Game designers be like: Let's just have the boss sit in the middle of the screen and never actually do anything. Also let's make it so a cannon is placed conveniently above the boss for no reason and kills him and make the fight stupidly long.
It can be pretty linear and it tells you where to go most of the time, but it mostly leaves getting there to you, you’re free to explore the area or even head to previous ones as you please, though most side paths are locked behind future moves, so I would recommend sticking to the path at the start and starting to explore more as you get more moves.
