Probably the best tutorial on this technique that I've seen. I'm a 63 year-old duffer who is now simracing, using mainly paddle shifts on the steering wheel, but in my younger days I recall using a 'three on the tree' transmission, but cannot recall doing heel-toe. I bought an H-pattern shifter for my rig, and will now learn how to do heel-toe, which I should have done 40 years ago, lol.
Me too. I learned in 1988 and I did not learn any of this type of thing. So I’m catching up personally myself. Good to see another person here pretty recently watching this video. It’s very helpful!
Okay, THIS VIDEO gave me a clear insight on downshifting with rev matching without being confused. Now, it's just practice and muscle memory. Thanks man!
Iv watched a lot of rev matching tuts.. This is by far one of the most best teaching, understandable rev matching tut, i think iv seen to date. Thank you for this video.
The "EATING WITH A KNIFE AND FORK " (without self harming) upload is a knockout ....How long before be having a "KIPPER FOR BREAKFAST" and not a Pop Tart ?......Lets all be Hip and Trendy and change gear like a 60's to late 70's rally driver ...Oh bless .how kool with a "K" can dude be ?
Thanks for the video! This is the only video on UA-cam that actually explains how to rev match. Its very obvious you know what you're talking about. Other videos just recite other UA-camrs.
Holy shit, I've watched about 15 other videos and yours was the only one that actually made any sense to me at all. Thanks a bunch man! Been driving a manual for almost 3 years and I just now heard about rev matching, double clutching etc, and wanted to learn to give it a go.
good video, just a note for everyone else watching he says "drop the clutch" you never want to DROP the clutch. You'll end up with a dead clutch quickly. You always progressively release the clutch...unless you like visiting the mechanic lol
If u hv a heavy duty clutch u can “drop it” faster than stock clutch, I know becuz I learnt in a stock clutch and now drive with a heavy duty clutch. U can technically drop the clutch if the revs perfectly line up with the associated speed range for that gear.
Woah.. i was like more than 4 months (in january I started to learn for my DL, and in march i got the DL finally) wrong. I thought downshift is like > lil brake, clutch, change gear, releas the clutch. Now i did finally get it. Thank you so much.
Best explanation I've seen. Other day I was cruising in gear six on motorway doing 60mph. I down shifted to gear three, revs went near to red line and I think I smelt burning, and acceleration was not that great. I won't be doing that again lol
Another tip that helped me was to start with heel toe from 4th to 3rd as it's an easier gearbox stick move compared to the 3rd to 2nd shift. You have so much going on when learning heel toe that the simple 'push the gearstick up' move from 4th to 3rd takes one variable out of the equation. I also think modern cars are so insulated it's harder to hear the engine revs. I find it harder to heel toe in my wife's 3yo Audi than my 13yo Cayman!!
great vid bro. I've been practicing heel toe rev match down shifting in my new focus rs. I got a gas pedal spacer from mishimoto that brings the gas pedal up to be even with the brake. It makes it so much easier to reach the gas with your heel. I've been rev matching for years but the heel toe takes a bit of practice. It seemed like i could never get the blip right since my gas pedal was recessed and it was so damn uncomfortable and almost physically impossible to reach. as soon as I got the gas pedal spacer I banged it out perfect in a few days. my lap times at the track actually decreased a bit since my shifts are so much smoother. anyway, this is by far the most informative heel toe vid on here. props
Thanks dude! I've been driving manual for years and never really worried about rev matching or heel toe but damn it does help! I've got the rev matching down but heel toe is killing me hahaha
Practice makes perfect. Good advice practicing heel toe while parked. I also recomend practice rev matching while driving first. Once you got a grip on that move on to heel toe
You can go down the gears without rev matching by slowing down to around 1500rpms(still in gear then down shift to lower gear). This works because when your going slow say 50 kmph or about 30mph in top gear the lower gear is only going to increase rpms by about 500. Also in modern cars, the rpms wont go lower then 1500rpms whilst your moving and shifting gear. This is a tip for simple daily driving.
Finally a video that actually explains the difference between both. Im interested in learning to drive manual and all the rev match and heel toe vides didn’t really specify what the difference between both is.
Thanks, I showed my little cousin this to teach him because I couldnt explain it. haha. But your technique is the same as mine and I would say it is Senna’s heel-toe.
Exoticars19 Today I got a throttle blip downshift to third without braking absolutely perfectly with probably a 5.5k rev match (much higher than normal in rev range). That felt absolutely amazing.
Rev matching is an advanced technique never did it learning to drive. It definitely does make it smoother when driving. I hate the whine noise when just lifting off the clutch especially when in second gear.
Hello Brandon. This video is very informative. I never focus or tried to rev match when I had manual vehicles. I Just heard about rev match till the new model corvettes and camaros! But when I get another manual transmission, I will practice heel and toe more to experience on my own what rev match feels like.
I love your videos, I have a 2013 FRS myself and I find it quite hard to heal and toe, anytime I keep my toe on the brakes and blip the throttle with my heal, I apply too much brake force. But practice makes perfect, I can rev match perfectly though.
I was the same exact way! The pedal position really isn't made for a real "heel toe" on our cars. Just get used to sitting still with the car running and blip the throttle while on your brake. After a day of driving, it clicks. Best of luck & thanks for the support!
Thanks for this very good video. I am still unclear on one point: When do you start using the brake in conjunction with the throttle as opposed to just touching the throttle only? Is it after a certain gear or certain speed or revs? In the video you seemed to do it only when you actually need to stop so is this where throttle and brake are used together? Note that I only have a 5 speed manual.
I always drove only manual, Europe doesn't really like automatic transmissions. I've never heard of revmatching until recently when a car i like has this active rev matching system. Searched some info about that like this vid, and it seems i was doing that without knowing. Though i find it weird to press the brakes and throttle at the same time with the same foot as you are doing. I was just braking then hitting the throttle progressively while releasing the clutch.
I was taught by an ex professional driver that the correct rev matching is done in this way: -Push your clutch and move the gear from, let's say, sixth gear to neutral -Give some throttle to rev match -Put quickly your gear in fifth fear In this way your the clutch and also the gear disingage completely from the engine Am I correct?
This is called double clutching which you can use if you lets say want to from 5 to 3 then double clutching is relevant. In other cases u use this method "heel and toe"
That.. doesn't sound like double clutching. Double Clutching is Being in 6th (for example) Clutch in > 5th to neutral > Clutch out > Clutch in again > Neutral to 5th > Clutch out. What he's asking is Clutch in > 6th to Neutral > Blip throttle > Neutral to 5th > Clutch out. Normal Rev matching (as explained in most videos) would be Clutch in > 6th to 5th > Blip throttle > Clutch out. He's basically been told to blip the throttle while in neutral rather than while being in the gear he's changing too. As for whether this is accurate or not i idk
Clutch -> Rev -> Change to lower gear -> release the clutch Question: Do you just let go of the clutch fully or do you still have to do it slowly and find the "soft spot"?
I have a question....why wouldn't you want to rest your heel on the break and move your toe over to the gas to rev......that would seem easier to me.....right heel on break and move right toe to the gas. To me it's more natural to rev with my toe and just relax my heel on the break? Just curious.
You release it normally, like in every other shift. Once you blip the throttle, you'll quickly have to find the engagement point. If you blip and release the clutch too slow, revs will drop back to idle quickly and you'll miss the sweet spot. You must not hesitate. I learned this in Assetto Corsa with pedal indicators, before trying it out for real. You have to understand what you're looking for. Enough blip to bring the revs up and making the bite, right at the top of the blip. Making the engagement with too much or too little throttle will ruin it and you'll know it. Or if you're already at the biting point with revs either still building up or already dropping down. This is why perfect H&T feels so good, when you nail it - Making the bite exactly when the revs reach the top, before the drop.
I might have missed this in your video so apologies... Before using the heel toe method, how did you turn on corners? Lets say you're at 4th gear (going faster than you should) and on a right turn lane about to turn right into another street; and need to slow down + shift down. How would you do that without using the heel toe method?
BboyJJRuda Brake, downshift to third or second gear (without releasing the clutch completely) then step on the gas pedal until you hear the revs are high enough to get the most torque and release the rest of the clutch slowly. This may not be the right way, but it feels very smooth.
kan colle if the clutch is fully pressed in you aren’t burning it because it is fully disconnected. Burning the clutch is when you’re partially pressing it and gassing it.
Half of the manual car community says downshifting revmatching is essential and should be done Everytime you shift down So what's the correct way because I'm sick and tired of this argument. I'm self teaching myself stick in a ND mx5 because I have no friends ( I like being by myself) and no one in my family knows stick. I've just been watching videos after videos after videos on stick tutorials. Half of the videos say downshifting revmatching should be done when downshifting. So I'm like WTF is the correct way to shift down. I've been driving for a year now on my ND and I just finally are getting better at upshifting but down shifting is where I don't know what to do. I've tried to just shift down without blipping the throttle and I buckle the car but the car buckles really hard alot. So what is the correct way to downshifting?
So It's Clutch, Blip Throttle, Downshift, Let out clutch??? Or Clutch, Downshift, Blip Throttle, Let out Clutch??? I tried rev matching on a 370z to get the idea of it since it has active rev match. Then went and did it on a mustang. I did it but it jumped a lil. Guess I didn't give it enough gas?
might have given it too much gas. its called matching b/c you wanna match where the rpm would be in that gear at the same or a bit slower speed, so if you're going 20 mph in third, and rev to 5k to downshift to second it might jump from being revved too high
Have grown up driving manual, first time hearing nonsense like this Heel Toe stuff. You just break and get the clutch pedal in, and then while you release the clutch you press the gas. Just gotta move your right leg fast from the break to the gas, even tho considering you're going pretty fast there is no rush really. No double pressure or anything on the pedals. That's just dumb. That's how you cause accidents by watching which pedal you are pressing. LMAO, Murica really has some phucked up stuff! Just stick to automatic guys!
well you know how to drive manual but you actually dont know how to drive it. you wont cause accidents. when you learn rev match youll understand it helps you brake much faster and it wont jerk the crap out your car when just downshifting. ppl that get into accidents and cause accidents are the automatic drivers haha.
just a guy trying to make sense of your comment even tho it’s quite hard tbh. First of all being able to drive manual and driving manual my entire life basically would mean I know that you can break faster using the transmission. Thank you for smth that I know for 10 years the very least. And if you read my comment properly you would have understood that I was talking about this heel to toe nonsense. You just do it fast, you don’t need to press the break and gas pedal at the same time!

Hi Chris
I have been using the technique for some time. Your explanation while stationary was excellent.
Well done.
This is by far the best explanation of the heel toe downshift.
Thanks! Glad it helps!
been driving for around 3 years and still have that "clunky" movement every now and again when shifting - this has helped big time, thanks man.....
Glad this could help!
I've seen a million rev matching videos and yet I haven't got the most of it. But this one is exceptional 🔥
Finally a great explanation!
After so many yt videos I finally came to the right place, bless u

Big truck drivers double clutch all the time. I'm going to re-learn as i wasnt the best lol

Have fun...are you good at it now?
Damn bro, you look like Tyler Joseph from twenty one pilots. I love your video btw, manual transmission is the best.

you know that feeling when you get good at rev matching but once in a while you screw up and you're just like Goddamn it
Haha, very well. But you're a hero when you get it just right!
Exoticars19 Today I got a throttle blip downshift to third without braking absolutely perfectly with probably a 5.5k rev match (much higher than normal in rev range). That felt absolutely amazing.
Who needs paddle shifters? ;D
Exoticars19 Haha, this is so much more rewarding for sure!

Thanks for the tips. Practicing on standing still on foot works help a lot. 🦅🦅🇺🇸 cheers

you are the best on you tube for learning detailed info.
Doesn't this wear out the brakes a lot quicker.
can you show power shifting as well.
You really know how to explain thanks I have a simple toyota Corolla apex2022
Thanks mate, I got the stuff 🍻
actually have been curious about this....
I've always been afraid I would burn out the clutch by rev matching, but maybe that's just my imagination??? any body have input on that?
Thanks for this very good video. I am still unclear on one point: When do you start using the brake in conjunction with the throttle as opposed to just touching the throttle only? Is it after a certain gear or certain speed or revs? In the video you seemed to do it only when you actually need to stop so is this where throttle and brake are used together? Note that I only have a 5 speed manual.
Facts this was a great explanation
Amazing explanation! Great video! Thanks
Really glad to hear that you found this helpful!
What advantage does it give you exactly? If you were to break separately and change gears while rev matching, wouldn't that work as well?
I always drove only manual, Europe doesn't really like automatic transmissions. I've never heard of revmatching until recently when a car i like has this active rev matching system. Searched some info about that like this vid, and it seems i was doing that without knowing. -Give some throttle to rev match
-Put quickly your gear in fifth fear
In this way your the clutch and also the gear disingage completely from the engine
Am I correct?
Instead of shifting into neutral you can shift into 5th gear with the clutching still in blip the gas and the new release the clutch

QUESTION: do i let go of the gas pedal before letting go of the clutch while matching the rev, or do i keep my foot on it while realising the clutch?
Spot on video man great job
Thanks!
Clutch -> Rev -> Change to lower gear -> release the clutch
Question: Do you just let go of the clutch fully or do you still have to do it slowly and find the "soft spot"?
Arrizon Cristobal slowly
Sooooo Im in 5th gear, I put clutch in , shift to 4th ,give it a bit of gas then release the clutch ???
Yup
Yep

Hey bro still no luck from 3rd to 2nd gear. Rest I can do ezily but any tips on 3rd to 2nd
With rev matching, does it matter if you downshift after blipping when the clutch is in, or should you blip then downshift?
You've been a great help. Thank you,
Thanks Sam! Glad this was useful!
Should you switch the gear before, after, or during the rev?
Before. Put in gear, blip the throttle to rev match, release the clutch.
Release the clutch slowly after the engagement point, right?
So do it quick, but without dropping the clutch?
Yes, don't drop it. The point is to not upset the car under braking.
Good video man!
do you blip the throttle to put the car in the lower gear or blip the throttle after you put it in the lower gear?
Very helpful
Thank you very much!
Hey bro, how fast would you release the clutch when downshifting. Fast as when you go from 2 to 3 or is it shit slow
Is rev matching good ... does it cause any failure to engine...
Why was everything within the whole second at 7:45 so satisfying though?
Brake checking nobody, haha! That is definitely the way rev matching (while braking) started for me.
Ayrton Senna's Heel-and-toe
video could help also :)
nice video man
thank you ! that helped a lot
Thanks Bro... you Are Awesome
The dead pedal in the thumbnail made me look twice. I thought they had some sort of gigamanual transmission that I didn’t know about.
Great vid, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
This may not be the right way, but it feels very smooth.
i have a question, when youre coming to a stop, which is better: coasting or downshift eg from 3 to 2 to 1
I personally downshift all the way to 2nd then neutral. Depends on the car/gearbox for me.
Exoticars19 so do i need to rev match for each gear when im downshifting all the way to 2? because that would take time. or just downshift like normal
Wait so do you blip the throttle while shifting down? or do you blip it before you shift down? im confused.
Either one, as long as the clutch is engaged.
you HAVE to wear sneakers? ? can you make a video try this with combat boots? ?
First wrx 6speed, this won't burn the clutch if you blip it especially when starting to move on first?
kan colle if the clutch is fully pressed in you aren’t burning it because it is fully disconnected. Burning the clutch is when you’re partially pressing it and gassing it.
I have a question when do you rev? in neutral before you put in in a lower gear?
Clutch in, change gear, blip the throttle, clutch out. Have fun!
how about double clutching and rev ma5ch ?
I've been practicing but dang it's hard
This will increase fuel consumption?
i dont have wide feet and my brake and gas are kinda far apart from each other.
Do I quickly release clutch after or slowly?
Smoothly
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾thx u mate

finally .. thank god.. or thank you . :)
Glad you liked this video!
Guess I didn't give it enough gas?
might have given it too much gas. its called matching b/c you wanna match where the rpm would be in that gear at the same or a bit slower speed, so if you're going 20 mph in third, and rev to 5k to downshift to second it might jump from being revved too high
also as for your first question about the order, it's kinda blip first but try to do it at the same time

If you ever rode a motorcycle you would know about rev matching
wouldn't this hurt your clutch?
If you abuse it, but just moderate amount of gas is fine.
What’s the point thanks in advance
its called Big Foot Shifting
Need camera side by side bro
Some people say you don't need to rev match at all ever. I call bullshit. My car will punish you for not doing it.
nice vedeo
Yeah this video was horrible for visual learners.
