Actually, I think it's been pretty much established that the real Lincoln had a high, nasal voice! I can't imagine him delivering the Gettysburg Address and sounding like Gilbert Gottfried...
i did a lot of googling, lots or research... from what i learned from historians that studied the comments of people living at the time that heard his voice, heard his speeches, he was more of a tenor with a bit of an accent that was a blend of indiana and kentucky. his voice stood out and moved people. lincoln didn't pace around the podium speaking, he stood tall and let his words and conviction do the emoting. it's said that his son, todd, saw raymond massey in a play sometime in the 20s (before massey did his role as lincoln in the film) and said massey sounded like his father. so i'd have to say raymond massey nailed abe lincoln. i was moved by his portrayal. i'm a young women from california and most of my heroes are other women that have accomplished things in life... but abraham lincoln and john f. kennedy are 2 men from history i look up to and admire. lincoln most of all! oh, and nice finger to the snooping nsa at the end of video! what lincoln had to say in that speech is just as relevant today with all the freedoms we take for granted being eroded and trampled upon. really enjoyed your video ;)

Henry Fonda made a pretty darn good Lincoln, but I had never seen this portrayal. I think Young Mr Lincoln, this film and Lincoln would make a good trilogy of films to teach young people about Lincoln through media.

That play ran for about a year and a half (in NY and then Chicago) and was a big success, then followed up by the movie based on the same material. Several fine actors (including Daniel Day Lewis who was also excellent) have played Lincoln over the years, but Massey's interpretation really stands out. I'm tempted to say they don't make films like this any more, and Spielberg's Lincoln was very good also, but Abe Lincoln in Illinois is one of the great films (and doesn't take too many liberties with the history).

Ever notice how similar Bill Nye the science guy and Abe Lincoln look? Both tall and slim with the same faces, mannerisms, preferences, movements. Both share the same ideals, politics, world view. This was a great film. It made me realize that Lincoln was catapulted to the presidency, as a Dark Horse third party candidate, who generally never win. The establishment wanted a fall guy, so they chose a commoner to take the brunt of the anger against emancipation. They showed their contempt by putting his image on a copper penny. But at least a great statue was erected to his memory at the Lincoln Memorial on the Potomac.
