- I know some of you have been waiting for me to do this video with tips on spinning finer or thinner yarns, right down to lace weight. It happens really often that new spinners quickly want to spin their wool finer or thinner. Here's what to practice with, how to set your wheel up, what might be tripping you up, and ways to get around the limitations of the wheel you have.

From Gerry- I remember being a new spinner and being so excited when I progressed out of bulky and into worsted! I think it took me longer than most but now I can do them all (except every now and then I have trouble with consistency). What you're spinning is beautiful and so consistent. You are an excellent teacher and I can say that because I retired from 30+ years of elementary teaching. Thank you and God bless.

Girl, I NEEDED this!!! I can't wait to try this out! My first spin I wanted a fingering weight and ended up with worsted😂 but I'm still very new so I'm not too disappointed. Thank you for all the tips!
OMG! So glad to have the tips to find the end of snapped single. Ended up trashing half a bobbin several months ago. Even my saintly patient hubby gave up.

I don't think you realize how much I appreciate this video. This bamboo thang is sooooo thin on the singles and I have to push myself to keep it mostly consistent (40 wpi or under). Plus, your hair is awesome, so shush. lol

As a lace knitter I naturally gravitated towards lace weight yarn. Being a newbie spinner it meant lots and lots of snapping and lost ends. I’d already gotten advice on drafting, fiber prep, tension, uptake… but finding back the end could be a nightmare. Even though I don’t snap my yarn as often anymore I do love my toothbrush to recover a lost end.
To lace weight spinners or aspiring lace weight spinners out there: yes, it might seem to take forever but that’s only if you look at it in terms of how many ounces/grams of fibre you spin or in terms of how long it takes to fill a bobbin. If you take a different perspective and look at the yardage/metres, it does take longer but nearly not as much as you’d think. 1-0.9 oz of lace weight yarn can contain a whopping 200-230 yards of yarn. For an entire shawl, you might only need a few ounces.
Now, think about how many yards/bobbins of yarn you might need to spin for a cardigan, a sweater, or an afghan. Don’t think of how many bobbins you might need. Yes, you’ll get to your yardage a bit faster. But it won’t be as slow as you might think.
When you first showed how thin it was, my eyes bugged out a little! 😆

Nicely demonstrated Trish. My seasonal birds are changing right now. The raucous currawongs that had kept me company through winter and being replaced with galahs and parrots.
I just came back from a trip to Kelona BC and picked myself up mohair and alpaca roving there and low a behold you have this informative vid with fantastic I never thought of before tips on how to spin lace weight yarn....many thanks for this...as a side my granddaughter of 16 picked up the roving I got her in the past and for the first time spun on my traditional and loved it....yay another new spinner joining the fiber tribe...Kim
A toothbrush is also my go to tool for lost ends. Your yarn looked incredibly evenly spun even when you changed drafting methods I didn’t see any changes. 👍
About 10000 hours of practice will do that 🤣

as a person who has literally got so frustrated trying to find the end of the yarn when it snapped that I literally cut all the singles off the bobbin and threw it all out (twice that has happened) I am super grateful that you included those tips on how to find that broken end again.
Trish, I can’t even see the yarn as it’s drawn into the wheel. Now that’s fine! I also have the schact matchless. I love it. You can spin any type of yarn on it.

This is so helpful!!! I've been scared to try spinning a true lace weight single/yarn. I'm working my way down and I think my current spin will be a light fingering, which is a step in the right direction. 🤞 I'll get there eventually 😊😊

I'm just spinning a super fine yarn it's taken over a week ( with work in between) to spin 54g which is about 2oz. I can't wait to ply it and see the final yarn fingers crossed that will be today xx

Oh and I lost my end once and never found it 😭 I was new’ish and ended up cutting one for me to continue with 🤦🏻♀️ what I was thinking I have no clue but it was an even bigger mess when I plied after I finished the messed up single 😂 I chalk it up to a learning experience

Great video, thank you! ❤ I’ve got fingering weight down but still trying to get to lace weight. I’ve tried the toothbrush method, sometimes it does the trick. Sometimes my bobbins fill up so unevenly that finding the broken single end is practically impossible and the toothbrush just makes a huge mess. Need to practice more.

Thank you for the awesome video and tips. Question, when I am spinning I find that at times all of a sudden I have way too much twist in my yarn. I have tried drafting more fiber and try to get the extra twist to go in to it, but what am I doing wrong to end up with way too much twist? Luv ya Trish
