I just installed an Auto Vox CS2 camera on the rear licence plate of my 2017 Ford Transit Connect. I first attached the camera to the licence plate, then I removed the licence plate light, then I used a file to make the corner of the light opening slightly bigger to accommodate the camera cable, ran the camera cable through, then reinstalled the licence plate light. (I think that I will put some silicone around this light now just to make sure to keep water out)....I then removed the left rear lighting unit (4 screws) to get at the reverse light. All of the wires into the rear lighting unit were black, no colours at all. So I used a multimeter to find out which wire running to the reverse light was ground and which was 12v DC. .....I then ran the camera cable back through the door and into the conduit running into the van. I then had to run the camera cable (black and red wires) out through the rubber seal into the rear lighting unit. I had to drill a tiny hole in the rubber seal to do this. Once I had the red and black camera cables ran as far as the reversing light I attached the red camera wire to the 12v wire going into the reversing light, I then attached the black camera wire to the ground wire going into the reversing light. The Auto Vox CS2 provides you with 2 little wire taps for connecting the wires. With a second person and all the tools ready to go it took about half an hour. But It took me a lot of time online to figure all this out before hand, so I hope this can be of help to anyone trying to do this in the future. P.s. camera works just great.
for £91 may as well buy a double din stereo with a screen that gives you Bluetooth,Sat nav, airplay and the ability to hook up rear view camera but either way great video none the less
Yeah a cheap Chinese one that will work when it wants a good double din will cost 300 if not more then you have all the other parts you need wires frame well over 300 in the end
Reverse parallel parking is where I think it would be most beneficial as I'll often look behind me and think I'm right on a car and when I get out there was still more space.
I'd had plugged it through one of the constant power cables giving you the camera on at all times tbh. Also mounted the camera at the bottom of the licence plate. Good vid
sweet vid. Much better to solder onto the tracks that are part of the light cluster that you show at 8:03, you just need to sand the metal for the solder to take (think it's galvanized) I put a dashcam in my rear window once, appeared to work great until I realised the liveish wifi feed had a 30 second delay LOL
I got the best rated one of Amazon for my Van's and tipper truck there clear as day if you want it on while going forward aswell wire it to your rear position lamp so when you put your side lights on it will come on simple
I had a reverse camera similar to that fitted to my number plate and had a warning from the mot inspector because it was obscuring one of my numbers, he still passed it but was a bit concerned. I have now fitted a better reverse camera which is actually incorporated into the number plate light ! Only £7 from eBay and is wired into same plugs as the old one, viewer is on my Android head unit and automatically switches on when reverse is selected 👍
I have a reverse camera on my automatic Renault Clio mk3 58 plate and would like a screen like that for mine as mine is built in the mirror but has connection that allows you to change the screen only problem with that camera though is the fact people may think it’s a satnav and smash your windows to break in and steal the thing and the camera part of mine is fixed to the license plate via a license plate holder
Outstanding review. Nice music. £46-99 on amazon right now [for 3.5" screen version]. I am planning to direct-wire one on the rh side corner of the dash. So that cigarette socket and centre of console is free for sat nav/coffee/ etc.
just bought the Auto Vox M1W .i was buying a dash cam and the rear cam was 25% off if you buy the pair ,so the price for the D5 HD 1520p dash cam was £69.99 totalling £131.98 for both, hopefully ill be fitting it over the weekend, maybe i should have watched this first lol
Got a similar gitbee branded one. eBay twenty quid. Fitted to my lwb 1961 landy. Camera up at roof height ,I can see both sides of the back and the tow ball. In the red zone I'm 2" from whatever it is. Working from my reverse light which is a dash controlled fog lamp bolt to the roof at the back I've no power steering so can't just palm steer whilst looking back. Anyway it's often steamed right up so I can't see fa backwards at all. The only issue I think I might get is grime on the camera lens ,all the road shit goes straight up the back. Could sort a relay to flick a lens cover away. We'll see.
Mad to think that in 20 years parking won't be a thing and it will basically all done by a computer, great vid James, props for being old school using the mirrors and Windows lol

Thought guillotine is a pretty tidy way of saying that. Been a domestic sparks for about 15 years. Now retired. My wife recently passed her driving test so solwly sowly, getting into being a home mechanic! You have a sub.
Fitted something like this in my car. Bought a cheap camera and a rear view mirror with a built in screen which you can get with the factory mounting points rather than fitting over the factory mirror
Great video as far as the steps involved are concerned. I'd be working on a different way to mount that screen as the suction cup thingys are useless in the hot sun...they pop with great regularity. Personally I wouldn't buy one of these. I have two cars...one has a built-in reverse screen and camera, the other doesn't. I'm an old fart so despite the screen being there I still automatically use my mirrors... Conditioning after forty years of driving! LOL!
*James, would it not be a great idea to build a small garage next to your house at the end of your driveway?* You could build one yourself or buy a building kit so that you can work dry and warm on your cars in the cold UK days? Maybe collect the money by flipping cars or with a crowdfunding?
I normally Push the metal connection between the two wires down flush with a a pair of pliers, then snap shut the hindged bit of plastic over the top of it. They aren't the best way of connecting two wires, I think that they engineer a weekness into the joint. Just my observation.
The problem's that you void your insurance by hardwiring anything which isn't original to the car. That's why I used to place the camera on rear windscreen, stick the monitor with blu tack only, and use cigarette plug to power both the camera and monitor. The camera and monitor would be on all the time but it's legal at least.
Rewired my landy from scratch. 1961 with reverse\work light ,interior lights, cigarette lighter socket, trailer socket, all wired in and now a reversing cam piggy backing on the work light. Where do I stand?( Don't care)
I just though it wise to point out that some insurers consider reversing cameras and reversing sensors (that aren’t fitted from new) to be a modification and no doubt they will quibble over any claims if you don’t declare it.
You should have jumped out and taken video of how close you were parked :-) A good application for this device would be in a van. Agree about the delay needed for moving forward but you could just wire it to 12v from ignition rather than the reverse light wire, so it stays on all the time. Hopefully all the units are paired differently. Don't want to find another driver next to you has the same device and you end up crashing your car.
Great video. I own a van with no rear windows so this would be ideal. Also I would like to fix one up high on the side to check for traffic at junctions. Has anyone fitted one on a van ???
Front and rear cameras would be a better option with separate (in line fuse) direct power switch (up for front view, centre is off, down for rear view) so you can toggle between viewing depending on the parking scenario instead of sourcing power from the reverse light feed. I am installing this configuration to a single monitor specifically to cover all options independent of dash cam. Slightly more wiring but worth the extra effort. I drive a BMW 7 series but the parking sensors are crap so I disabled the PDC module (so no nag screen notifications) and opted for my own configuration. I also chose not to attach to the windscreen for the same reason of the monitor falling off problem and chose a fixed position instead. I may upload a video showing the set up and benefits. Good video you did to help diyers get started 👍👍👍👍👍 Ps. I noticed the satnav thief comments, with the right size monitor you can position in the pull down visor area so the screen is not on display when not in use, personal choice.
I agree with wanting it to stay on for a further 10secs or so after coming out of reverse. BTW your supposed to use it in ADDITION to your mirrors and windows, not instead of ;)
Good video, cool product but too expensive £50 would be a reasonable price imo, looks like a sat nav which means broken Windows but surely navs are not that desirable now due to phones doing same job? Or mount it up near rear view mirror
