Trentmann’s primary sources are incredible insights into how average Germans thought about world war 2 and the east-west divide of reunified Germany, and he provides an invaluable service of translating contemporary German politics into historical context for an English-speaking audience. It’s still obvious, though, he’s only scratching the surface of these findings!
