The pilot of the Skycrane, Rip Green, just passed away this past March. He was one of my dearest friends for many years, and had a ton of great stories about this particular adventure. Time sure does fly. 40 year ago. Wow.
My dad was one of the guys on the crew that was at the top of the tower when the arial was being brought in by the helicopter. He was one of the steel workers that bolted the arial on the tower. I was just 3 at the time but I remember his old newspaper clipping with him and a few others waving from the top of the tower. There was a picture taken from a helicopter. Wish that I could find a copy of that clipping again. He passed away in 1993. RIP Dad.
My dad took me to work that day, let me skip school, to come and see this. Before they renovated the tower, there was a big display about one of the ironworkers who was a bit of a nutbar, he parachuted off the middle of the tower on his last day of work. It was sort of an urband legend, but the display in the tower actually had pics of it. Thanks for the video.
Fastastic video. The copter pilot and rigging personnel had guts to suspend from so high to build that tower. I have a video here from July 1974 of CN building the concrete triangled base. Thanks for sharing!
Well, apparently after the top piece of the antenna was bolted on, the riggers took a piss off the top of the tower to celebrate (as was/is customary). So, if you felt it raining, now you know why!
Does anyone remember a local Toronto newspaper running a competition whereby the winner was taken to the very tip of the tower? Appareently, its about 6 feet wide up there and the lady winner was so terrified, she froze solid and wouldn't come down!!!! Anyone know where I can find that article? I've been looking for years.
Danielle Simms and Morwyn Mullins, could you write back to me as your UA-cam messaging is turned off. I'd like to follow up to your comments posted on this page.
If you'd like to learn of a subset of the people who designed and built the tower, and more visuals of its construction, then please take an hour and visit my CN Tower Historical Project at www.pastandfuturehistory.com. I would also love to get further contributions from those who post 1975-era comments about their parents/friends working on the tower.

Awesome 👌
Sorry your dad passed away, all of those men have my respect for their work and risking their lives working on the tower back in the 70s

Just amazing and love watching the old footage of tower building built, amazing accomplishment for the 1970's, 46 years and going strong
Super 8mm colour footage.
@thepigeonsmustdie this footage was taken from the 1960's to 1970's
How come all the cars in the video are old cars?
