change at all. Not at New Haven, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
I’ll miss those engines. I love them
you "had to leave the scene," did they kick you out at the end.? or ferry schedule
I had to catch a certain train so I could catch the desirable ferry to get me home at a respectable hour after having dinner getting off the ferry
