- The quest of learning in public with Personal Knowledge Management is really about making what you learn observable and exposing your process, rather than your result, early and often. This is a rendition of a talk I gave at the PKM Summit in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on March 23rd, 2024, and it relates concepts borrowed from performance engineering and software development to PKM systems.

I gave this talk at the PKM Summit and since it wasn't recorded, I wanted to recreate it for you here! Sorry this is a longer one! Feel free to use the timestamps to jump around.
I had to pause this video half way through because I wanted to comment… through falling down a random rabbit hole of videos about note taking apps & learning to take notes (2nd brain stuff) I found my way to your channel. And Holy MOTHER OF GOD am I grateful that I did. I am in the process of launching a new UA-cam Channel about something I am EXTREMELY passionate about but am also still learning about. Finding this video has given me such a feeling of validation or confirmation? I have never heard about this idea of “learning in public” and it’s so incredibly refreshing! This is EXACTLY what I want to do. I also literally learned about Obsidian two days ago for the first time! Had never heard of it until then! I can’t believe it. The thing that has always frustrated me about Evernote & Notion is that I want to be able to visualize my notes better and the graph view is something I think I have been dreaming about forever! 😩😩😭 I’m super intimidated by Obsidian at the moment because I am not a programmer & know jack squat about coding etc (obsidian seems like something a lot of programmers use?) but I KNOW this is a system I have been searching for. I’ve watched a few videos of yours before this one (currently binging a lot of your videos 😭) and THIS ONE is blowing my mind. I’m so new to all of this and it’s a bit overwhelming but I think I have found my people. I just want to thank you for introducing me to so many new ideas!!! Having Ah-ha moments after AH-HA MOMENTS while watching this. THANK YOU! I feel like my life is changing before my eyes 🤣😭🙌 I’m so excited! You are a great presenter & teacher btw! Amazing work! 👏👏👏💖💕
In case you haven’t dived into obsidian yet: I’ve been using it for just over a year (still learning), and have been using it more recently. Such a great tool, and I still don’t know jack squat of coding. The community surrounding Obsidian is very helpful when any level of programming is needed. When I have needed some level of “programming”, I usually only need to hit an “install” button for a community plug in, or just copy and paste stuff. Lots of helpful tutorials and guides out there too.
Love this video, Nicole. The "make something" part also reminds me of our agile/lean software appraoch of MVPs as Minimum Viable Products, or more recently MLPs as Minimum Lovable Products. Or as Lean Startup talks about, the smallest experiment you can put out that can give you validated learning.
That's so interesting! Many of the ideas you mention are resonating with what I was currently reading about Lawrence Halprin's RSVP Cycles and stage director Robert Lepage's creative process that is inspired by it, the Repère Cycles. RSVP and Repère see the creative process as something that is not linear but cyclic in nature, where performance is not a final result but just one stage of a process that is constantly evolving, and that can be implemented by feedback, new ideas and explorations. In his presentation of the RSVP Cycles, Halprin actually describes it as "a way to make the creative process visible", which feels very connected with what you say about observability. Love it when concepts from different spaces collide. :)

Thank you Nicole :-) Possibly your best video to date, for me! Your content is always informative and impactful , and for me has invariably made a real practical impact upon my life; sometimes in small ways, and more often in more profound. Your content on this channel is a living example of what you teach in this video: I will re-visit this as I think more about this material in the days ahead.
Can I just also say that I am so pleased that I was able this evening to sit and listen to you speak to 'me' here, with graphics that help me visualize your what you are saying, rather than distract me from what I wanted to focus upon, you.
It was refreshing to have no music, pop-up graphics with sound-effects or other distractions. I want to pay attention to someone when they are sharing something with me, or teaching me something, and I have never understood the predilection for UA-camrs to crowbar-in extraneous 'stuff'. We would never do so in real life if we were talking to colleagues or friends :-)
Wow! Thank you so much for that comment, Colin! I'm so touched by what you said and happy that I've been able to make even a small impact on your life. What you said about the abundance of motion graphics and effects gives me pause. Maybe I should experiment with making more videos along the style of this one, where I really just recorded this in one take and didn't add any extra graphics. Happy that it felt more personal to you.
@@nicolevdh It was far more personal for me Nicole. I think the trend/style of production that included off-key piano and pop-up images etc. is now waning, as I see more and more established UA-camrs are dropping it. After all, who would put music behind their voice that few people would go out and buy LOL (Absolutely no offense intended). I hope you can experiment with future videos, without any negative impact upon your viewing figures.

@@colinbrookes8625 and the background music, during the 'talk/content' is just disrespectful of those who might be hard of hearing, maybe lo/fi gear or just somewhere noisy.
@@timbushell8640 I can see how some might find it disrespectful, but I’m only too aware that the early tutors of producing videos on UA-cam, going back many years, encouraged new creators to put music in the background, encouraged the use of on-screen graphics and sound effects to increase their viewing figures. I know that many of those who offered courses on producing UA-cam videos were trying to bring over the professionalism of production values from TV to UA-cam.
And that's a wrap! Great video! and I have to say You are a amazing and your explanations are so awesomely well presented and paced through at an easy to follow pace. Thank you! Also I wish there were more testers that did this kind of work as I see so many projects that work fine when everything is fast and clean (internet) but when things slow down or routes get slow things break and its unto operations to attempt to fix and is not considered something that is needed to hardened in the design and coding groups.

"Break it", oh, yes, and yes majo the processes or their performance transparent is great, I used to do that for Buildings and particularly for data centres, hospitals and a few 'one-off' buildings. Great fun, and thanks for the risk in giving the longer than normal 'answers'. As an ex-designer and ex-operator, it is a joy to play and get involved with so many other teams.
Welcome back too, and it looks like you enjoyed the conference 'tour'...
And this vid IS in my daily note, with the highlights on imposter syndrome to share with others later (they should be sleeping now, but... ).
Then feedback, critique... this started before University, but was formalised at Uni, peers and faculty throw the questions and how did you get there, etc. And was then used throughout my professional life... and was great fun introducing new people, especially from other cultures, across education levels, cultures and positions. And the never 'done, done' even if you think it is, you might find the iteration on the next project/employment... and the continuous note-making now so much more natural with certain apps is the 'new' variation from the critiques from way back in the 80s.

i love the idea of sharing ideas and discussing them from multiple people who share that interest-and my be smarter and wiser than i! but. i get held back over concern about people who might steal that information and claim it as their own. most of my interests lie more in the academic realm, where this seems to be more of an issue? but i was thinking about your book: what if someone copied the notes and published them? publishing academic notes is a big thing. so maybe that’s something to consider?
I got a question. Do you know how to make a questionnaire in obsidian using js.
For instance maybe I ask "what color is the sky?"
If I type green it returns
"Wrong the answer is blue"
I need to make these questionnaires for different days of the year
Really interesting, or better, “metainteresting”
