Any time a "National Hero" of such prominence dies destitute, the people of that particular nation have certainly failed in their duty to that person. The life Mlle. Marvingt lived brought prestige and honour to her country, over and over again. Her foresight and ingenuity have saved countless lives and the "Air Ambulance" will continue to save lives. For such a person to die with nothing is shameful, but to forget her would be much worse. Thank you TheHistoryGuy for remembering her and for reminding us of such an amazing person!
I think it's a bit more complicated. She was never forgotten in her old age, at least by officials. Most of her medals and distinctions were awarded late. But she was not entitled to a pension because she never really "worked" a regular job as most of her incomes in life came from books and conferences. Once she slowed down touring that circuit, money became scarce. Being alone she had no family support and given her personality, she probably never sought help. Had she asked, she probably could have been awarded some funds given her connections and history. It's not unheard of in France to find out some people are pensioned on merit. Her death was reported in "Le Monde", which is about our "Washington Post" so she still had some clout. I would bet she had too much pride to pull ropes in her favour.
John Cashwell : I totally disagree. Acquisition of wealth, property, and assets is not the most important thing to a vast number of people. From what I have read about Marie Marvingt, she didn't become an adventurer for fame, glory & wealth. She did what she did because it made her happy. I don't believe she was interested in a cosy, affluent retirement. Marie Marvingt did not die with nothing, and she was remembered after her death. As late as 2004, her life was commemorated by a French Airmail stamp.
Well said. I started reading your reply and figured it was simply to say "make a movie about her". Marvingt learned to parachute in a time that even flying in a plane was a risk. Every risk she took, every challenge she accepted eventually became practical science. Water survival, patient transport, emergency air lift, navy SEAL parachute operations. Trench war/modern war fighting. She had to perform at the highest levels and sometimes pretend to be a man so she could continue. Too bad we as society were too stupid, not ready, or too arrogant to recognize The work she did was Not just a woman accomplishing feats, it was what we in the world could be And SHOULD be doing for people... (and here is the treasure map to do it right now)
Thank You for bringing this most remarkable of women to my attention. She most definitely deserves to be remembered and a household name. An accomplished, strong, intelligent and very brave lady. Even exploits disguised as a male in the most frightening theatre of all! So sad such a lonely and unappreciated ending to the most incredible of lives. A true role model for the ages. I am in awe.
Wroger Wroger , maybe, but obviously all the other “women” commenters are. If women want to be appreciated why don’t they try to be people first, and not overnight Hollywood superstars just because they’re women!!!
Jack she chose not to have a family and so there were no children or grandchildren to gather around her and care for her as she got older. Also she lived long enough for many of her peers to have passed away. Sadly by the time she got old there probably were very few who had ever heard of her. She is an awesomely inspiring lady.
I honestly can’t fathom a reason why television and cinema choose to produce the drivel they do when the best material around can be taken from history.
I'm glad they don't mess with it too often to be honest. Raydunakin is right in that movies are rarely historically accurate (even most documentaries and learning channels now aren't), so 'true stories' churned out by Hollywood would result in so much misinformation amongst the populous it would result in real history being lost I think.
Wow. Another great history story about a most important person who really did not get enough recognition for everything she has done. What a hero and a role model for all.
Occasionally I ponder the amazing triumphs of human history lost to time; the songs, the stories, the acts of valour & villainy. Thank you, THG, for preserving some portion of humanity’s wondrous moments.
What a remarkable woman ! I had never heard her story before. An inspiration for many young girls today. Thank you History Guy for bringing this to a greater audience. May her story be told & retold.
Having been a modern flight nurse and knowing the dangers we face today in modern air ambulance platforms, I fail to comprehend how some 90 years ago such a courageous and forward thinking women could step into the void. Salutations distinguées Marie Marvingt.
I have never heard about this most amazing woman. You would think feminists the world over would have her as their patron saint, but they have probably never heard of her either. Thanks for this great video!
With all the negativity and fear permeating our media and daily lives, its comforting to have the History Guy to provide a sense of normalcy! Thank you sir!
Thank you so much for teaching us that which should have been taught in schools. This story is both enlightening and inspirational and you present it, as always, with dignity and respect it deserves. If there were more teachers like you the world would be a better place.
you aren't merely a historian, you are a talented story teller. i was stunned when i got to the end. you sir, are gifted. thank you for an excellently delivered lecture.
Thank you History Guy for rescuing this remarkable woman from historic obscurity. She and her many accomplishments deserve to be remembered and I shall never forget her.
I think y'all missed something. She died poor because her entire life was about giving 100% and "leaving nothing on the table." Why would she worry about her burial plot?
That's true you can't take it with you but you can send it ahead in the form of good works. This lady was a person who did the human race proud and I for one salute her.
I think what bothered me was that supposedly at one point they were going to build a museum for all her trophies and stuff, and apparently she lived so long they forgot about that promise and all the mementos just...poofed.
Good lord, what a life and so well lived. Marie Marvingt was far more accomplished than any male athlete of her time. Having learned of her life brings profound sadness and great joy, in that history has forgotten such an incredible human being. Yet now we can celebrate her rich life of adventure!
For the History Guy, the thrill is in finding an interesting but unknown story to tell and then digging up enough info on it to make a video. I understand because I think the same way.
It is entirely beyond me that I’ve never heard of this woman before! It is extraordinary for you to bring her to the light and present her equally extraordinary story. I was born in 1962 so she only died a year after I was born. She was certainly a model for anyone to emulate. That is those that are looking for more than raising a family. Thank you history guy for bringing this storied life to us to observe.
How come did we not study about this person in school. Such a outstanding individual. She got every once out what life had to offer. Great story, need a movie to inspire the young people today.
Discussing the latest History Guy production with my family has become an enjoyable and welcome distraction from the doom and gloom in the current news... Thanks for all you do to lift spirits!
What an amazing story! It just proves that a person can do almost anything that they put your mind to. Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us!
I never heard of Marie Marvingt until now. What a truly remarkable women. Thank you History Guy for showcasing her during National Women's History Month. Because of you Marie Marvingt is being remembered.
Thank you for sharing the remarkable life history of this amazing woman. I wonder how many critically ill or injured patients owe their lives to her devotion to implementation of air rescue services.
What a history on one person's resume; regardless of gender. Thanks for 'remembering' her. Another woman that deserves to be remembered - Nancy Wake - for your consideration. Cheers

I have been watching the history guy for a while now and I gotta say your one one my favorite subs. There is no higher mark of an educator than being able to take the most seemingly mundane things and events and making them interesting and captivating for people to listen and learn. I just want to say thank you for that, and keep up the good work. Im always looking forward to the next video.

We need a movie about this woman's life - shes a badass!

@Jacob Zondag
Marvingt scares Chuck Norris.
@Jacob Zondag Chuck Norris gets up early so not to wake Marvingt so he can make pancakes for her breakfast.
For a person like this to pass away being almost destitute is a true failing of humanity. Glad you chose this woman to be recognized.
