A lovely piece of history there sir. Thank you for your video.
YW - thanks for the note - Dennis
I have at least 20 Fenwicks most classic glass. I just love them. I found a 1960 model 255 with the sleeve and cardboard tube at a yardsale. My treasure.
Very nice! They are great rods. I understand that there was a series of Fenwick rods made for Sears in the 1960s. I've seen some gold blanks that I was told were for the Sears line. Do you know anything about those? - Dennis
thanks dennis cool history lesson
Glad you enjoyed it - Dennis
I remember being very young and always lusting after the Fenwick rods in the tackle shop. They were close to the most expensive rods in the store, but I wanted one so bad.
They are still high quality rods. They are now owned by Pure Fishing
@@2ndChanceTackle unfortunately made in China thank you for taking the time and putting out such quality content. I enjoy your videos.👍👍
I’m glad I found your channel.

Awesome, thank you! I appreciate the note and the sub. Best wishes - Dennis
I love this type of video. Your videos on the history of fishing reel companies have been superb! Considering all the vintage reels I have I own very few vintage fishing rods. I have about ten rods I really like and I just change out reels on them all the time. It is a far cry for experts who go to great lengths to match the perfect rod for a particular reel. I only owned one Fenwick and I manage to break it. This was a very interesting video Dennis!
Glad you like them Chris - I am always trying o learn more on the industry - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle I’ve been guessing that we are about the same age. I might be a few years older. I think what you’ve done with your UA-cam channel is truly amazing. Numerous people have been urging me just to start a channel showing and demonstrating all my vintage spinning reels but I’m very intimidated by the technology and how many others are doing something similar. Also my vision hampers me. I have no problem speaking on video because in my work I was often speaking and performing in front of crowds of often more than 600 people. I’m saying all this just to commend you on what you have accomplished and your clear mission of giving fishing reels a second chance. There is no one doing what you’re doing. You have a lot of talent as well as a clear direction and mission for your channel. To some it may seem counter-intuitive because you are teaching folks to do for themselves what you do in your business. I think the opposite is probably true and you’re getting more business due to your channel. In short what you are giving the UA-cam community is a priceless gift that is truly unique. I would never do a UA-cam channel even though I love to show off my reels. - Chris
@@christopherjenkins2373 Well said Chris, what I would like Dennis to do is a Q and A about reels he he did not feature as a video because they were too valuable to service or he may have broken a piece or part, we always see the great outcome of the re-builds and services he provides , but what about the epic fails??? I want to see them too, because I've been there, many times, and it hurts to end a vintage reels life, but it happens , and I would love to see the outtakes of that!
@@pennyan2057 Have you suggested this to Dennis? I wouldn’t mind seeing that either. He has had more than a few fails but none were his fault. Usually they were caused by unavailable parts or support or missing parts. There is a human side to working on reels and I sometimes certainly screw up. Maybe a blooper reel would be fun! - Chris
@@christopherjenkins2373 You're right , nobody means to break anything, myself being the most careful, calculated, tool in hand person, but still, poop happens!!, just like to know what Dennis explains to his customers when it does.
Thank You, Professor Dennis..very insightful !!!
Best Regards,
Cons
Thanks Cons - hope all is well. We are getting AZ like here in NJ with all the humidity you could ask for! Yuk!
Love Fenwick. Thanks for the history lesson! Always on point.
You bet! Glad you enjoyed it - Dennis
Nice video Dennis.
Glad you enjoyed it
Dennis you got that right Ocean City Maryland is a great place.
It is. We enjoyed our stay there this summer - Thanks
Love to hear the history. Thanks Dennis!
Glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes for great fishing - Dennis
Fenwick rods remind me of the movie
The Mouse that Roared and the duchy
of Grand Fenwick. The Jaws rod was a.
Fenwick.
Hmmm - makes sense - they did make the big broomsticks for trolling. Dennis
Very happy to see this video. I, too own a few Fenwick's, fly and spin. Just got back from a week in Ontario catching ridiculous amounts of walleye on the FS-70. The old fiberglass rods are great.
Yes they are! I still fish my St Croix Viking rods and have had no reason to switch over the years - Dennis
Dennis, the reasoning for the large number of companies making fiberglass parts in the PNW is thanks to Boeing.
Most of the manufacturers made fiberglass parts for aircraft and when they would lose a contract, looked at other products they could produce with the skill set they had.
The only Fenwick rods I owned were offshore trolling rods. They were as stiff as a telephone pole and weighed a ton compared to what is produced today.
Graphite came into vogue because of the stiffness and light weight. Graphite is available as a directional product, so it was easy to add plys in the direction where stresses were high where strength was needed.
Last time I checked on Fenwick, they moved their rod production to the PRC. The engineering is/was done here, but Pure Fishing is all about profits.
Thanks for the additional information - Makes sense - Dennis
Don’t forget Vic Johnson’s book that was written about history of Fenwick rods. It’s out of print and hard to find, but one piece from the book that is easy to find on the internet, is the segment on how to date the fly rods (year of manufacture) based on the letter in the serial number. Yes, there is really no connection between that company and Pure Fishing, they merely bought the name to support sales of their new products. But being a big fan and collector of the old Fenwick fly rods, I just had to buy one of the newer Fenglass models designed by Pure Fishing. They really aren’t too bad in quality, especially the 7 1/2’ size and shorter models. But still, the old models from early 1960s to mid 1970s are such a blast to fish with when paired with the right line and reel.
Thank you for the additional information. I am a reel guy and my knowledge of the rods is very limited. I appreciate the additional information - Dennis
My favorite rod is a Fenwick lunkerstik that belonged to my grandfather, I think it's an 80's rod.
It's a lighter weight medium action 6' rod , has an action I really like and is a great general purpose rod.
I like to use a Mitchell 308 or Shakespeare 2052EC on it.
The Lunkerstik is one of the most famous of the Fenwick line. It was the first bass specific rod made to gain popularity. - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle that's probably why I saw the same model I have being listed for a premium on ebay.
Mine had an foam grip that deteriorated, so I replaced it with a cork handle and some aluminum Tennessee rings.
The Tennessee handle is such a great unappreciated setup, especially with the heavier vintage reels because it allows for better balance.
And it's hard to find a modern rod that'll fit the large foot on the Mitchell 308.
Thanks Dennis , another learning experience, I have and use many vintage Fenwick rods, and as far as I'm concerned, nothing beats a solid strand fiberglass rod, so what they're heavier, nothings going to break them, or stand up to the abuse of everyday fishing!, not sure how I feel about Pure Fishing taking everything over, in the past, variety of mfgrs. were the spice of life , today it seems like it's Pure Fishing or nothing, that's why I fish with countless vintage brands, Keep the brand history coming, as we can ALL learn.
I think the more the better. Limiting competition through mergers just limits innovation - Thanks
Dennis, just guessing but think we’re about same age. Lot of guys dreamed of having a Fenwick rod when I was young. I got a pacificstik at a garage sale and put a Zebco on it for bass in the local ponds lol. What I wouldn’t give for that rod today. You’re the best, thx.
Thanks Bob. I suspect we are in the same class too. I often wish I had some of the rods and reels I used back in the day! Then again, be careful what you wish for. I wished I had a VW beetle, which I used to work on in the late 60s. I got one in the 80s and forgot just how badly they drove and how nothing seemed to stay working for very long! - Dennis
My favorite rods I own are my Fenwick HMG inshore rods
These are treasures. Thanks
Started out at a house in a garage next to Fenwick Lake, Kent Washington.
Yes it did! Thanks
Cool I love ugly stik rods n Penn reels
My 3rd combo I still have it
I fish the Ugly Sticks as well. Shakespeare has a long history of great rods including the Wonderrod - Dennis
Also heard the worker who mixed the formula for the YellowJacket Model had quit the job on a money dispute with the company, then come to find out he had one of the best mixtures of Fiberglass ever produced back then, but didn't know it until years later when rods were fished enough to get a true analysis, He left Fenwick with his secret formula and joined a competitor, pretty sure it was True Temper, so it tuns out, the man was worth his weight in Gold!
Interesting - I had not heard that. Thanks - Dennis
Sounds like an urban legend. Anything developed while in the employ of fenwick would likely be their intellectual property. Those yellow/gold fenwick surf rods were really nice. I fish glass from the beach 95% of the time.
@@surfcat2051 Correct, probably why he did'nt become famous at the new company...lol
Can you talk about and describe wich rod is the Fenwick rod used to make the movie " JAW´s " ? Thank you .
I don't know the specifics of that rod. Sorry
Sad thing Pure Fishing now owns Zebco
Close - Zebco is owned by Rather products - Lew's and Quantum. Zebco sold off Fin-Nor and Van Steal to Pure fishing when them made the change to Rather. Thanks Rick
@@2ndChanceTackleyou are correct Dennis I get them two mixed up thanks for setting me straight.
What is with the bots on this channel
It's just about every channel not just 2nd chance tackle. I get 4-6 replies a day from spambots.
Don't use one swear word, else UA-cam will smack you, but post tens of thousands of spam messages, and life is good.
I need to report and erase these every day. What's the use, they come back the next!
