- My most expensive gadget to be covered on this channel yet - a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7! It's an awesome laptop, so glad I chose a ThinkPad over other brands for what is essentially my college and university laptop!
Oops, I meant to say Ubuntu Linux while unboxing the laptop, sorry for the slip of the tongue!
I plan to restore Windows 10 to this laptop since I will have to use it for college's CS course which uses Visual Basic. Will consider dual booting in the future, but for now, expect a Windows focused review in the future unfortunately :(
Edit: nvm, I'm back to Linux! It seems like I could compile using Linux fine.
Edit 2: I'm back on Windows again due to some issues which I will go over in the review.
Edit 3: On Fedora 32 now, as promised in the video :)
Do a Virtual Machine bro (-:
You can probably use Windows with Linux subsystem. Good luck with the college.
why are you a worm?
@@sunnycal8615 I mean him reviewing it on the floor kinda fits
Thanks mate came here for the Ubuntu
That Is the best ThinkPad laptop I ever seen in 2021
i have this laptop and at home i connect it to an egpu that is really portable it waits 2 pound with out the graphic card. i have a gtx 1660 super and this laptop becomes a desktop.. powerful enogh to video edit with DaVinci resolve and play any game..i dont play games but i benchmark it..
Nice! I got a 6th gen and hoping it will work as good as this. Does the backlight run without any issues? I didn't have much luck getting it to work on my asus ROG. Looking into dualbooting openbsd and windows, if its at all possible.
Great choice of Laptop. Thinkpad X1 is the best machines in the world.
It sure is :)
P53 will eat X1 for breakfast.
How’s the battery life on Ubuntu?
Battery life could be fixed by grabbing autocpu-freq from Git
@@plutorocks1 The newest Ubuntu version comes with the Gnome Power Manager which works really well
hows the palm detection of the track pad on linux?
Thanks mate! :)
Why u you don’t show which programs you used in the USB to install Linux in order to bypass Microsoft License?
Cool! Thanks. Can you use your microphone on the ubuntu?
Sorry for the late reply, that does work on Ubuntu.
Is this laptop compatible with any other Linux distros?
Is there any issue with just installing Linux Mint and wiping out the windows? Thanks and cheers!
I used Ubuntu and Fedora with no problems
Was thinking about getting this exact laptop and running Linux natively as well. How did/do you like the laptop so far?
Unfortunately I had to get a refund for my unit, as it had numerous hardware issues. While I had it, Linux ran really well on it, no complaints.
@@digitalworm5808 Sorry to hear that, makes me a bit nervous about getting one now

how to configure Fingerprint sensor for X1-carbon 6G or 7G in ubuntu?
For Gen 7 and above, you just need to update the firmware using fwupdmgr, and it should work afterwards
@@digitalworm5808 Thanks a lot for reply, i have Gen 6 actually. It means i can not clean install Ubuntu on X1 Gen6 as fingerprint sensor is not detected :(
@@AdeelMuhammad same not working gen6.... Do u make fingerprint worked on 20.04? same as wwan so..
@@Nikita-zd1gc i made it work on X1 Gen6 with glossy screen model on ubuntu 20.10 & pop os 20.10 by removing printfd pacakge and installing a custom made printfd package from net. And it works flawlessly
@AdeelMuhammad I hope they were able to fix this issue since it's been 3 yearssl! If not, I'll definitely follow this comment. Thanks!
Are they good for 4k monitor?
I don’t have the laptop anymore so unfortunately I’m unable to test that.
Hi, how's wqhd working out on linux for you? Do you use fractional scaling or 100/200%? Would you mind creating a video how that looks like?
Fractional scaling does work but it looks a bit blurry for me. I am fine with it on default scaling. 100% makes everything too small.
@@digitalworm5808 The default scaling is 100% and should look small or maybe your default scaling looks bigger than usual? Could you tell us thank you
His display feels 4K hence Gnome picked 200% scaling
do any thinkpad laptops do arch ?
Are you doing a dual boot here?
I'm a bit confused!
I'm solely using Linux :)
What does sleep mode do? Why do you need to change it?
Changing the sleep mode to Linux uses the traditional S3 'deep' sleep, if you leave it on the Windows 10 mode, it will use S2idle a.k.a Modern Standby, which isn't power efficient on Linux.
Is there any trouble? Like gpu driver something?
If you're running Linux, it's pretty much trouble free if you have a newer kernel. I use Linux 5.7.12 on Fedora 32 now and everything works fine.
Nice machine put, screen resolution 1366x720 is not aceptable
Why would you want to make a windows 10 linux.
Nice video , bro;
