    It's "not his repertoire" but goddamn, we would all kill to have someone this good sing this these days

    I don't even know why I expected less, but this is absolutely phenomenal. Even more ease than Melchior with the most difficult phrases of the aria and seemingly endless power.

    Oh, well ... they won't be able to criticize Del Monaco for being just a loud voice. This is truly wonderful. What a magnificent singer.
    Old School Singers, Thank you !

      …indeed those calling him just „ a loud singer“ lack knowledge and mostly the ability to judge human voices technically. A big voice, and MDM really had, remains big over the entire dynamic range, from pp to ff. MDM had it all! RDS

      @@amantedellopera1681 I agree he sounds great here but will bet my house this recording was made in the 1950s.

      @@rdargenio One way to know that this was recorded post-retirement, is to read his biographies, and to listen to interviews from his retirement (post accident years). Wagner's operas were not part of Del Monaco's repertoire. He was not known as this type of tenor. He played this recording for interviewers, in the final years of life, and explained that he had sung this sort of for his own enjoyment, and also just to show that he could master the Wagnerian style.
      To be fair to others, known for performances of Wagner's work, Del Monaco recorded just this song, and never performed it live, in with all of the other requirements for this heavy duty, industrial sized opera.

    • @ceceliaclarke264
      @ceceliaclarke264 2 роки тому +1

      @@rdargenio Respectfully, this is not from the 1950s. He never performed this live, as a full opera. In my opinion, he sounds wonderful and amazing, but I happen to know from reading his biographies and listening to interviews, that he made this recording for his own enjoyment (not as a paid performance) in a studio, late in his life.

    Wow! A real Heldentenor in this music. And his German is better than Domingo - he gets the closed ‘e’ sound right. Bright, ringing, free tone. And today we have Kaufmann ‘ingolata’ and Vogt ‘senza voce’. I wish he had gone to Bayreuth. It’s clear from this recording that he was willing to chasten the ‘slancio’ of his Italian style - perhaps he felt uncomfortable by this point with having to sing such a long opera in a language and manner not his own. But I found the singing here quite brilliant.

    Non so se questo mio commento solleverà polemiche, secondo me Del Monaco sarebbe stato uno dei più grandi Lohengrin,rimasi impressionato dalla sua prima registrazione se non vado errato su Voce del Padrone, in italiano, con un centro così ricco e bronzeo e con quella dizione (non c era bisogno di libretti) avrei voluto sentirlo in altri ruoli wagneriani, resta comunque uno dei più grandi.

      Beh, il suo tedesco lascia un pochino a desiderare, e l'interpretazione e pure un pochino patetica, condita un pochino col verismo, ma concordo con Lei. Sì, Del Monaco ebbe la stoffa del Heldentenor, e in questa occasione l'aveva egregiamente dimostrata. Per giunta, fu capace di aggiungere un raro piano. Non fu Lauritz. Ma fu Del Monaco, un idolo, anche come Lohengrin,

    Some strained passages, less than perfect German and I doubt that he really has worked on the interpretation. Nevertheless this is quite good and the voice itself is of course glorious. Much preferable to everyone singing the role today (and many of the "great" in the past).

    Die Stimme ist gut, es klingt aber nicht überzeugend. Man kann Wagner nicht wie belcanto singen!

    • @derphysiker1774
      @derphysiker1774 3 роки тому +1

      Ganz meine Meinung! Es war das Problem von Mario del Monaco, dass seine Stimme nicht wirklich wandlungsfähig war und sich nicht den Eigenheiten von einem Wagner anpassen konnte. Er hat eigentlich alles immer gleich gesungen.

    • @Inoslav
      @Inoslav 2 роки тому +2

      Das war kein belcanto, bitte! Italienisch, ja, möglich, aber nicht belcanto.

    • @diguan3446
      @diguan3446 2 роки тому +4

      Wagner hat selber gesagt, dass man zuerst Bel canto Still beherrschen muss, bevor man meine Musik zu singen. Und man muss viele Sache von Bel canto nehmen fuer meine Musik. Wagner schreibt auch ganz viele Bel canto Sachen.
      Del Monaco war auch kein Bel canto Saenger, sondern Verismo! Das hat mit Bel canto auch nix zu tun.
      Bel canto ist nur Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, und fruehen Verdi, ab Simon Beccanegra ist die Musik von Verdi auch kein Bel canto mehr.

    • @maxmustermann7903
      @maxmustermann7903 Рік тому +2

      Nach meiner Meinung singt er den Lohengrin eher wie einen Chenier. Also kein Belcanto. Nichtsdestotrotz orientiert er sich an einer klanglichen Linie, falls Sie dies mit "Belcanto" meinen. Dies ist aber in den alten und sogenannten "großen" Aufnahmen bei allen Wagnersängern so. London, Nilsson, Völker, Lorenz, Mödl usw. Was ein Sänger mit "italienischer Art" zu singen bei Wagner zu leisten imstande ist, hat nach meiner Meinung Jisef Metternich als Telramund gezeigt.
      Bzgl. der Interpretation stimme ich Ihnen vollumfänglich zu. MDM versteht eindeutig nicht, was er singt und ist nur auf einen möglichst eindrucksvollen Klang seiner Stimme bedacht.

    • @falkfink
      @falkfink Рік тому +2

      Ich finde es eigentlich umso besser so. Grade die gralserzählung hat gesungen viel mehr Wirkung als gebrüllt. Bei einer Siegfried Schmiedszene wäre es was anderes, aber ich finde den sehr ausgesungenen Ansatz hier ideal.

      Very ignorant comment,try reading others posts here,you find many agreeing with you.For an Italian singing a guttural language is very difficult,he does a fine job and was the greatest dramatic tenor ever,regardless of what you think.
