or as they're known stealerships I refuse to go to my local Ford dealer (its literally next door to my place of work) after they quoted me £80 for diagnostics (just plug in) and £130 for the inspection(aka 'this is what we found' report). my regular guy is a mobile mechanic, he'll charge me £60 all in, plug in and poke and prod based on what he suspects
Yep, "stealerships" are a plague. I can commiserate. In the late 1970s, I owned a 1968 AMC AMX, a nifty little two-seat hot rod ponycar. It had a Chrysler auto transmission. At one point, it began weirdly shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear at a narrow range of speeds. I took it to a transmission shop. Mechanic checks it, and tells me I need a new tranny, some $1,500 at that time. Being a young Airforce lower enlisted guy, this wasn't affordable! Then another mechanic, same shop, test drives it. He told me all I needed was a "kickdown switch", a five dollar part connected to the tranny linkage. I unplugged the bad switch, and it drove perfectly! All that switch did was kick down to a lower gear when hitting the throttle hard, like to pass. I bought the new switch, but never got around to changing it out. This tranny was AMC's "Shift Command" model, designed to be shifted manually. I drove it often like a manual. Never had trouble after that. That honest second mechanic saved me a boatload of money! I always got a second opinion after that. I also learned to do a lot of my own mechanical work, especially when AMC went under and their dealerships switched to Dodge. Suddenly no pro mechanics could remember how to work on AMC cars.
I truly hope that you went to that con artist of a dealers Google and Yelp site and shared this info in a review for them so future customers don't get scammed. I'd also report it with the BBB. I guarantee they have a pattern of doing this.
I think I would contact BBB about the dealership fraud attempt. Plus I'd notify the dealership and file a formal complaint. It sounds like they say a young female and attempted to defraud you. Perhaps the dealership has a Yelp page or even Facebook for customers to comment. I'm so glad you were diligent and are back on the road. I'd post a positive comment everywhere for the honest AAA approved mechanic. That breakfast looked yummy!
This! This! This! I would definitely be contacting someone (at the very least the dealership to tell them that they are liars and obviously willing to commit fraud)! Definitely don't let this go! But I am glad that you finally found someone honest and they saved the day! (And your bank account)!
BBB does absolutely nothing. They're just a commercial company that keeps list of bad customer interactions. This serves no purpose unless you check with them first as they do nothing to solve consumer complaints.
imagine what they tried to put on you! B*stards. How really clever and lucky you were kept on searching for the opinion and proficiency of a honest mechanic. But trust me, they try it all over the world and even with men when they THINK they can. Good thing the honest ones are also out there.
In fairness, it probably wasn't intentional fraud. More likely it was just incompetence. They read a code and the computer tells them it's likely A, B or C so they quote for worst case scenario. It's not how it should be done, but I don't think it would be to take advantage of a young female, more so to cover the bases when the "mechanic" doesn't know what they are doing.
I hope you went back to the con dealership and showed them that text. I also hope you put them in their place. Oh by the way, it's nice to see a honest young lady like you that is returning all the donates you received. Some people;e would have kept the money and kept their mouth shut.
I honestly don’t know why, but this video touched me… I was a single parent who got screwed by mechanics repeatedly. The fact you not only stuck to your gut, and WON! I so appreciate that. I am so full of joy for you. Love watching your videos, and in someway gives me peace. Xo keep going girl… your mama raised you right!
I'm so glad you kept trying! I live in a van and recently had a very similar experience. Mechanic tried to charge me for a bunch of things he said were "missing" from my vehicle and they're all there. Just needed to be plugged in. -- Jason
OMG! You sure dodged a bullet on that one. $8,000 … that is a lot of money! Thanks for posting and helping others to be vigilant as well. Glad it worked out for you!
Thank you for mentioning the name of the honest mechanic. I have a diesel as well and will stop by there for service next time I’m in town. So glad everything worked out. Happy trails.
Congrats on continuing to search for help. Just a bit of info.... Gas burners have catalytic converters, diesel has SCR, (selective catalyst reduction) and DPF ( diesel particulate filter) as emission controls. The SCR does the heavy lifting, in conjunction with DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) the DPF collects soot. A sensor being unplugged or a loose connection is job 1 in troubleshooting. The same symptom can arise from a failed sensor as they are exposed to the exhaust stream ( soot, heat, burned and unburned fuel), a pretty intense environment. You may be better served in the future by seeking truck repair or diesel performance shops to scan for codes, and troubleshoot. Great channel, I've been binging the videos... Stay safe and happy!
Good for you! This happens everyday to unknowing people. You can purchase a little Bluetooth OBD2 thing to see what the engine light/codes are yourself. $25-$99+. I have used one called Blue Driver. Most will do Diesel engines too. Linked free app App displays issues on your phone.
I am so glad it worked out as it did. I would definitely write a letter to the dealership owners and a copy to the manufacturer of what actually needed to be done, with the cost difference. Have a wonderful weekend and keep traveling.
I’m so sorry that you had to deal with a dealership that was trying to rip you off. I’m very glad to hear that you went elsewhere and discovered that it was a minor issue. Definitely post your experience on reviews so others are warned.
Finding service on the road is quite the challenge. I had a simple repair that literally took 8 mins to fix, but spent 4 days trying to find someone to do it. Glad everything worked out for you!
WHAT AWESOME LUCK!!!!!!!!! The Universe has DEFINITELY provided for you in a VERY MIRACULOUS WAY!!!!!!!!! And I admire your Honesty and Integrity for refunding Money back to those who donated to you!!!!!!!!! Don't be surprised if The Universe gives you some of that Money right back because of your Attitude of Gratitude!!!!!!!!! My Van Battery died once due to trying to keep My Phone and Electronics charged (and stupidly not running it enough to NOT drain the main and only battery... LESSON LEARNED) and also intermittently gives Me some trouble when trying to start it... When this happened, I thought of you and your previous video about a Van Lifer's Worst Nightmare!!! I am SOOO HAPPY and THANKFUL that we are BOTH ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!!!!!!!! 😃👍👍
I Just Subscribed Yesterday & Have Been Watching Travel Channels For At Least The Last 6 Years. Today You Are One Of My Most Respected UA-camrs! It Is Admirable That You Gave The Money Back!! Thank You For Being You!!! Hugs To The Both Of You!!!;
I was so afraid of that. I'm so glad you did the research and didn't take their word for it. Man, that grinds my gears, b/c I'd bet money they'd have told me something very different: also deceitful, but very different, b/c I'm a middle aged man.
Glad your van is good and that you shared this lesson so that others, like me, will know to get more than one quote if I find myself in similar circumstances.. Also, happy you're returning the donations sent specifically for the repair. That's important.
Glad you got your van sorted Maddie. Always pays to get second and third opinions on mechanical issues, i have learned this the hard way being ripped off from dishonest mechanics. Take care......David from England UK.
Good for you!! That makes me SO angry that unscrupulous dealers are literally conning people!! So happy for you that it all worked out in the end! Persistence really paid off. Great lesson for all of us!
Dealerships = Stealerships. Glad you found an honest shop. You’re honest as well that you are returning donations that were made for repairs. Stay safe and happy travels.
Girl I’m so happy it worked out I just watched your worst day every video yesterday and I was stressing out 😭 I obviously didn’t check the date so I thought it was current and was freaking out like you wouldn’t want to do van life after this 😭😭😭😭 so glad it turned out $8,000 better
Hi Maddie , here in the UK we have a Trading Standards Authority . They are there so situation you have highlighted with that spurious estimate for repairs can be reported ! . If you have a similar set-up where you are ? , you should inform them accordingly . I can't believe a mechanic at a dealership would miss that un plugged sensor ? . The service manager must have made a decision to basically try and steal money from you ,for parts and labour that are not required !!!!!! . They should be named and shamed , not worthy of the dealership franchise . This story highlights the need for you solo vanlifers to be on social media . To be able to interact with a network of people, who are able to offer advice , which at least informs you of options you may not be aware of ? , and end up spending money where its not needed . So glad you did the right thing ,and didn't panic yourself into going with the dealerships dodgy estimate ! Happy travels for the future Maddie .
Right now going thru this. $8100.00 at Dodge dealer but only $3529.00 at my regular mechanic. Another Dodge dealer wanted $1100.00 for a bad alternator. I did it with changing my belt and lifetime warranty on alternator for $149.00.
This is so spot on. I have a sprinter van and it had a recall done on it. Long story short they broke my van and then try to say I did it at a tune of $8000. I fought it and had it repaired under warranty. So don’t let stealerships try and take you. Thanks for the video.
So happy for your outcome with the van! It had to be a stressful time for you! People do care about your well-being! You seem to have had a great weight lifted from your heart! So nice to see your beautiful smile and lighthearted self again!
So happy that you got fixed up so well and affordable. Still start using Max Mileage, it's available at certain truckstops, online get it from Pittsburgh Power. 1 ounce per 25 gallons.
I'm so happy you didn't end up getting ripped off. I am so jealous of anyone living your lifestyle but stuff like this reminds me having my honest dealership handy is so valuable. I hope you contact the manager of the person to quote you cause hopefully it's just an idiot employee not the entire dealership. My neighbors vehicle broke down, she took it to a small garage a minutes walk from us, I told her I really hoped she wouldn't regret it, unfortunately she did. It's not just big dealership that like to rip people off. It really boils my attitude and that isn't a good thing
It’s such an outrageous price. I couldn’t even do the math on dollars in Danish kroner. When I could I was shocked. Good thing another mechanic had the right price and service for you.
Valuable lesson! I just purchased my van - and the mechanic around the corner telling me it needs 4000 USD worth of repairs - I got that reduced from the asking price so I am ready to pay that but I will drive into two more mechanics over the next weeks to get second opinions. Your outcome is probably the most insane ends of the spectrum!
I agree I had that happen to me this spring and I went for a second opinion and saved myself over 1400 bucks the second mechanic said I didn't need any of the things that the other mechanic said I needed.
@@seattlerain4809 What a great tip. Sadly doesn't apply to me as I am getting a car that is not sold in Europe. I haven't seen a Honda dealership that will touch an american car here aside from some basics (apparently different tools needed). But I am going to a Ford dealership that is also official partner with the US part of the company and looks after US cars. My exerience with a car in the past though was that smaller mechanics in little towns are more thorough and often do services for their repeat customers for free and are more concerned about customer service to foster long term relationships. So my second place I go to will be a small town US Car and Oldtimer repair shop. I have a feeling they will take care of a 93 Ford Econoline with a lot of passion
You can also buy an OBD II code reader and check things like that for yourself following the instructions. And if the engine has a turbocharger be sure to let the engine idle for at least 1 minute before turning the engine off, especially after driving on the highway. Doing that will protect/save the turbocharger from breaking down. Nice to hear that this worked out well for you. Have a nice trip 🙂
Yay! Happy to hear it was simple. And thank you for making me aware of the donation link! I've set up a monthly donation. Also, your food always looks so damn good. If I were traveling with you I'd exchange your cooking for me doing all the dishes :P
It is good that your van is up and running😃 It is usually something simple, I am happy that this was the case. Eliza looks like she is having a good time.😄 Safe travels😁😁😁👌👍
That absolutely "sucks"! I am so glad that you did not have to do the repair! A few years ago I had my Catalytic converter replaced, for about $1200. Cdn. Then a few months later a small part broke in the I think start motor, while I was driving. I had it towed to my own dealer and cost to repair was $2500. and again the Catalytic Converter needed to be replaced. I had to figure it out quick. The car was coming up quickly on 300,000 km so I junked it and bought a good used car. They did give me a very good deal and I continue to use this dealer, because they have always been fair......but after what you are telling us, maybe that small part was at fault in the first place. Buyer beware! Where you video taped, it is beautiful! Can you tell us where you were! Beautiful campsite! Also, so glad you have a friend in Anna! The two of you support each other well! Take care and have a good week! ❤ Eileen
The Ram Promaster Forum is a good resource too. Common problems are known in advance and consumer diagnosis is possible. I think the diesel was 2014 only, so develop your network for it. Scan tool, tire plug kit and good pump is always on board for myself and others.
For peace of mind in the future, you might consider buying a scanner/ code reader at a auto parts store so you can check the codes when they show up and if necessary reset them in order to drive to a reputable repair shop in case you are in the middle of nowhere. The scanner I purchased some time ago allows me to read and research the codes online, saved me some aggravation over time.
Wow, GOOD for you to keep trying and following your feelings! A Toyota dealership told me I needed new brakes at my next oil change. I got a second opinion and my brakes were fine for several years!
Hey there!!! Good but hard lesson learned!!! Go to a good parts store (Autozone) and have them show you a good trouble code computer to buy for your van and have them show you how to use it, they are very easy to use. You can find all the information about the trouble codes online. By being able to see the trouble from where you are will give you a good idea of what’s wrong. Most mechanics hate these trouble code readers because it educates the vehicle owners and makes them be more honest. Keep rolling!!!
I hate dealerships. I believe that they make much more money on their repair shops than they do selling vehicles. I hate that they tried to prey on you and glad you persisted until you found an honest shop!!! Kudos to you!
Yippie! I fell asleep and missed the great news from the reputable mechanic. Luckily I went back and heard the unplugged news. I love heroin warrior success stories.
Wow !!!! Great news that you were able to get repairs done by an honest mechanic. But it is so disappointing that there are so many rip- off people out there. Stay safe and well. Cheers
I'm happy about the outcome. I would suggest building/having a healthy emergency fund. I don't know about a 8k emergency fund, but whatever amount that can keep your expenses for a while.
Same happened to me at the beginning of month. Dealership advised that i would have to pay $3500 for a new catalytic converter & two o2 sensors. Dealt with another mechanic years ago, called them up they advised to add premium gas for the next 3 fillups and the engine light will disappear. Engine light disappeared on 2nd refill, bit expensive for premium but no where near $3500 or even $400. Good luck in your van!!!
Wow, what this video says about "integrity" and "perseverance! Good for you to continue pursuing other options and shame on that dealership. Way to go Maddie.
oh I'm so thrilled that you solved your problem inexpensively; and that I may have been part of the solution by recommending AAA certified mechanic. A dealer abused me so bad once, such that I felt that by reaching out to a AAA certified shop I'd be in better hands. And I was. I've been going to them ever since! Lesson learned: I imagine there is in this aside from the obviou--dont trust a dealership whose probably source of revenue is repairs. I was delighted once again by your introductory poetic prose--you'll write a book one day, I am sure of it! Once again, however, you make such delish looking dishes and don't post the recipe. I have a jeep with a refrig. in the back and I tend to use it as a freezer to store meat. therefore, I can't store fresh veges, sauces or things of the like. I sure would be interested in variety in my diet and your source of protein in it! Other than sharing your delicous looking recipes, I'd like to add that I believe you could creat an adjunct to your existing channel about how to eat vegan (with an eye to getting all proteins while living out of a 45 liter fridge). Please consider the either or. You could accoumplish the former with the notes as you did in this about the mayonnaise! Thank you Maddie, and may God continue to watch over your travels!
Woo hoo that makes me so happy that it’s not something that’s super expensive and that it was just something that needed to be plugged back in but watching your channel thank you for being an inspiration much love from Oregon
I subscribed because you seem pretty genuine and down to earth. Not to many good people out there but you are definitely one of them. Keep up the good work!
This is why I don't go to dealers at all unless I'm buying a vehicle. One time I went to the dealer for an oil change cause they had a deal going on them and they gave me an estimate for over 3000 dollars in repairs and I said no way my brother and I fixed one thing and that took 5 minutes or less and the other things I had to fix I didn't do the truck was fine for several years up til I bought my jeep. There's a word for dealerships people call them stealerships lol. I'm also glad that you got a second opinion.
Kale has kept many mountain people and more alive who do not have access to food other than the land they have. In the mountain areas, it can be grown year-round with some luck. Of course many also will harvest in-season meat too. Living hand to mouth is not easy but it is honest and honorable. Thank you for your fun shows. :)
Maddie, thanks for sharing and I'm so happy that it turned out the way it did. How can some people live with themselves? Baffles me and they need to be reported so they don't continue to do the same to others. Nonetheless, in moments of despair, there can always be hope if you look for it. You have exemplified that. Sending you good vibes, Stay Safe and Warm. :-)
Wow!! That's so messed up. I know dealerships are normally more pricey, but I always put my trust in them that they wouldn't screw me. I've been scammed multiple times by mechanics around town, so I ended up going to my Kia dealership. This saddens me. I'm so glad you trusted your gut though!
Wooow jeeej! So good to hear. That dealership was just an a**! Good for you to keep calling and checking with other places before spending all that money.
OH MY GOODNESS. YOU HAVE BEEN ON MY MIND ALL WEEK LADY! I FELT SO BAD FOR YOU. AND I DIDN'T WANT YOU TO QUIT VAN LIFE. IM SO GLAD YOU MADE THE DECISIONS YOU MADE. IM QUITE ANGRY WITH THAT DEALERSHIP!! I HOPE YOU EXPOSED THEM!
I would post this everywhere. That is typical dealership attempted theft. Oh, yay!
or as they're known stealerships

I am so happy that everything turned out. I so enjoy your stories and adventures. You are truly inspiring. ❤️

@@seattlerain4809 I had a Honda and they did not repair for life ever.
@@seattlerain4809 also my son currently has a Honda in Seattle and they still don’t repair for life.
Such a great lesson for all of us with vans. So happy for you Maddie that it has all worked out so well
Glad you’re vans running ok
Glad ur van is running again. Enjoy watching ur videos. Take care.
Very noble of you returning the donations 👍🏼👍🏼
You can also buy an OBD II code reader and check things like that for yourself following the instructions.
And if the engine has a turbocharger be sure to let the engine idle for at least 1 minute before turning the engine off, especially after driving on the highway. Doing that will protect/save the turbocharger from breaking down. Nice to hear that this worked out well for you. Have a nice trip 🙂
Not all dealerships are deceptive but some are. Good job Maddy!
Yum, breakfast looks so delicious!
Cheer up everything will work itself out. You are a beautiful soul and God is on your side. 🌷
Yay! Happy to hear it was simple. And thank you for making me aware of the donation link! I've set up a monthly donation.
Also, your food always looks so damn good. If I were traveling with you I'd exchange your cooking for me doing all the dishes :P
Wow ! Amazing how some will take advantage ! So happy that you got a second opinion ! ❤️this video great lesson
It is good that your van is up and running😃 It is usually something simple, I am happy that this was the case. Eliza looks like she is having a good time.😄 Safe travels😁😁😁👌👍
OMG…. The thing was unplugged?!?! Such a lesson for all of us! 💜
Awe...best news ever! You give hope for many in this situation!💜🤗💜
❤

Good on you for being persistent. So glad it was something simple.
so good that you found a good second opinion! so glad it turned out that way!
This is why dealerships are called Stealerships. So glad it worked out properly and honestly for you.
I'm glad that worked out for you! I've been thinking of you all week, but didn't know how to help, These modern vehicles are beyond me!
The Force is with you ok? You are by far one of the nicest people I’ve come across. Rock on and we’re all right behind you. 🤘🏽👊🏽
...and also with you! :)
So glad it was a simple repair and a good lesson for all of us to shop around.
I'm so happy that you never gave up and that your still able to fallow your dreams
Wow, GOOD for you to keep trying and following your feelings! A Toyota dealership told me I needed new brakes at my next oil change. I got a second opinion and my brakes were fine for several years!
Wow I just found this channel and its about all I’ve watched the last two days and returning all the donations is a classy thing to do
Hey there!!!
Great News! Good things happen to good people.
You are an honest person . Nice going.
Just started watching your channel.. love it! And I’m so proud of you for listening to your gut!
So glad to hear you got sorted out and are still on the road. X
I got one of these LAUNCH CR3001 OBD2 Scanner Code Reader for under $25 from eBay and it is top rated.

Way to go with your gut Maddie. Glad all is well with your van.
I'm so happy for you ! Prayers answered! God bless! ❤❤❤
I would call the dealership and tell them this. That’s great news. Well done!!!
Woo hoo that makes me so happy that it’s not something that’s super expensive and that it was just something that needed to be plugged back in but watching your channel thank you for being an inspiration much love from Oregon
So glad you went elsewhere. That was tooooo much money.,.. safe travels to you and your cute doggie.❤️
You did great! A valuable teaching moment to all...thanks!
I subscribed because you seem pretty genuine and down to earth. Not to many good people out there but you are definitely one of them. Keep up the good work!
:') thank you!
Wow 🤩you find very beautiful places!
Thank you for sharing this information, I loved to read it :)
I'm so glad you trusted your gut though!
i’m so glad you kept on trying! also the childhood story was very sweet
