Another South Korean production that deserves more recognition is 'Kingdom' - absolutely fantastic zombie series but it tackles the whole zombie genre from quite a different angle. I also enjoyed the feudal Korean setting instead of your typical modern-day zombie apocalypse

Kingdom is my favorite zombie anything tbh. I liked that the story actually progressed and by the end of season 2 at least some conclusions had been reached. It meant that plot points didn't stagnate or get boring. Same with Train to Busan (the first one. There is no sequel, don't know what you're talking about).

I love this show, much better than walking dead, but they do stretch the being couped up together too long. It' wasnt necessary to go into having them make shitting accommodation. People also seem to fall over far too much; every time they change direction, or trip over a particle of dust, which gets a bit annoying, but other than that its excellent watching. Big hopes for Korea in the film and TV biz.

Its the one thing that the zombie genre tries to ignore. It doesn't take a genius to realize that if your first ploy doesn't work, you change it up. It is like SciFi movies where the enemy creatures always take a full magazine of ammo to kill. Well, if your firearms aren't up to the task you simply switch up to more powerful ordinance. If 5.56 Nato can't do the job with one shot, you switch to 7.62. Still not enough? You switch to 50 cal and there won't be enough left of the zombie to even be a threat. Or you switch to molotov cocktails. Burn them down to nothing. Fragmentation grenades to shread them to pieces. Etc.
Once the military figures out how to best put a foreign enemy down, they simply switch tactics to take advantage of the weakness.
But with all of that said, it is unfortunate for this school that the baseball and softball teams weren't practicing. Between the balls, the bats, and the protective equipment, they probably would have made short work of the zombies before the numbers became overwhelming. Baseball bats are definitely underrated in the genre and you clean house. And speaking of houses, I wonder if the school had a carpentry class. Enough power tools there to reap havoc.

But what makes RE different from other media in the zombie genre is that there's no such zombie apocalypse that occured worldwide (other than the outbreak in Raccoon City) and zombie viruses merely serve as a backdrop to other themes like terrorism and war in Third World countries

Korean here. The real secret to all the amazing shows isn't the cast, director, or even the script. It's the government's hands-off approach to let the creative folks, you know, CREATE. There's no agenda and very little censorship (unless the ultra-conservatives takes over the Presidency from time to time).
The other secret is the Korean audience. Boy, imagine hundreds of thousands of The Critical Drinker-types writing, calling, and Tweeting their complaints when the show sucks. They'd even organize a boycott rally or two to pressure the advertisers when things really get out of hand!
Like what the Samsung heiress and head of CJ Entertainment Miki Lee said during the Parasite's Best Picture acceptance speech, it is the Korean audience that lets the entertainment industry know when they f*ck up. It is this constant pressure to get better and better that's driving everything from Kpop to Kdrama to Kmovies the last 2 decades.

Tbh, after Train to Busan, Kingdom and All of Us Are Dead, and #Alive I'm very happy with what the Koreans are doing with the zombie genre.
Its been a staple of American cinema for so long that here, it's become a bland "I know what to expect" genre filled to the brim with overused tropes archetypes, clichés and ideas that have been done and done again
Korean cinema put a new spin on the whole thing, with obvious love for the original themes and zombies of Romero, (cultural critic, cramped and claustrophobic or usually not lived-in locations, some zombies retaining memories, the idea of being stuck somewhere, for a few examples) while also giving a new more believable level of threat to the zombies, changing things up culturally to create new problems and thus new solutions (much harder to get a gun in Korea than the USA, therefore melee strategies can be seen that have been completely ignored by most US media. Think of the people in train to Busan duct-taping magazines to their forearms to protect against bites, the kids in All of Us Are Dead using wood panels and gym equipment to form shields in order to move through overwhelming numbers of zombies, this is truly creative, intelligent, on the spot problem solving, and it feels so much more apocalyptical and like a true crisis when a bunch of inexperienced people have to come up with a quickly put together solution with whatever useless everyday object they can use or transform for their purposes.
Its also a breeze of fresh air that the army and police are actually shown to have even a basic understanding of strategy and tactics. The use of drones, high payload missiles, helicopters troops to rescue survivors on the roof, a very strict and very isolated quarantine camp run like a prison and riot police actually holding their shieldwall instead of panicking like a bunch of conscripted peasants.
I'm still super angry about American shows portraying the military as more useless than the Civilians, for example in Fear the Walking dead, the National guard base fell in a couple minutes, cuz they had 2 guys on watch on a tower with such a shit field of vision that they didn't see or hear a 1000+ horde approach.
    Pathetic.
As a huge fan of the zombie genre, I'm happy to see someone pick up the torch of the genre's legacy and actually do something great and respectful of the original work, without devolving to western media's new age low standards and politicisation of everything. Plus I get to learn about their culture through their take on it.
    Go South-Korea !

As someone who frequently watches SK dramas, I thought this series was absolutely horrible. Except for Daesu and a handful of side characters, all the main characters are painfully unlikeable or have made incredibly stupid choices, that's while I still take into account they're average highschoolers. I don't feel bad when most of them are killed and often their deaths are unsatisfying. I keep wondering what's the purpose of all of that struggle since nothing is paid off. It's painfully repetitive after the 4th episode, the pace is all over the place and even when I watch it in 2x speed it still dragged on for too long. I'm glad that Critical Drinker enjoyed it but I just want to warn some people that you might find it a frustrating huge waste of time.

I would like to disagree. The Walking Dead in my opinion (in the earlier seasons anyway) far out strip Korea's 'zombie movie' niche. All Of Us Are Dead innovate in no way shape or form, being rigid and formulaic if not a stretched out carbon copy of Train To Busan, a acting zombie horror movie as a disguise for social commentary beneath, a problem opposite of TWD, being the power creep of the story, upping the drama to ridiculous levels to retain an idea of a 'threat and enemy' without care of logical story planning.
    Case in point:
TWD journey jumped open when we experience the apocalypse via Rick who was unaffected by the whole thing, being separated. He then experiences and molded by the events around him and grow as he would to adapt to the new world. We then got a spark of hope that this whole thing could be fixed, leading us to a journey to find medicine to cure our homeland, which turned out to be a false hope. Then the show led us to a journey to find home and companionship, which it did wonderfully. Then it tried to do the same thing again, only upping the threat level. It worked a little less. Then they did it again. and again. And again. and now we came to this. Because there was no moving past 'finding a home.'
The same with Korean horror zombie movie. Train to Busan was a perfect storm. Classical horror writing with classical zombie elements, no super powers, no weird abilities, no strange combinations, just zombies and humans in its most basic elements. Then there was the second part of Train to Busan that no one talks about which tried to increase the drama by power creeping and fell on its face. However, as mentioned above, repeating something is bad, and All Of Us Are Dead did exactly that, taking what works with Train of Busan and not changing how the story evolves, with the same old pattern of extremely rigid basics being applied over and over until the story is concluded.

I tried watching this series, and I couldn't make it though it. I really like what Korea has been putting out entertainment wise, Train to Busan is great (and I thought them mentioning it in this show was cute) as well as Kingdom, but I really couldn't like any of the characters in this show. They all make really dumb decisions and they're actions don't do much to make up for it. One of the character's arcs is that she was a stuck up brat who was willing to turn someone into a zombie so everyone wouldn't think she was wrong, proceeds to do nothing to try and redeem herself, then is killed in a manner that I felt was meant to have the viewer feel bad for her. The characters and story don't seem flushed out beyond "there is a zombie outbreak in a school, how will the students survive?" There's literally a point where the characters state that they won't be able to survive more than three days without water, and at that point it has already been about a day. The show then completely forgets about that point after it had its characters spend a full five to ten minutes arguing about, and you never see them address the issue again even after the point where they should have died from dehydration by the story's timeline. I feel like this show was made solly to take advantage of the Zombie craze that's been going through Korea for the least few years

-The protagonists take too much locked in school and that makes it very boring sometimes. It is assumed that for "realism" but they could well take advantage of the fact that they had nothing to eat, to motivate them to go out.
-They mention that in 2 days they could not even move due to lack of water and food, but you see them running and fighting like nothing happens. Throughout the series they are only seen taking rain drops and 2 cm of snickers chocolate.

Well this series has the most unique zombie transformation I have ever seen. I enjoyed the first season however the formula did get a bit repetitive once I figured it out. Characters get chased by zombies. Eacape them by getting into a secure room. A few characters have a heart to heart talk. Something forces them out of the safe room. Another zombie horde chases them. They escape into another secure room. Characters have meaning discussion. Rise and repeat.
Even so I think it is the best zombie series to come along in a long time and even rivals The Walking Dead in some ways. I liked how the virus was grounded in reality and didn't follow the usual trope of no matter how people die they to turn into zombies.
However, the superhuman/zombie hybrid mutaion killed the reality of the virus and lowered the stakes. Fortunately, they limited it to only 3 characters.
Anyway I hope Netflix renews it for a second season because I would love to see what happens as the remaining characters continue to fight to survive.

Really liked the geography of the school grounds and local town. Also wasn't too much of a fan of the superhuman powered zombie human part, which i think would be the main story of a second season if one happens. Well.... There is a first time for everything and this is the first drinkers review/recommendation that flopped for me. Wasted whole Sunday watching this series still hoping to find something I have missed. When he said few episodes a bit slow it is not true - all episodes are no matter how much action in between. All episodes should have been 25 minutes not 1 hour. Very repetitive scenes. Everything is stretched out to appoint where I started skipping. So many plot points were introduced for no reason like the pink sweater girl. Won't spoil it but who watched will agree that after certain scene she should have been cut out from the episodes because she did nothing - just added unnecessary time and took away from actual plot which is moving forward for a change. I understand this is should be drama/horror with some action in between but when a dozen zombies have 0 impact and 1 has unbelievable amount of damage to the whole group just kills the whole horror aspects of this series. So many times people have weapons and absolutely clear kill hit to the head they always go for the back of the zombie unless that person is an archer... I get they are all kids but the amount of parkour stuff they do, seams very unbalanced that at some points they are weak and dumb all of the sudden... As if the plot needs them to be so instead of sticking to their abilities. The only reason I watched is just for laughs at the end. Liked some of the drama aspects but they almost every time follow by something silly that ruins the build up. Great effect (CGI and practical). Ending a bit rushed and not very satisfying. All together give it 5 out of 10. Would have been 8 out of 10 if they reduced the time per episode to at least 30 minutes by cutting things like sitting for long times, talking about the same issues again again, slow building (could have been shot in 2-3 shots instead like 8 or 10 of the same thing). I still trust drinkers opinion because every other movie I watched before or after review matched just this was a disappointment.

Imo this is an absolutely terrible show. Character decisions don’t make sense, and they only happen to serve the plot. Actors are just okay but I couldn’t stand the first few episodes of non-sensible drama. For example, spoiler alert, in one scene the main guys left a classroom becos of a zombie, and in another they discovered they can just throw the zombie out the window. Only reason they didn’t know how to do that the first time round is becos the plot needs to move forward.

Now you HAVE to watch Sweet Home! Korean filmmakers are absolutely OWNING the horror genre these days

There was also another Asian horror film called Sweet Home but this one is a Japanese film from the 1980s.
It was made by Toho (the Godzilla studio) and it is a really good horror film, but its licensed video game adaptation from Capcom for the Famicom (Japanese NES) is even better.
The Sweet Home Famicom game is much more well-known than the movie and it directly inspired the Resident Evil games.

I've been watching some Korean series lately too, more and more. It's funny even when it's campy and sometimes kinda silly there's a sense of familiarity that makes you want more and go back.
There are lots of moments of humanity, simple and their behaviors are endearing.
Chicks can be sassy and all but can often show signs of vulnerability and really touching moments. They craft good characters even sometimes let's be real, out of assembly lines, but I dig it!

Literally just finished watching it and loved every minute. There's more emotional payoff in this 12 episode series than there is in 14 years of MCU. Brilliant storytelling. Even the 'bad' characters are fun and engaging. You'll think with a lot of them, "I know a guy/girl like that." I think I'll stick with Korean series' for a while, they know what they're doing, and it's all new and exciting stuff that seems to be getting produced.

I was hoping that someone would reference this, I'm more a manga fan than manhwa but the odd story I've read has been great.

Same! I'm hoping for more physical media to be available for purchase to further support webtoons. I'm hoping the market opens for western translations of manhwa and light novels. I've noticed that Japanese light novels are quickly hitting the western market.
