- Just back in December, Kalen King was considered a first round pick in the 2024 NFL draft after a crazy start to his Penn State career. Sadly, he fell all the way to the 7th round and had an epic stock crash. Today, we are going to talk about the rise of Kalen King, why he got so much hype and why his stock died, enjoy!

That's the most overrated metric in the NFL. He has an elite shuttle at 3.94 as a high school kid. He still ran a 4.51 in his pro day but an elite 1.51 10 yard split and a 37 inch vert. He's an explosive and agile athlete. That's vastly more important than a straight-line 40 yard dash which is a route he'll almost never face as the slot DB.
The fact that he qas the best CB in his class in 22 has elite burst and agility should be enough to make him a first to second round CB. His ball skills are elite. I think he got lazy after seeing his first round projections and didn't train as hard as he used too and fell for the hype. The receivers started to toast him, he lost confidence and then it just kept getting worse. He's motivated more so than ever now. He's going to start obliterating dudes in OTA's and preseason soon.
Rasul Douglas ran a 4.62 at the combine yet is a top 5 CB in the NFL. Burst, agility and ball skills are vastly more important than straight line speed in tights. Kalen is a faster player on the field than in tights on a track.
Subpar 2023 season (gave up nearly 83% QBR rating when targeted), poor combine results, and got cooked a lot at the Senior Bowl dropped his stock. Def think he should’ve stayed another year

He ran a 4.5 forty at his pro day which is a little better 😅 Definition of low risk high reward pick being he was 3rd to last pick in the draft.
Packers have had a good track record taking guys lately that have been better their 2nd to last season than they were their last season. Love, Wicks, Reed just to name a few had way better 2nd to last seasons compared to their last season in college & has paid off for them. Hopefully this is another one for them 🤞🏽

I played against him in high school 3 years in a row, my team is the guys in the yellow jerseys and red pants, this man is a monster and slept on like crazy, wouldn’t be shocked if he becomes an all time draft steal, he’s amazing ngl

I don’t think so. Purdy got measurably better through all four years. King got worse. I think the only thing they have in common is being drafted in the seventh round. Miracles can happen.

You can’t apply this logic to a corner, relative to a QB…. Not the same, you can expose a CB way easier and faster against top WRs …

4.61 speed and a regression year on your draft declaring season as a #1 corner from when you were a #2 the previous year just killed his draft stock. Homie got cooked a lot this past season. Still should have gone in the 4-5th round. But many teams take regression as a sign that you're trending downward.
He should of played in peach bowl against elite wr talent and if had great game skipped combine would of helped him a lot.

Scheme issues? Sounds more like it. To many negatives in draft process, will happen to anyone, and whoever impresses stocks will rise. Don't mean that is the true definition.

Maybe the people forecasting King being a 1st round pick didn't know what the hell they were talking about.
Or maybe just maybe he was having probably about as good of a year that a cb could have year 1 and had a disaster year 2. Go from a year it seemed like he could do no wrong to a year he seemed like he could do nothing right. The Packers made a very safe practically zero risk but potentially very high reward if his Sophmore version turned out to be who he truly is as a player. If his Junior year is his true version of himself well so be it. You spent a 7th round damn near last pick on him. Missing there isn't bad at all. On the other hand hitting there is massive.
