The “hard time killin’ floor” eventually finds us all… Skip James hits deep, across time and space. Remains relevant today, yesterday , tomorrow & to end of time!
anyone else get like a funny feeling when you watch something like this? its weird, like a time machine, almost that real, you are seeing a time so different from the one we are living in as to almost be another planer, just amazing
Yeah. But you also get the feeling that you could stay on in this time for the rest of your life too. I do at least. Not a romantic wishful thinking, but more like a melancholy nostalgia for something that I never was a part of
The Guy was Genious,i cant understand why his music wasnt a success when he played in his early days 1931 and then he got discovered again in 1960. people were deaf or what? he's playing is so unique.. if i can time travell i wanna c this dude play
+Mindfear2006 Skip James had some songs that could make people want to get up and dance, but look at Skip here. There's no cross talk from the other musicians (unlike during other performances). Nobody's moving around or clowning. He's got their full attention and to enjoy his music it needs more attention to hear the nuance and his genius. I think about some footage of Booker 'Bukka' White from this same night. He could start a party all by himself. Within a couple of verses he had people up and dancing. He invited the banter with Howlin Wolf and the other musicians. I'd never try to pick one style over another in this case, but I think Skip was probably 20 or 30 years ahead of his time. If a 28 year old Skip James had walked into a Greenwich Village folk club in 1960 he would have been an international sensation.
+Odin029 hey do you know any musicians who play the guitar like he did? cos i cant find any who come close. It's a shame there's not much music from him.I WISH he wrote more and not stopped playing.still cant understand he must have known he was good and differnt. well i prefer this its has more heart and soul, you feel it when you listen to his music its pure.^pity he didnt the credit and honour he should of had
Some of his songs were covered by Robert Johnson so obviously he had respect among the blues men, but maybe he was just too far ahead of his time for the wider public, I hear a lot of neo soul and modern jazz in his songs.
A different age, but this guy is mesmerising. His voice comes from a beautiful place, even when the story is sad. I feel privileged to hear him sing, and play.
I love the silent amazement/respect Howlin Wolf and the other bluesmen watching/listening to this performance. I'm making the same silently amazed face too fellas...
Am so curious...like Bob Dylan....he seemed to change his voice from his beginning...wonder if it was because of ...health??? or just decided to be more melodic? Wonder what he would tell us bout this??
all compliments to the cameraman :) and all love to Skip. He inspired also Jack Bruce and Cream. That's how I discovered him. Thanx Cream to bring Skip to my world.
Skip James, my 2nd favorite bluesman next to Robert Johnson! Mountain Jack is my favorite song of his and I would love to find sheet music or a tutorial video on how to play this shining tune!!
I'm not sure but I think this is when they gathered up all the old blues men for the Newport jazz festival if it is then Skip James had throat cancer at the time and still put out that voice
+David Rogers Definitely Wolf in the white shirt, and I believe that is the back of Bukka White's head preventing you from seeing Wolf's face. I think it is Son House at the very end, but can't be sure of that.
Yes I have the video. Devil Got My Woman: Blues at Newport 1966. Howlin' Wolf, Reverend Pearly Brown, Bukka White, Son House were all present. It's Son House rubbing his hands and clapping at the end of the song. (The video is cut short so the clapping is not presented)

He often doesn't sing the last word of a verse. I guess he figures since you know what it is, he doesn't have to sing it. It's not just this song, either. He does the same thing on Crow Jane. I don't know of anyone else who does that.
he was trying to film Wolf on the other side. rude and incompetent wasting so much film on more famous person instead of subject; greasy paparazzi move
There was more than one camera recording this, and there are other versions of this video that do a better job of cutting between the cameras at the right time
Brilliant playing and such a good voice. Blues at its very best. Thank you Skip for leaving us this memorable video.
Thought he was having trouble at first. Nope. He got into the rhythm and carried me away. I cherish this man.
This is the most pure and raw form of music that exists
I love it

Oh my god, that is one incredible video! How privileged we are to be able to see this.

Mindfear2006 depends on your view of credit because he was cherished by blues men
Some of his songs were covered by Robert Johnson so obviously he had respect among the blues men, but maybe he was just too far ahead of his time for the wider public, I hear a lot of neo soul and modern jazz in his songs.

Watch that "picking" hand, truly unsung delta blues father, he gave us this and probably died unnoticed, alone and broke. Thank you sir, gods peace
thanks UA-cam for sharing Skip James, pure soul, pure talent.

this is one of the most fascinating blues video there is.
The greatest of alltime
I love hearing skip’s voice, if I tried to sing like him I’d sound ridiculous. Lol
🤣i just turn him up higher when i sing
Am so curious...like Bob Dylan....he seemed to change his voice from his beginning...wonder if it was because of ...health??? or just decided to be more melodic?
Wonder what he would tell us bout this??
@@annonymost9318 some say it was Dylans motorcycle accident, but none of it ever was really confirmed.
Music from from the soul.😢
the human soul expressed purely
all compliments to the cameraman :)
and all love to Skip. He inspired also Jack Bruce and Cream. That's how I discovered him. Thanx Cream to bring Skip to my world.
lucky you!
Certainly inspired the voice of Al Wilson of Canned Heat.
Oh man thank you youtube. How did i not know this guy?
So great to see so much Love in the room.
Happy Birthday Skip 🖤🥃
We are so lucky this footage exists! Surely the purist expression of American music!
Skip James is an angel
thank you so muich for sharing. this is incredible!!!!
Skip James, my 2nd favorite bluesman next to Robert Johnson! Mountain Jack is my favorite song of his and I would love to find sheet music or a tutorial video on how to play this shining tune!!

This is an amazing performance !!!
I'm not sure but I think this is when they gathered up all the old blues men for the Newport jazz festival if it is then Skip James had throat cancer at the time and still put out that voice
Warms the soul

Great! very very Good. True Blues
The embodiment of the Bentonia School of blues
skip and howlin wolf in the same room, god damn
a century of black music
And Son House and Bukka White!
M Jn. Hurt
They sometimes were, they never liked each other.
Howlin' Wolf in the white shirt?
+David Rogers Yes, It might be Howlin' Wolf...
+Stefano Di Leonardo Yeah.. Must be the same day as the 'Devil Got My Woman' video was made.
+David Rogers Definitely Wolf in the white shirt, and I believe that is the back of Bukka White's head preventing you from seeing Wolf's face. I think it is Son House at the very end, but can't be sure of that.

perfect
Amazing
Deep as it gets.
It's physically impossible to be more blues than Skip
'Mountain Jack' - Listen to Elvis sing 'If You're looking For Trouble' from the movie 'King Creole'.
Art!
I idolized him
Just awesome is all
Good video. Thanks for posting this.
Ain't nothing like benatonia blues
time out of mind
Howlin Wolf is so tuned in,... intense.
The water heater in the back looks to code. Right on
😁
I see Howlin' Wolf and Son House. Anyone recognize the other folks in the room?
Was that Sonny Boy Williamson behind Skip around the 3:30 mark?
Very good
prety good music
Crow jane 🎉
What does he say at 2:08 ?
"She led me out in the cold, with my folded arms"
SKIPJAMESVEVO this song is called "Worried Blues" (or "Skip's Worried Blues") not Mountain Jack
here's my 2016 version, with all due respect to the almighty Nehemiah: ua-cam.com/video/u29HvPbIVYE/v-deo.html
The man the camera zooms at 3:15 could that be Robert Petway ?? blues researchers ???
harpman1876 its not sleepy john
You're right. Sure looks like him, though.
Mississippi John Hurt perhaps and the others could be Bukka White , Son House and Howling Wolf .
You can hear Lightnin in here

Why is Sonny boy Williamson hiding and I wonder if the guy who filmed this know how much of a blues ledgend Skip James is?
Where was this recorded?
Newport Folk Festival, July 1966, by that great archivist of the blues, Alan Lomax, who recreated a Mississippi juke joint in Rhode Island
In what year this video was recorded?
suka games
I believe it's 1966.

Did the Blues arise from the pain of Slavery?
I jus' don know what it
that camera man loved that dude's back...
he was trying to film Wolf on the other side. rude and incompetent wasting so much film on more famous person instead of subject; greasy paparazzi move
It's the back of Bukka White.

The 11 people who disliked this video are idiots. This is golden.

Blah blah
Heavily influenced by Robert Johnson.
Vice versa actually.
